Landing and Docking The Sailboat
LANDING & DOCKING THE SAILBOAT
Pier and mooring landings:
Landings Under Sail.
Landings When Engine is engaged.
Landings Under Tow.
Approach the landing at an angle with the sail set at a reach and
ready to luff, making sure that the hull speed is slow enough so
that the boat coasts to a stop at the pier or mooring.
Be prepared to abort the landing and tack out towards sea if the
boat is coming in too fast or if the landing is stalled by waves
and/or shifting wind conditions.
Be ready to sail in reverse in order to turn the bow out to sea by
backwinding the main sail.
[NOTE: Avoid jibing in the landing area.]
DOCKING THE SAILBOAT
(Berthing)
To Berth (i.e., to Tie-up at a Pier) is an art. The reasons to tie-up
at a pier are varied. But the main consideration is to protect the
Vessel.
