and stationed in Halifax, NS, with the Royal Artillery in 1801.

Brookvale, PEIValentine's Day Greetings to all near and far.

Here on Prince Edward Island, we are enjoying a Canadian winter with a rink in our back yard and ski lessons for our grandchildren, which encourages us to get outdoors and to head for the hills with them.

Since Christmas we have been working at finding ways of staying in touch with extended family and sharing family stories. We hope you find HomePort here at IanScott.ca helps you stay connected. Scott material starts at the Scott@HomePort link. We hope to make contact other ways but find that email addresses change and sometimes we have no contact information, so please consider sharing this with others who share our Scott/Dalgity connection.

Family From Forfar - Update
Considering it is Valentine's Day it may be a good time to share some exciting news recently located on the research front which even has some romance in the story.
An area of research regarding the 1840's and 1850's, when the Nova Scotia Scott family migrated to the Boston area, is now being filled in and has produced a new chapter of the family history called Try, Try, Try Again and yes there is a wedding involved. It includes one of the biggest surprises I have found in many years of research and has rewritten what we know about the family's history during an era when several branches of the family, after five decades in Nova Scotia, moved to the Boston area.

Ian, Barbara
            & Wally Scott 2016
We were saddened to learn of the recent death of Wally Scott at the age of 86 in Evanston, IL. I corresponded with Wally for many years and finally had a chance to meet him and his lovely wife Barbara when they visited Prince Edward Island in 2016. Wally gave me a copy of his memoir, Footprints, and in meeting him and reading his book in the weeks afterwards I realized what a fine and insightful
man he was. His obituary tells of his lengthy career and his life, as does an excellent article in the Chicago Tribune. When Northwestern University was honouring the contributions of various individuals at an anniversary celebration in the School of Business they noted that both at the start - and 100 years later - there was a Walter Dill Scott on faculty. Wally served as Clinical Professor Emeritus of Strategy and as Senior Austin Fellow at the same university where his namesake grandfather had been the President each playing important roles in their own century. For his grandfather it was during a formative time that transformed what was a small local university into a major international institution. An article published in 2001 praised that ongoing connection of service of several generations. Wally while maintaining a strong family tradition of dedication to the education and mentoring of a new generation, went far beyond any expectations in his role and was an inspiration to all who met him. Our sincere condolences to Barbara, and all his family for their loss.

Gathering of Clan Scott - Summer of 2019

Clan Scott members worldwide anticipate an invitation to a Clan Scott Gathering which is typically held every five years. Typically the invitation has come from
Sir Richard Scott, Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury as Chief of Clan Scott. Attending these events in 2009 & 2014 has encouraged me to recommend these opportunities to anyone with a Scott connection. Focused mainly on events and group tours in the Borders where Clan Scott remains one of the dominant families, these reunions use facilities like Abbotsford, the historic home of Sir Walter Scott, with events hosted by Sir Richard, at his Bowhill House nearby. Clan Scott Society assists with organizing and anyone with an interest should consider membership now, so they will be able to register should the established pattern continue in 2019.

Facebook Friends

Increasingly Facebook is a great way of staying connected to friends and family.

If you are on Facebook, and we haven't found each other already please send a friend request so we can stay connected. Also you can connect through
Instagram or LinkedIn, or send an email.
Ancestral History Update

The writing efforts continue beyond the website and newsletter to complete a family history with pictures, and also update a genealogy of descendants at the same time. This will require help from others so I look forward to making direct contact with as many descendants as possible regarding updates on their own branch of the family. Meanwhile our shared family story is available under the current Family From Forfar title. In January I began adding content to a family tree at FamilySearch.org which any registered user can add information to. One way to view some of that growing genealogy is through this Scott/Dalgity family tree. Only information on deceased individuals shows up in the public view. As always, we are keen to hear from others, to see pictures, learn of family history, and current family activities.

For Valentine's Day the bard himself will provide the final word.

Love rules the court, the camp, the grove,
And men below, and saints above: For love is heaven, and heaven is love.

Sir Walter Scott, (1771 - 1832)

Sincerely, Ian Scott
