Serrasalmus neveriensis

Machado-Allison, A., W. L. Fink., H. López Rojas and R. Rodenas  1993

INTRODUCTION

There is no information on this species other than the description by Machado-Allison, et. al. It is likely the species would behave similar to is close appearing congener, S. medinai. For aquarium care, should the species become available, requirements would likely be the same as that of S. medinai. Daniel Caballero is presently collecting aquarium care data from his specimen (see photo below). In the future this page may contain additional care information. I am grateful to both Ivan, Edouard (new photos and video-2012) and Daniel for sharing the photos and potential data on this species.

Serrasalmus neveriensis is a 1993 discovery and little on record concerning it. It strongly resembles S. medinai and is externally separated by the number of spots on the body which is usually less than on S. medinai. The preserved (formalin) photo only brings out the more prominent spots, smaller less indicative spots would not appear. This fish was found in a naturally closed off section of water. Its development defers from S. medinai in only a few characters which separate the two species from each other. I'm very fortunate to be able to show live photos of this species collected by Ivan Mikolji and George Fear at the Rio Neveri. It is striking how similar this species is to S. medinai. S. neveriensis has a slightly deeper body (dorsoventrally) than S. medinai and more yellow on belly, while S. medinai is more orange. The adipose fin is larger approaching the size of Pygopristis denticulata than S. medinai. This species also has a longer snout than S. medinai.

The species is still being scrutinized by Dr. William L. Fink and I hope to have more data on it in the near future. Authorities have some problems with being able to visual separate the two species because of being near twins.
