Brian and Stefan went to the same private American school in Luxembourg but didn't speak to each other until they met outside a tube station in London.  They formed a band called Ashtray Heart, then Stefan introduced Brian to Robert Schultzberg and they became Placebo.  Steve played in a number of bands before Placebo and had played on the Placebo demos but other commitments prevented him from joining the band.  When Robert 'left' Steve was the first person Brian phoned.
