When I first moved to Eastern Ky back in 1989, I found out about a local festival called Hillbilly Days. Every year people come from all over the world to Pikeville, Kentucky to celebrate the Hillbilly Culture. There is music, crafts, food, a carnival, and even a parade.
A word of warning to anyone interested in attending the festival. It always rains during Hillbilly Days. It never fails!
Every year in April when Hillbilly Days arrives, the local people dress up to celebrate the mountain culture.
I dressed up for Hillbilly Days at just about every place that I worked while living in Eastern Ky. I always blacked out my teeth and usually wore a sign that said "Will Work 4 Moonshine" or "Won't Work 4 Nuthin". I got a straw hat several years ago to add to my costume.
I always brought one of my puppets along. Scarlett the Skunk, Kritter, Hogwash and Oswald are among everyones favorites. Scarlett has a bad habit of wetting on anyone who tries to pet her. Hogwash also has a bladder problem. Kritter likes to squirt people with his soda can and Oswald makes a "Caw" sound like a crow.
One year we filmed a video with the Cobb Clan for Christmas. We used the song "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer". Along with Jimmy Joe were Grandma, Grandpa, Bubby and Cousin Al.
Jimmy Joe also appeared in two of my Masterpiece videos including "Friend Like U" and "Out Of This World".
While working at Sykes I dressed up as Jimmy Joe for three years in a row for Hillbilly Days. I would usually carry my video camera around with me filming my co-workers and their crazy antics. One year several of us took off our shoes and had a
Hillbilly Hoedown.
The last time I portrayed Jimmy Joe was at Sykes in 2003. My friend Denna dressed up as a big Hillbilly baby, Baby DD.
Jimmy Joe has appeared in the following videos:
1. Friend Like U - November 1999
2. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - March 2000
3. Out Of This World - April 2000
