"NAUTICAL" To "NUN BUOY"

Nautical, Nautical Almanac, Nautical Day, Nautical Mile,
Navigable Waters, Navigation, Navigation Aids, Navigation Buoy,
Navigation Hazards. Navigation Lights, Navigation Rules,
Navigation Station, Navigator, Navy-Type Anchor, Neap Tide,
Neaped, Noon Sight, Normanpin, North Pole, North Star,
Notice To Mariners, Nun Buoy.

NAUTICAL
Pertaining to Sailors, Vessels, Navigation, and other Maritime activity.

NAUTICAL ALMANAC
An annual publication containing information about the position of
the sun, moon, planets and stars, used for Celestial Navigation.

NAUTICAL DAY
A period from noon of one day until noon of the next, used in
determining time Aboard ship.

NAUTICAL MILE
A Nautical Mile is approximately 2,024 yards, and equal to one
minute of Latitude measured along a Meridian of Longitude. The
distance measure at Sea is equivalent to 6067.12 feet, 1.15 statute
miles, or 1852 meters. When measuring for speed, one Nautical Mile
per hour is equivalent to one Knot per hour.

NAVIGABLE WATERS
Waters that are used by commercial Vessels as well as leisure craft,
and are governed by laws and rules administered and enforced by the
United States Coast Guard (USCG).

NAVIGATION
To plot, ascertain, and direct the Course of a Vessel using Nautical
Charts to accurately identify, locate, and measure reference points.

NAVIGATION HAZARD
(See FLOTSUM)

NAVIGATION LIGHTS
(Running Lights)
Navigation Lights (Running Lights) as used by Sailing Vessels
Underway at night include a red light indicating Port Side,
a green light indicating Starboard, and a white Stern light.

NAVIGATION RULES
(Rules-Of-The-Road)
USCG traffic rules concerning which Vessel is Stand-On and which is
Giveway, used for reducing the possibility of boat collision.

NAVIGATION STATION
(Nav Station)
The area On Board a Vessel designated for Navigation operations.

NAVIGATOR
One who is skilled in the art of Navigation.

NAVY-TYPE ANCHOR
(Old-fashioned Anchor)
A traditionally shaped Anchor with Flukes perpendicular to the Stock
and connected by a Shank.

NEAP TIDE
(Qaudrature)
A period of little Tidal movement and the least variation of water
level occurring midway between Spring Tides when the moon is
one quarter and three quarters full.

NEAPED
(Beneaped)
A term used to describe a Vessel Aground until the next cycle of Spring Tides.

NOON SIGHT
A Celestial Navigation sighting taken when the sun is at its highest
point in the sky.

NORMANPIN
A short steel bar of small circumference that passes through the
upper third of the Samson Post to which Line or Rope is Belayed.

NORTH POLE
(Magnetic Pole)
The northernmost point of the axis line about which the earth rotates.

NORTH STAR
(Polaris)
The star, seen in the Northern Hemisphere, indicating North.

NOTICE TO MARINERS
A publication of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency with
participation by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and
National Ocean Service, concerning navigational safety
and updating charts. Included in the publication are
notices of changes with regard to Shore and
Channel Aids-TO-Navigation (ATONs).

NUN BUOY
A conical shaped Buoy painted red with even numbers and used as an
Aid To Navigation (ATON) on US waterways. Red Buoys are kept to the
right or Starboard side of the Vessel when returning from Sea.
