"UNCONTROLLED JIBE" To "UTILITY OUTBOARD"

Uncontrolled Jibe, Under Bare Poles, Under Sail, Under-The-Lee,
Underway, Unfurl, United States Coast Guard, Universal Time,
Up Anchor, Upwind, Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB),
USCG, Utility Outboard.

UNCONTROLLED JIBE
(Accidental Jibe)
An Uncontrolled Jibe occurs when Sailing Downwind on a Run, the
Stern abruptly passes through the Eye-Of-The-Wind, with the Wind
catching the exposed Sail area. This causes the Boom to swing
abruptly, with great force, a full 180° to the other side
of the boat, potentially injuring Crew and destroying Rigging.

UNDER BARE POLES

UNDER SAIL
A Sailing Vessel Making Way without Auxillary Power.

UNDER-THE-LEE
On the Lee side of an object, protected from the Wind.

UNDERWAY
A Vessel moving Through-The-Water but not necessarily Making Way.

UNFURL
To unfold or unroll a Sail.
(The opposite of FURL)

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD
(USCG)
The federal organization of the United States that is empowered to
administer and enforce the Maritime Rules Of The Road on all U.S.
Navigable waters.

UNIVERSAL TIME
A time standard that is not affected by Time Zones or seasons.
The term Universal Time is now applied to Greenwich Mean Time.

UP ANCHOR
To raise the Anchor off the Bottom.

UPWIND
To Windward and toward the Eye-Of-The-Wind.

URGENT MARINE INFORMATION BROADCAST
(UMIB)
Communications from the USCG over emergency radio channels alerting
boaters of sightings reported from land based observers or emergency
situations called in from Vessels On-The-Water.

USCG
(See UNITED STATES COAST GUARD

UTILITY OUTBOARD
A boat specifically designed for outboard motors and used primarily
for transporting people, gear, and supplies to and from Shore and
between other larger Vessels.
