July 2000

July 2000

July saw MANY changes, both on TRL and on this site. :) By the end of the month, Carson was insisting about a “change in direction” for the show, because lots of rock videos made it. What June was for Papa Roach, July was for P.O.D. Other than the rock, Hanson stayed in the top two all the time because of the power of the online campaigns.

The most “disturbing” part of July was the absolute ineptness of TRL’s “counter guy.” The guy who makes sure a video retires after 65 days basically failed. Both "The Real Slim Shady" and "Oops! I Did It Again" were retired late. The TRL Travesties went up significantly in number.

They stayed in New York for the majority of the time, so we weren’t subjected to the crappiness that is MTV’s SoCal Summer. Anyway, enjoy the month.

10 "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child
After hearing this song on the radio nonstop for the past 2 months, it IS sorta nice to have a visual for it.
09 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Note spot on the "ideal" countdown.
08 "Back Here" by BBMak
They may play their own instruments and write their own songs… but that shouldn’t excuse them from having a terrible song.
07 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
“But wait a minute? Isn’t this…” “Yeah, yes it is...” I got you a black rock.
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Album sales went up majorly last week... Carson's all proud of the influence his show has (*cough*arrogant*cough*)
05 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
There was an animal protection agency on hand so that they didn't harm the bugs. (yeah... the BUGS)
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Went back into the studio this month... FINALLY... could we please get a new album?
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
At least they didn’t do one of those “pretty videos” like “normal groups” like them do...
01 "If Only" by Hanson
My conclusion: Hanson online fans are CRAZY devoted. These "Project TRL" sites and fan clubs pull all strings to get this video #1.
Notes:
- The opening: Carson "Will a new month bring new hope to videos to get to #1?" ahahahaha! riiiiight
- Close calls: "I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera and "Californication" by Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Sorry for the lack of updates. I know, it's bad... I have excuses but I doubt you wanna hear them... If I knew that people were really interested in this site, I'd most likely be way more motivated
- Updated TRL News about the Inside TRL homevideo
- Submit your Ideal Countdown for last Friday... please

Tuesday 7.4.2000 Independence Day!
10 "Back Here" by BBMak
"That's a good little pop song... not much to it... but good." - Carson
09 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
08 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Carson apparently thinks this is the "quintessential" 4th of July video... riiight. When I think Independence Day, I think Kid Rock too.
07 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
"You know, I don't really like Kid Rock, but I think he puts on an awesome show." He DOES put on a good show, but then he comes out with that crap song above.
06 "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
"Britney's HOT... I just realized" - Carson
05 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
04 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
03 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Their own line of lip balm?!? That's almost as bad as Britney bubblegum. And it tops the Backstreet candles.
02 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Their first "official" book comes out tomorrow... I NEVER thought I'd say this, but I am looking forward to buying it.
01 "If Only" by Hanson
Have we seen Taylor's smirk? The whole "you and me and us and I" ...
Major hotness... only here

Notes:
- Close calls: "Jumpin' Jumpin'" by Destiny's Child and "Mope" by Bloodhound Gang

I think he's dissing himself here—he looks into the camera and it breaks
07 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
06 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
Tragedy at the Summer Sanatorium tour: Man fell from the 5th deck to his death
05 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
04 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Highest showing yet; Carson was “curious” (hehe), it's "unbelievable"

First video ever to receive an in-studio standing ovation (according to Carson)
02 "If Only" by Hanson
Taylor looks all confused... poor guy
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync

03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
At the beginning of the whole too-fast-to-see-anything-at-all part, Howie and Nick are laughing and it’s cute.
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Joey fell rappelling... it’s cool that they left that scene in.
01 "If Only" by Hanson
Okay, this song is getting to me. I really like it. That’s me being brutally honest. Scary.

01 "If Only" by Hanson

- Ozzfest All Access concert contest
- All Access Week from New York starting Monday!
- Missed the first part of today. Got back in time to watch the last hour of the show... aaah!
- Back from vacation! San Francisco was AWESOME, however I don’t think I agree totally with the temperature difference between here and there. (um... I went from 110 degrees to 60 PLUS wind... not good for the sunny Arizona girl) Also, driving downtown is not something I recommend if you plan on living a long, healthy life. I’m what you could call an “aggressive” driver, and I was still scared.

Monday 7.17.2000
10 “It Doesn’t Matter” by Wyclef f/The Rock
09 “Back Here” by BBMak
“We were having coffee at a flat and we were just messing around with chords and all that. We wrote the whole song in about 45 minutes.” Yeah, you can tell.
08 “Somebody Someone” by Korn
07 “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem
“Eminem is punk rock!” – Coby Dick [hmmm... he does sound like Blink-182 and FenixTX and mxpx... right]

Next video to be even more emotional
05 “Lucky” by Britney Spears
“No dancing, and I lot more sort of acting skills here.” – Carson
04 “Rock the Party” by P.O.D.
Interesting.
03 “The One” by Backstreet Boys
They never fail to look really hot in those opening blue vest outfit Star Wars things. I swear. Every picture I’ve seen of them in those has been... really nice.
02 “If Only” by Hanson
An actual request: “...‘cause if only they were our age, we’d make their dreams come true!” (hehe)
01 “It's Gonna Be Me” by 'N Sync
There’s some good dancing in this video. It’s majorly entertaining. [Notice how I'm being good and not even commenting on those girls who won the tickets?]
Notes:
- All Access Week starts! TRL back in NYC. Today is ‘N Sync day.

- P.O.D. debuts
- NEW! Some site viewers and I have decided that Britney Spears’ retirement was a mistake. A travesty, more like it. Check it out—written by TC.
- June 2000 archived officially. However, somehow some of my commentary got lost due to Angelfire and its crappiness when half of this results page got deleted (from June 13 or so to June 22).

Tuesday 7.18.2000
10 “Somebody Someone” by Korn
Lowest ever. I’m liking all these changes in the countdown. Makes it so much more interesting.
09 “It Doesn’t Matter” by Wyclef f/The Rock
Okay... we got this song, “Doesn’t Really Matter” by Janet, AND “No Matter What They Say” by Lil’ Kim ALL recently. It’s a trend.
08 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
07 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
06 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
I think that this is one of the songs that, when it comes on the radio, I change the station.
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
Carson again goes off on how hot Britney is getting. “It’s ridiculous”
04 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
This song is so good—turned up REALLY loud.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
01 "If Only" by Hanson
The girl in the video that Taylor looks at before that cute smile of his looks like that girl Anne from The Patriot. (good movie)

- TRL Premiere Busta Rhymes video: “Fire”
- Carson was on Regis and Kathy Lee this morning. Let me tell you two things: first, I DON’T watch talk shows. Second, I don’t wake up that early after only 5 hours of sleep. However it was worth it because he was funny. He did well. Kathy Lee asked him about the black nail polish and he didn’t really answer. She didn’t understand—funny stuff.

Wednesday 7.19.2000
10 “American Bad Ass” by Kid Rock
“It’s sorta like a-day-in-the-life of Kid Rock” – Carson
09 “Somebody Someone” by Korn
Okay, this song is growing on me, although it’s not really that distinctive. But the video... how in the world do the bugs relate to the song?
08 “I Think I'm In Love With You” by Jessica Simpson
Lyric of the day: “You were hanging with your crew, I was with mine too” umm... your crew?
07 “Rock the Party” by P.O.D.
06 “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem
05 “Last Resort” by Papa Roach
Request of the day: “I requested... ‘cause they send a good message and have a lot of positive energy” ... what?
04 “Lucky” by Britney Spears
I like this song, but the beat in the background sounds SO familiar. Ever since I first heard it. Is she sampling?
03 “The One” by Backstreet Boys
Apparently one of the only groups NOT on tour this summer.
02 “It's Gonna Be Me” by 'N Sync
Called Maria, big ‘N Sync fan. Agreeing with her, he said, “Justin is the face of the new millennium.” Carson about broke down in laughter after he said that. I’m laughing just thinking about it.
01 “If Only” by Hanson
Isaac’s nickname is Chewbacca...

07 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
Numbers 5 through 8 are rock/alternative/rap. (See #2)
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
“On stage” with them. It seems that they always wear black.
05 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
Okay, made premature judgment on this one. I DON’T change the station when this song comes on. It’s energetic and good. More on why the video is cool tomorrow.
04 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
“Nice work there, Britney.” – Carson
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
When I first heard this song, my first thought was... OLYMPICS.
02 "If Only" by Hanson
Numbers 1 through 4 are pop. (See #7)

- Chris Connelly on stage with Papa Roach
- ‘N Sync ticket giveaway
- Up In Smoke All Access contest update

Friday 7.21.2000
10 “Back Here” by BBMak
This song really disgusts me. All three of them like this girl right? And so they play in the middle of some busy place and get her picture. Her picture. What does that accomplish?
09 “American Bad Ass” by Kid Rock
Please enlighten me. Why are people voting for this song. Please. Why.
08 “Somebody Someone” by Korn
Here’s Korn to “cheer you up” – Carson
07 “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem
Request of the day: “‘cause it’s a great song and we think he’s pretty fly for a white guy!”
06 “Last Resort” by Papa Roach
Rumored to be touring with Limp Bizkit and Eminem this fall
05 “Rock the Party” by P.O.D.
This video is cool. Going around in the van, picking up people, and performing. It’s definitely entertaining.
04 “Lucky” by Britney Spears
Lucky’s all upset that she doesn’t have anybody, but then she’s such a bitch. That’ll reel them in.
03 “The One” by Backstreet Boys
Favorite part: abandoning most instruments and singing the chorus a little differently
02 “It's Gonna Be Me” by 'N Sync
“The most fun I had at a concert was probably in New Orleans. We had about 200 of our friends come. The whole front row was trying to make us laugh and they succeeded.” –Lance

- Jessica Simpson visits
- ‘N Sync ticket giveaway again

Monday 7.24.2000
10 “Country Grammar” by Nelly
Oh god please tell me this is a fluke. I hear it on the radio ALL the time, and it’s not the greatest experience.
09 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
08 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Um, today was announced as his 61st day. Carson kept saying that “if the math works out,” he should be retired on Friday. Yeah, funny thing is that it DOESN’T work out. His 61st day was Friday. SHOULD be retired on Thursday. I’m sick of TRL’s problems.
07 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Request of the day: “‘cause TRL was my last resort to see this video!”
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
“Lucky’s” phone call and her annoyed “NO” into the phone are hilarious. She does that whole thing well.
04 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
To visit tomorrow.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Rest safe, the dogs have been returned. If whoever took them was a fan, they have SERIOUS problems. That’s just not how sanity works.
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
One of the worst shots of this video has got to be the slow-motion dancing (and their mouths are going regular speed). When they jump up and pull their legs together. It’s only a second, but it’s horrible.
01 "If Only" by Hanson
“They got hot chicks and stuff in their videos... it’s not like roller skating anymore.” – Carson (hehe)
Notes:
- Close calls: “Jumpin' Jumpin'” by Destiny's Child and "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock

- Home video address: P.O. Box 2001 NY, NY 10108
- Site stuff: I got some submissions for last Friday and the IDEAL COUNTDOWN. You people must’ve forgotten about that. AND, I made my own “Wishful Thinking” Countdown, even though it was extremely hard.

Tuesday 7.25.2000
10 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Did you know that this was on VH1’s countdown? I was SURPRISED
09 "Back Here" by BBMak
Ste: favorite actor is Will Smith, once set his dog’s tail on fire, and they’re letting their fans pick the next single (hmmm, does that sound familiar?)
08 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
Got only one nomination this year.
07 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Co-leads the VMA nominations with 6. Along with ‘N Sync.
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Nominated for best new artist in a video.
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
What in the world is Lucky wearing? All I know is that it apparently doubles as pajamas.
04 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
They’re all about positive music and vibes. That was a good interview.
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
Holy Sh*t they got SHAFTED for the VMAs. I mean, they haven’t been the biggest past four months, but REALLY. Not even Viewer’s Choice. For “Larger Than Life” or anything. Here’s me swearing like a sailor over this one.
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
FOUR shows in New York. Holy... FOUR. I bet some ‘N Sync fanatics are going to all of them.
01 "If Only" by Hanson
I no longer can find anything to say about this video. Nothing comes to me. The inspiration’s not there or something.
Notes:
- Close calls: “It Doesn’t Matter” by Wyclef f/The Rock and “Change” by the Deftones
- Shawn and Marlon Wayans visit—they’re hosting the 2000 VMAs
- John Norris and ‘N Sync with VMA announcements (they’re REALLY starting promotion early, aren’t they? The commercials better be good for this thing if I’m gonna have to see them for the next month and a half.)
- P.O.D. visits

Wednesday 7.26.2000
10 “Country Grammar” by Nelly
“I’m not sure I understand fully what’s going on in that video, but I like it.” – Carson

08 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
His new video is supposed to premiere on Monday.
07 “Stellar” by Incubus
Whoa... they get a mention yesterday from P.O.D. and all of the sudden they debut? That band’s got some major pull.
06 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
Coby Dick considers the novel On the Road his favorite book.
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
“Notice how Britney and Lucky are never in the same room at the same time?” – Carson. Um, but they are.
04 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
I got an email telling me to look for the phone conversation before this video was played ‘cause it was so funny... but I don’t really know what to say about it now. Carson cracks me up.
03 "If Only" by Hanson
Carson: “Hanson has dropped all the way to #3.” Caller: “Oh, good.”
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
Justin: “We didn’t think that by this time this year, we’d get tickets to sit down at the VMAs.” Yeah, we all had those dreams. (I’m totally kidding here people, don’t send me hatemail!)
01 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
Carson likes this. “What’s happening here?!” was my favorite quote of his.
Notes:
- Close calls: "Back Here" by BBMak and "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
- Stellar phones
- News from John Norris includes an impending decision about Napster. Don’t take my Napster away.
- Wuv and Sonny from P.O.D. phones. He mentioned the Deftones. I wonder if they’ll be on the countdown tomorrow.
- Everybody keeps mentioning a “turn” in music today. Like it happened overnight or something. I don’t know about this. P.O.D. is number one, but this is TRL and they visited yesterday. Pop videos still make up the rest of the top 5 and they’ve been there for a while.
- THREE new Wishful Thinking countdowns today. Well, one of them is more commentary, but go check it out anyway.

Thursday 7.27.2000
10 “Country Grammar” by Nelly
09 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
08 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Should be gone today. Somebody at TRL must be like, “Hmmm... I think Sarah’s website needs more travesties. Let’s play videos for longer than they should be. We’ll do her a favor.”
07 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
06 “Stellar” by Incubus
05 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
That whole scene with the 3 Britneys is COOL. But it’s ruined by that reaching through the flowers thing.
04 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
“P.O.D. just talks about what’s real to us. We’d be selfish if we didn’t share it.”
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
02 "If Only" by Hanson
01 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
The whole whistling from the Barbies, and then their enthusiastic nodding is just too much.
Notes:
- Close calls: “Change” by the Deftones and "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
- 98 Degrees visits
- TRL Premiere 98 Degrees video: “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)”
- GOT ANY QUESTIONS? I'm making a FAQ section, so ask me anything! About TRL or anything! I'll answer!
- Go read this article. It’s not about TRL, but it mentions it in a way that ... pisses me off. Thanks to Saran for telling me about it.

Friday 7.28.2000
10 "Back Here" by BBMak
If I hear about BBMak and the way they play their own instruments ONE more time... I'm gonna scream. At least HALF of the artists on the countdown do the same.
09 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
Highlights of a retiring video: “Nothing you IDIOTS, Dr. Dre’s dead!” when “Britney” is scared of Eminem after he turns on her (that’s HILARIOUS), the ‘N Sync/BSB impersonators
08 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
07 "Somebody Someone" by Korn
06 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
She’s got this huge mirror in front of her, and she still picks up that little thing to stare at herself.
05 “Stellar” by Incubus
04 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D.
“It means a lot to us that this is something you guys are stoked about.” – Carson **cough**he’swaytooproud**cough**
03 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
What I wrote in my review of Millennium: Rating (out of 10): 9.1 “I know that this song is nonstop corny, but I can’t stop loving it. My favorite part is near the end, when they abandon all instruments and sing the chorus a little differently. That’s some great stuff right there.”
02 "It's Gonna Be Me" by 'N Sync
I think it’s interesting how Joey knocks down the dominoes that spell out their name. What’s that supposed to symbolize? Or maybe it’s too much to assume that there’s symbolism in pop videos such as this...
01 "If Only" by Hanson
Notes:
- Shout Out Friday
- Close calls: “Country Grammar” by Nelly and “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)” by 98 Degrees
- Eminem’s video retired (66th day) – Should be up in Travesties soon.
- Injunction against Napster stayed. That’s some good news.
- It’s Ideal Countdown day again. (You know... every Friday) Rearrange today’s countdown and send it to me!

10 “Country Grammar” by Nelly
From James: First of all, the chorus sounds like a little kids song. Second, he just walks about in those gray pants while about a thousand scantly dressed woman and buff men are rolling around on old cars. That annoys me. Oh, and same with the scene where he is dancing with all the hubcaps in the background. Please.
09 “Somebody Someone” by Korn
Tour features the Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival
08 “Change (In the House of Flies)” by the Deftones
Leave it to TRL to get the biggest teenybopper ever to answer a question about this video. Snippets of the conversation I was laughing my ass off at: Girl: “It’s like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire but like who wants to talk to Carson.” [lots and lots of screaming, etc.] Carson: “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Girl: “I’m having a heart attack over here.” Carson: “I’m waiting for the ‘and that one time at band camp’ line. I’m waiting for it. Any second.”
07 “Last Resort” by Papa Roach
“People connect with the energy behind it and really feel it”
06 “Stellar” by Incubus
I realize I have yet to make a comment on this video. But I just don’t know. I really like the song, although by the end I’m ready for it to be over, but my verdict on the video is still up in the air.
05 “Lucky” by Britney Spears
The music behind the “ay-ay-ay-ay-oh” part, before the academy awards thing sounds EXACTLY like “Oops! I Did It Again”
04 “Rock the Party” by P.O.D.
03 “The One” by Backstreet Boys
WHAT THE HELL. Granted, this is one video I won’t mind seeing another day... but REALLY what is going on. This, today, is Backstreet’s 61st day. But it wasn’t announced.
02 “It's Gonna Be Me” by 'N Sync
Starring in an upcoming Imax film. God forbid you turn on the TV and they're not on... now they gotta go after the movies too.
01 “If Only” by Hanson
Notes:
- Close calls: “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)” by 98 Degrees and “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi
- “HALF the videos are straight-up rock videos.” – Carson (FIVE rock, FOUR pop, ONE rap)
- The Deftones debut
- John Norris live from the Republican National Convention and the protests outside
- World premiere Eminem video: “The Way I Am”
- NEW: TRL FAQ!, Ideal Countdowns, the Eminem travesty is posted... and there’s more but I don’t feel like writing it out... look at the frame for anything with a + beside it. And go to the messageboard!
