RUNNING AGROUND
Leeward shore:
Drop all sails and deploy one anchor immediately. Using PFDs or a small
Dinghy for buoyancy, float a second Anchor Offshore into deeper water,
approximately thirty to fifty feet from the Vessel, deploing the Anchor
at the Bottom and Kedge.
Weather shore:
When the Keel runs aground, immediately drop the Headsail and induce
Heel to get the Keel off the Bottom. At the same time, attempt to
back the boat out the same direction from whence it came, by
backwinding the Mainsail, pushing the boom as far forward as
possible while adjusting the tiller until it is perpendicular to
the Boom. If that fails, float an Anchor offshore into deeper water,
using PFDs or small Dinghy, deploy and Kedge.
If all else fails, signal for assistance. In any case, do not risk
injury in order to get the boat free.
