LADY JAGS SEEDED THIRD IN TEAM REGIONALS!
Cynthia and Sadiya receive #4 seed in individuals
(4/17) The Lady Jaguar varsity lineup travels to second-seeded Sabino on Monday to determine who will represent the Kino Conference at the 4A state team championships, held next week in Glendale. Match time is set for 1pm. A Jaguar victory will lead to a Tuesday face-off against the winner of the Nogales-Flowing Wells match to determine the conference champion.
Kino coaches named the Jaguar doubles team of Cynthia Ramirez and Sadiya Buta the number 4 seed in the 4A individual regional championships, which take place at the Tucson Racquet Club on Thursday and Friday, April 23rd and 24th. Also competing will be the tandem of Julie Bermudez and Karina Munguia, and singles players Carla Rodriguez and Kyla Kemp. Matches begin at 11am. Good luck, Ladies!

Like our earlier match with the Cougars, this one came down to the wire, and was won in the final match of the day, as our #1 doubles team of Stephanie Celaya-Serventi and Carla Rodriguez rallied from a 4-0 deficit to come back and win. Sophomore Cynthia Rodriguez and freshman Sadiya Buta continue to be the surprise mainstays of the team, winning their singles and doubles matches as they have done most of the season.
Our wonderful seniors: Jennifer, Esmeralda, Carla, Stephanie, Julie, Karina and Vielka...
...are saluted by their appreciative teammates.
In addition to being our final regular-season match of the day, today was Senior Appreciation Day, and the seniors were presented with flowers, candy and silly hats. After the match was over, the Lady Jags celebrated on the courts with subs, eegee’s, cookies, and cake and participated in a glorious water fight. Now the waiting begins – to see if this rapidly-improving team will be invited to compete in the state team tournament. Cross your fingers, Ladies!

Ouch! This was one we needed to win to qualify for the state team tournament, but the top of the order simply didn’t play well in singles or doubles. Now we have our work cut out for us in our final two matches – either we play much better than today, or we’re at the mercy of the power rankings. However, congratulations to Julie, who came back from a serious ankle sprain suffered last week to earn a tremendous come-from-behind victory at #4 singles. Let’s hope her determination is contagious!

Junior/Li’l Jags crush Caballeros, 8-1
The Junior and Li’l Jags have never looked so dominant. Today, they swept through the singles in record time, and except for a hiccup by Vania “I used to be Sexy” Meraz and Rosa Ayon in doubles, they swept through the opposition. I was especially pleased to see excellent doubles play from our Baby Jags today, too!

A tough match against the #3 team in the state, and the girls simply weren’t up to it. Going into this match, the Dorados were ranked #4 in the state and we were #5. The girls played hard, but were unable to win the big points. This was especially true of Cynthia and Sadiya’s singles and doubles matches, and Kyla also had a number of opportunities. Had they pulled out wins, the score would have reflected the rankings. However, this was a good warmup against a very strong team for our critical Sabino match. The Sabercats are ranked #3, so the Lady Jags will need to step up their intensity.

Today, the girls returned to form, looking like the team that beat Sahuaro and Flowing Wells! Once again, the bottom of the order led the way. I’m proud of all the girls, but especially proud of senior Karina Munguia, who was called on to fill in at #4 for Julie Bermudez, who injured her ankle just before match time. Karina overcame a slow start to fight back for the singles win and then teamed with Kyla Kemp for an impressive victory at #2 doubles. Bob and Carla found their rhythm at #1 doubles, scoring an entertaining revenge win, and Cynthia and Sadiya continued their unbeaten streak at #3.

Junior Jags whip Warriors, 3-0!
Pueblo only brought three JV players, but they fought hard and gave our girls a real challenge. Gaby Serrano won a see-saw battle at #1, while Vania “Will somebody please say I’m Sexy?” Meraz had it easier at #2. The girls then teamed up for an impressive doubles win.

Frustrating is the only word to describe today’s match. Several girls let their emotions get to them and lost because they let Sunnyside’s fabled lack of pace get to them. The Blue Devil players stuck to their game plan and it worked to perfection. Let’s hope the Lady Jaguars learn from the experience. However, there were some bright moments as freshman Sadiya Buta won her sixth consecutive varsity match, and teamed with junior Cynthia Ramirez to continue undefeated in doubles.

This was a match that easily could have gone either way, but the Lady Jags showed fierce determination and prevailed over last year's state finalists. Highlights included a thrilling comeback by Stephanie Celaya-Serventi and Carla Rodriguez at #1 doubles – down 6-1, they battled back to lose a nail-biter, 8-6. Their secret? They told me afterwards that at 1-6, they decided simply to “have fun.” Great advice, ladies!
Congratulations are in order for Kyla who battled back to win a three-set marathon, and to Julie, who overcame a shaky start to win at #4, and to Cynthia and Sadiya, who continued their winning ways. I was really proud of all the girls today -- they fought hard today and I think we're moving up to the next level.

This was a competitive match, running until nearly 8pm, which might have been closer had our #1 player not fallen ill during her match. On the advice of our trainer, we retired Stephanie after her first set. She had just recovered from the flu, but we felt she was too dehydrated to continue. She wasn’t too happy about the situation, and wanted to continue, but we’d rather have her at full strength for the rest of the season.
Kudos to Sadiya, who continues to win at #6, and to Julie and Cynthia who fought hard until losing heartbreakingly close matches. We look forward to our rematch with the Sabercats next week!

This was a great example of high school tennis as a team sport – the bottom of the order won the match for us! #1 Stephanie Celaya-Serventi was sidelined with the flu, so I was forced to juggle our doubles teams and put players together who had never played with each other before. The girls are beginning to reach their potential, and I was proud of their efforts today. Junior/Li’l Jags continue to roll, crush Chargers 11-0!
This may be our best JV squad ever. The Junior Jags rolled over Cholla with able support from the Li’l Jags. The last match of the day ended at 7:30pm, and it was an exciting victory for Li’l Jags Iliana Marroquin and Lucy Valenzuela at #2 doubles.

3/6/09 SAHUARITA 7 DESERT VIEW 2
Rosa and Vania are mighty happy about winning their first varsity match!
On the bright side, the girls are improving slowly over last year’s results – Sahuarita defeated us 9-0 in 2008. The biggest problem facing the varsity is mental, as the veterans have yet to play with confidence and determination. I think that will happen soon. In the meantime, Cynthia Ramirez had a breakthrough at #5, gaining confidence as the match went on and turning it around to win in three sets. Junior Jags Vania Meraz and Rosa Ayon took advantage of their first opportunity to play a varsity match by winning a tough match at #3 doubles.

There’s nothing worse than losing a match we should have won. Only Kyla Kemp and Julie Bermudez played up to their potential. Karina Munguia looked to be cruising at #6 until her opponent stepped up in the second set, and Karina lost her momentum, losing in a third-set tiebreaker. Our #1 doubles team fell behind early, then fought back to tie the match at 7-all, but weren’t able to finish the match. Oh well, tomorrow’s another day.

Junior and Li’l Jags Crush Trojans, 9-1!
Wow! The Junior Jags came to play and they completely dominated their opponents in singles. That gave me the opportunity to play the Lil Jags in doubles, and they rose to the occasion. Our only loss probably would have also been a win – Perla Barraza and Iliana Marroquin had roared back from a 4-1 deficit to 5-6, when the match was called due to the late hour.

The girls love playing Foothills at the beginning of the season. It’s an opportunity for them to see the best in southern Arizona tennis, and today was no exception (after all the Falcons have won state seven years in a row). After their matches, the girls were coming up to me telling me what they want to improve in their games. And there were plenty of matches – we played 30 in all – every Lady Jag got a match!

Junior Jags fall to Falcons, 9-0
We had a couple of standout performances from the young JV – sophomore Vania Meraz battled Katie Russell to the wire, falling 8-5 in the longest match of the day. Freshman Sadiya Buta was leading her opponent 3-2, until as she put it, “My legs stopped moving.” Congratulations to the Junior Jags on a great day!

Li’l Jags tumble, 12-0
It was the first high school match of their lives for most of the Li’l Jags, and I was proud of how they played. Once they got over the jitters, they played with confidence and heart despite facing opponents who have been playing since they were young. Jade Thorpe, Vielka Cordero and Anh Le gave the Falcons competitive matches.

Preseason Prognosis
(2/02/09) We've had a most successful fall camp and I'm looking forward to a return to the form of years past. Although our varsity struggled mightily last year, the Junior Jags, Li'l Jags, and Baby Jags all had successful seasons, and they are all returning! Best of all, we have a promising new crop of freshmen, which gives me four years to work with them.
Kudos go to seniors Stephanie Celaya-Serventi, Carla Rodriguez, Karina Munguia, Julie Bermudez, and junior Cynthia Ramirez, who have spent countless hours on the courts teaching the sport to our new players.
And wait until you see our spiffy new uniforms - the Lady Jags Always Look Good!
