4/11 DESERT VIEW 6 MARANA 3
I couldn’t be any prouder of the girls than I am today. Kino foe Marana beat us in our first conference match, 6-3, but this time the Lady Jags turned the tables on them. We had great performances from all – everyone on the team won singles or doubles (or both), so it was a most satisfying afternoon. Kudos to Gladys, Savannah, and Xylia who played extra matches so all of the Marana girls could play.

4/11 DESERT 5 VIEW SAHUARITA 4
Student Council hung banners honoring our seniors and stayed to cheer them on against Sahuarita.
Our wonderful seniors: Xylia, Arely, Anna, Gaby, and Amanda!
Next year's varsity applauds their accomplishments.
Senior Night proved to be a cliffhanger. We were down 4-3 with two close doubles matches still on the court and it was the underclassmen, along with senior Anna Brown, who came to the rescue. Anna and partner Sadiya Buta stepped it up at 4-all, just after juniors Marlene Martinez and Cristina Figueroa walked off with a narrow escape at #3 doubles. This is a rewarding win for the Lady Jags, as we lost to the Mustangs last year 8-1. Way to go, Lady Jags!

Sadiya and I expected that she would play well against Cristina Oropeza, but she lost her composure early and made a slew of unforced errors, and ended up losing a match she could have won. To her credit, she regrouped and went out with doubles partner Anna, and the two of them were BEASTS, and exacted revenge for their singles match losses. It was a great match to watch, and the entire team was pumped. Or maybe they were pumped because Library Clerk Dennis Dewoody, our biggest fan, treated them to a post-match pizza fest… Thanks, Dennis!!!

What a disappointing match – three tiebreakers and we lost them all! I saw very little mental toughness from the girls today in their tiebreakers – they were not playing to win – they were playing “not to lose,” so of course, they lost. Their opponents didn’t do anything differently, the Jags did, and it wasn’t what they were supposed to do. We need to work on that right away, with Nogales and Sahuarita coming up this week. Only Sadiya and Cristina continued to play solid singles today, which shows in their scores.

It seems as if a different hero steps up every match to save the day for the Lady Jags. Today it was the doubles team of Arely and Cristina. Both wilted in their singles matches in the 100-degree heat, but they rebounded to win at #2 doubles to secure the team victory at 7:15 pm, making this a 4-hour match! Sadiya and Anna were awesome at #1 and #2 singles and perfect in their number one doubles match.

I got to see the singles match of the year today. Sadiya squared off against her off-season hitting buddy, Vivian Pierson – last year’s 4A regional champion, and currently undefeated. It was a seesaw battle that lasted more than two hours before Sadiya handed Pierson her first loss of the season in a thrilling tiebreaker. Kudos also go to Savannah Sanchez who played her first varsity match and won handily.

What an exciting match! With the match tied at 4-all, it came down to #3 doubles. Marlene and Cristina were playing in only their second varsity match, but held a 7-6 lead when Mountain Views lights went out. Knowing that the match was on the line, our girls stepped up their game and won in the dark! Kudos also to Sadiya, Anna, and Arely, who all contributed to the victory. Way to go, Lady Jags!

3/22 SAHUARO 6 DESERT VIEW 3
The new, rebuilt Lady Jags faced a tough Sahuaro team today, and they learned a great deal about what they need to do to improve. Arely Robles and Marlene Martinez both took it onto the court for their doubles, and earned a hard-fought win. Gaby Serrano bounced back from a disappointing singles match at #2 to team with Sadiya Buta in a dominating doubles win. Sadiya continues to play smart tennis (with occasional hiccups), and again won in straight sets. Tomorrow, we have our work cut out for us in a long road trip to powerhouse Nogales. But I can see this team getting better with each match.

Junior Jags continue to roll, winning 7-2!
I couldn’t be prouder of the JV today, who encountered their first challenge, and they came up smelling like roses. First-year player Savannah Sanchez continued her unbeaten streak , and captain Cristina Figueroa is gaining confidence with each win, even though her 8-game matches still last longer than most of the varsity 2-out-of-3 set matches. Way to go, Junior Jags!

3/10 MARANA 6 DESERT VIEW 3
Sadiya continues to excel at #1, winning again in straight sets!
Tough day for the Lady Jags. #5 Anna Brown was laid up with a serious infection and couldn’t play and #4 Iliana Marroquin probably should have stayed in bed, too, but she put forth a brave effort, and helped the team with her presence. Gaby is becoming the “Queen of the Tiebreakers,” but today it didn’t go her way.

Our first match of the season was a doozy – with a trio of 3-set matches. Playing Pueblo has always been competitive and close, and this was no exception – Senior Gaby Serrano clinched the win with a classic come-from-behind victory in a three setter that lasted two and a half hours! Another highlight of the day was Sadiya Buta’s debut at #1 – she was all business, and the first off the court!
