Casting Off
* Make sure everyone on the boat has a life jacket (Type I, II, or III PFD). * Release all lines except the bow line. * Raise only the mainsail and let it luff. * Do a 360° scan of the area to scope out the boat traffic. * Estimate your departure speed until you're fully underway. * When ready, have a crew member release the bow line. * Sheet in the mainsail until it stops luffing. * Back the boat until the bow clears the stern of all moored craft. * Select the appropriate heading. * Sail out of the mooring area with mainsail only. * When your boat is out of the mooring area, raise the jib, trim the sails and be under way.
