JACK LINE
(Harness Jack Line)
1. Cable, Wire Rope, or Line rigged Bow to Stern and/or Athwartships
on Deck, providing a Lifeline onto which a Safety Harness is attached.
2. Flat webbing or Rope, running Fore-And-Aft along the sides and partially
around the Transom of a Dinghy. Used as a Lifeline for one to grab onto to
assist one to Board the Boat from the water.
JACKSTAY
The Stay Fitted on top of the Spar or Yard to which the Head of a
Quadrilateral Sail is Bent.

JACOBS LADDER
A Rope ladder lowered from the Deck and over the side. Used for
bringing people Aboard from other boats such as pilots and
other passengers while out on the water.
JAM CLEAT
A Cleat having a short Horn and another Horn that extends at an angle from
the base with a tapering slot. The Line is Snubed with a single turn round
the short Horn, and is Secured when the Fall is jammed into the slot.

JAMMER

JAWS

JETTY
A structure of stones, concrete piles, etc., projecting from
Shore, for the purpose of protecting a Harbor and/or preventing
Shore erosion by deflecting Currents and Waves, sometimes used
as a landing Pier or Wharf.
JIB
A term used to describe any of the triangular Sails set forward of
the Mast.

JIBE
(Gybe)
Putting the Stern of a Sailboat through the Eye-Of-The-Wind when
Sailing Dead-Down-Wind.

JIFFY REEFING
A method of quickly reducing Sail area during a Blow.
The steps to Jiffy Reefing are the following:
1. Ease the Mainsail Halyard until the Luff Cringle can be
attached to the Horn Cleat on the Boom at the Gooseneck;
2. Once the Luff Cringle is Secured, pull the Leech Cringle
down and Secure it to the Aft end of the Boom by the
Reefing Line;
3. Tension and Secure the Halyard;
4. Gather the Bunt of the Sail at the Foot and Secure with Reefing Ties;
5. Trim the Sails and get Underway.
JIGGER
A small Sail set on the Jiggermast or Mizzenmast of a Yawl or Ketch.
JIGGERMAST
A small Mast set well Aft of the Main Mast on a Fore-And-Aft Rig.

The main valve in a marine toilet.
JOLLY ROGER
A flag with a white skull and crossbones on a black field,
originally flown on pirate ships in the 1700's.
JUMP SHIP
(Bail)
Sailor slang for one being Absent Without Leave (AWOL).
[e.g., "If the Grog doesn't improve, some will Jump Ship."]

JUMPER STAY
A Stay coming down and out from the Masthead, passing over a
Jumper Strut, then inclining back to the Mast again for the
purpose of stiffening the upper Mast.
JUMPER STRUT
A short spreader for the Jumper Stay.
JUMP-THE-MAST
When Crew Bouse Halyards that run inside the Mast.
JUNCTION BUOY
Preferred-Channel-Buoy)
A red and green horizontally striped Buoy used to mark the
separation of a Channel into two Channels. The preferred
channel is indicated by the color of the uppermost stripe.
[e.g., A Junction Buoy with the color Red on top indicates
that the preferred channel is to the right (Starboard) of
the Vessel returning from Sea.]
