HARBOR DEFENSE AT THE GOLDEN GATE

As viewed from a recon plane, San Francisco Bay was guarded by several U.S. Army forts armed with heavy-caliber artillery. In addition, a series of underwater minefields sealed off the Bay from enemy submarines and surface vessels. Further measures included submarine nets and offshore Navy sonar devices. 155mm LONG TOM BATTERIES

Reinforcing the permanent defenses were 155mm "Long Tom" Army guns mounted on concrete turntables and sited to fire on landing beaches and zones out of range of the big guns.

COMMAND POST MESSAGE CENTER

Though the enemy fleet might have been far from the Golden Gate, the Harbor Defenses were on constant alert. A telephone system kept contact between all gun positions, artillery observers, and the command posts.
