4/15/10 DESERT VIEW 5 SAHUARO 4
This was a great win! Sahuaro has been on a roll, and we’ve been decimated by injuries, illnesses, etc. But today, we finally had our varsity back, and they sent us to the next level! With a record of 8-5, we should end up in the upper bracket of the state tournament, with a home field advantage. I am so proud of all these wonderful girls, who have faced so much adversity this year!

We were almost back to full strength today, and what a difference!. Vania recovered from her back injury and played great, and Sadiya and Cynthia recovered from their illnesses and played great, and there’s more good news – Kyla returns tomorrow after missing nearly three weeks due to surgical complications.
The girls finally played with smarts, determination, and fire today. Kudos to Yoandra and Gaby, who fought hard to win both their singles and double – neither of them gave up for a moment! They knew how important their matches were if we want to go to state, and they delivered, improving on our 7-2 win over the Tigers the first time around.

4/9/10 SAHUARITA 8 DESERT VIEW 1
Our physical woes came to a head today: Kyla is still recuperating from surgery, and Vania joined her on the inactive list, recovering from a back injury. To compound matters, both Cynthia and Sadiya played sick – Cynthia had an upset stomach and Sadiya was forced to withdraw during her match because she was unable to breathe. Too bad, because this was a match we’d have won if we were at full strength. But congratulations go to Jade Thorpe, who stepped up from JV and scored our only win.

We had so looked forward to this match, but the girls didn’t travel well and the water provided by our hosts left us all with upset stomachs. Nonetheless, we knew that it would be a tough battle without Kyla, who isn’t expected to return from surgery for another week, and the Apaches played well.

4/6/10 DESERT VIEW 9 VISTA GRANDE 0 (JV MATCH)
This was a complete surprise! Several months ago Vista Grande had called asking for a date. I sent them this one, but we never heard back from the school. We were starting practice today when they showed up, so we decided to play the match, even though we weren’t in uniform. Then we learned that Vista Grande is a new school, with only freshmen and sophomores, so we agreed to play a JV match, unlike some less hospitable teams in Tucson, who wanted to rack up the power points against these beginners.
Our Junior and Li’l Jags eagerly stepped up to the plate for their first appearance on show courts 1-6, and delivered a home run, as all of the girls played with desire, shutting out the Spartans. Lilly Truong was the day’s star, bageling her opponent at #6 singles!

Sadiya played the match of the day.
Whenever we go to play against the 8-time state champs, we go to learn what it takes to get to the next level. And they show us -- great fundamentals, huge serves, and fabulous footwork – all the elements that turn a good tennis player into a great one. Today’s highlight was Sadiya’s match against Brandee Cheung, a future college player, at #3. The score doesn’t tell the story – every game was fiercely competitive and the match ran for more than an hour. Sadiya has been playing tennis for a year and a couple months – her opponent has been playing for nearly ten years.

Junior/Li’l Jags suffer second loss, 10-0
Experience is everything when it comes to becoming a successful competitive tennis player. Our most experienced JV players have two years at the sport – their opponents today came on the court with two to three times that. Our girls learned a lot today, and they’re eager to step up their skill levels during Spring Break practice this week.

Cynthia bears down as she fights back in her second set.
Whew! This edition of the “Battle of the Views” was a nailbiter, but Cynthia and Sadiya pulled it out for us, at #1 doubles, in the final match of the day. Kyla and Vania are still struggling, but I hope they’ll regain form tomorrow against perennial state champs Catalina Foothills. Nothing improves a player’s game more than playing against the best. And kudos to Anh and Gaby, who are improving so fast!

Junior/Li’l Jags continue to roll with another bagel, 6-0!
What more can I say about our JV? They’re a blue-collar team – they simply pick up their tools, walk on the court and take care of business with no drama. Junior Anna Brown extended her unbeaten string to 7 straight matches with another workmanlike performance. Congratulations, Anna!

3/24/10 DESERT VIEW 8 SAHUARO 1
The team is starting to gel. Sahuaro has always been our rival for second place – we have often split with the Cougars in past years, but today, the Lady Jags came to play! Cynthia found her confidence and played with patience and intelligence at #1, Sadiya was her usual dependable self at #3, Vania won her second consecutive 3-setter, and Anh and Gaby were on fire. The only disappointment cam at #2: Kyla returned from surgery and the rust showed. However, she regrouped to win a close match in doubles with Vania.

Dang! I was really looking forward to this match, but sometimes things are simply beyond our control. Kyla bravely returned from surgery, but after three games, she realized she couldn’t continue because she was having trouble breathing. We’re giving her the week off, even though it may mean more struggles.
We also had three players ineligible, something I’ve never experienced before. They’re all working hard to regain their eligibility, and I hope to have them back tomorrow for our next conference match against Sahuaro. Well, now you know why I have all these gray hairs…

Junior/Li’l Jags get first loss, 7-3
The Junior Jags and Li’l Jags also had to step up in the ladder. Thy fought hard, but weren’t able to defeat the Apaches, who are always strong on both the varsity and JV levels. I hope it’s a good wake up call for the girls to see what’s ahead – Catalina Foothills on Friday, for one. Kudos to Anna Brown, who won the longest match of the day – she never gave up! And welcome back to Ariel Ruiz, who played with a vengeance today!

Junior/L’il Jags do it again – Another bagel, 8-0!
It was another excellent performance by the JV and Li’l Jags. Arely and Ariel led the way with shutouts, and Junior Anna Brown continues to be undefeated as a Lady Jaguar singles player, but the highlight of the day for me was Li’l Jags Marlene and Lilly, who clawed their way to win a hard-fought match at #1 JV doubles! Way to go, Li’l Jags!!!

3/16/10 DESERT VIEW 6 CATALINA 3
It seems to be one adversity after another for the girls this year: last week #4 Vania Meraz was out of action because of an auto accident; this week, we’re without #2 Kyla Kemp due to emergency surgery over the weekend. (She’s on the road to recovery, I’m glad to report) But the team found a way once again to win, this time against a solid Catalina squad. Almost all of the matches were close and hard-fought. Kudos to Yoandra, who rebounded from a shaky first set to win in third-set tiebreaker, and to former Junior Jag Anh, who had her second straight pair of singles and doubles wins since moving up to varsity!

The girls showed their true character today in an important conference match. Our #4 player, Vania Meraz, was banged up in an auto accident on her way to school Monday and needs some time off. Co-captain Kyla Kemp was extremely ill (even sicker than her beloved coach, who’s not having a good day either), but insisted on playing – she told me, “I’m captain, and I can’t let my team down.” Despite having to take several breaks to vomit (seven times!), she won a marathon 2-hour plus singles match in three sets, and then won her doubles match as well, with JV player, Anh Le, who moved up to Varsity #6, and won both her matches. I am extremely proud of how the entire team stepped up today. We showed ourselves that WE ARE A TEAM!!!

3/4/10 PUEBLO 5 DESERT VIEW 4
This was a heartbreaker. Pueblo came to play and that seemed to have caught some of our players by surprise. We also had a real scare when standout sophomore Sadiya Buta went down with a rolled ankle in the first game of the second set of her singles. After treatment, she insisted on playing out the match, and won 6-0, 6-0. Despite being unable to plant her feet and hit hard, she still competed at #1 doubles with her excellent partner Cynthia Ramirez in a thrilling match that went back and forth, only to lose in an extended tiebreaker.

3/2/10 DESERT VIEW 7 SUNNYSIDE 2
Other than an uncharacteristically nervous performance by #1 Cynthia Ramirez, this young team made me very proud today, recapturing the SUSD title from a scrappy Blue Devil squad. Kudos to Kyla Kemp at #2, who came from behind in both sets to win a second-set tiebreaker, 7-0, and to all our doubles teams, who were patient against some very interesting strategies, indeed. Sunnyside’s Coach Parks always has something up his sleeve.
