Ludwig II (1845-1886) succeeded his father as sovereign of Bavaria, Maximilian II, at a young age. The 18-year old king had to face a world of developing industrialization and war, whilst he rather spent his life on the beauty and truth of art. He had a close relationship with his cousin, the Austrian empress Elizabeth (Sissi), in whom he had found a soulmate. Ludwig II was a great admirer of Richard Wagner, who he freed of all financial worries the moment he ascended the throne. He had an artificial cave built with some kind of stage especially for listening to perfomances of Wagner's opera's at Schloss Linderhof. Ludwig II built three castles: Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee (after Versailles) and Neuschwanstein, and had plans for some other great projects. The way Ludwig II spent his money made him impopular with the ministers, who faced bankruptcy. In 1886 Ludwig II was declared mentally ill and deposed. A few days later, on June 13, he died mysteriously in the Starnbergsee. This biography is the basis of the musical 'Ludwig II - Longing for paradise', that had it's premiere on April 7, 2000. The musical is not a historical play, but a fascinating drama.
Especially for the musical a theatre was built, on a artificially constructed bank in the Forggensee. It was designed by Josephine Barbarino and has 1400 seats. From this theater as well as the near surroundings you have an astounding view on the mountains and lakes where the musical takes place.
