Finland

Me at the Mid Autumn Festival, doing one of my very favorite things -- eating Chinese food! I'm with my French flatmate Olivier, who took some of the photos here. Aaahh... Finland! This is what it's all about: relaxing on a sunset evening by the lake, after a refreshing sauna, with some bratwurst on the fire. Aaaahh...
I woke up to a huge surprise on October 5th - SNOW!!! This view is from our window that morning. Rumor has it that this will be the coldest winter in memory... Tampere, my current home, is the second biggest city in Finland (pop. 200,000). The city was once an industrial center, with the factory area now converted into the ritzy Finlayson restaurant district.
One of the most beautiful areas in Tampere is Pyynikki, a thin ridge overlooking the two giant lakes that surround the city. The residents of Pyynikki are legendary for being friendly neighbors. Ice Hockey: the Finnish National Passion. We had fantastic seats to this game between the two Tampere teams. I came in with team loyalty, as my Mom was an Ilves fan when she went to college in Tampere. Go Wildcats!
We had a rare treat in early October, as the Northern Lights were clearly visible from Tampere. This picture was taken from our window, but does not do justice to the fingers of light that danced across the night sky. On a trip to Helsinki in October, I stayed with some cousins who are my closest relatives in Finland. One place we visited was the national cemetery, where nearly all of the country's heroes are buried.
