A newsletter for
descendants & relatives of
Sgr. David & Jean (Dalgity) Scott
who married at Forfar, Scotland in 1795, and were
stationed
in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the
Royal Artillery in 1801.
Hello to everyone
from Prince Edward Island! Memorial Day greetings to
everyone in the US. Although we have different holidays
in Canada, I understand that many families combine a
family gathering with a Memorial Day visit to
cemeteries, as well as acknowledging the contributions
of veterans at this time as well. I was visiting a
cemetery today myself and realized the value of FindaGrave.com
which allows us to locate and add images of ancestors
and relatives to pictures of their headstones. Though
the efforts of local history buffs, often the actual
headstone are photographed and the location given, this
allows family to add photographs and other items about
family member. While it remains a work in progress and
not all cemeteries have volunteers to upload content and
photograph headstones, people can add graves that have
not already been documented or ask for help from
volunteers.
Recently I learned of the efforts of James Struckmeyer
III who is a member of the 3rd Pittsburgh Line and a 4th
cousin of mine. Jamie's career in the military (US Air
Force) has allowed him to travel extensively and
cultivated his strong interest in history as well. He
has been adding photographs and linking the relationship
between family members within the ten generation
descendants of Sgr David & Jean Scott as well as
other branches of his family. It is a wonderful way to
visit graves (paying our respects from a distance) and,
to add information that paints a larger picture or puts
a face to a name. As an example of how these work, I
have included the entry for Sgr.
David Scott to honour his service as a military
veteran today. You will find that it links to the work
Jamie has been doing. The entry for his
great-great-grandfather Thomas Forester Scott is
another good starting point. Please consider adding
content that others can access, as we honour those who
have gone before.
On the Canadian side of the border, is a serving
member of Canada's armed forces Robie Scott in Saint Croix, Nova Scotia. I want to extend
sincerest congratulations to Robie and his wife
Stephanie Scott who were married on the 18th of May in the Saint Croix United
Church, a church that his great-great grandfather David
Scott was instrumental in having built Robie's
grandfather Fred and great grandfather John Albert
Scott spanned over a century of combined service to the
same congregation as elders. Stephanie and Robie are busy parents of a
son as well as active farmers. Like his
great-great-great-great grandfather Sgr. David Scott,
Robie's military service is based in Halifax an hour's
drive away. It is the city where my father Rev. Jack
Scott was based with the Royal Canadian Navy during WW
II, a key area in what Churchill dubbed The Battle of
the Atlantic.
To all who currently serve, and those who have served in
the past we raise our salute of thanks.
Mother's Day
Although a bit late in delivering Mother's Day greetings
this year -- it is never too late to celebrate mothers
of all generations. And while we remember those who
serve and sacrifice in a variety of other capacities on
Memorial Day, May is a month when we also honour
mothers. Jean Dalgity Scott would have been aware of the
challenges of military families - and with the death of
her husband, Sgr. David in 1803 she became a widowed
mother of three young children. My own mother likewise
named Jean Scott faced a similar situation with three
children to raise under the age of 12. The photo at right
is of Nettie with her son Robert Hunter. Today
I would like to honour Nettie (Little) Poorman who is
101 years old and learned the challenge of being widowed
at the age of 38 with two sons. Sons who are very proud
of her. To Nettie and all mothers past and present - we
also raise our salute of thanks.
Trip to Scotland -- 2025
- A
Clan Scott gathering in
Scotland is planned for June 2025 - just a
year away. Plans have not been announced fully
but will include major Scott sites in the
Borders and Edinburgh with highlights
including Bowhill
House (seat of the current Chief of Clan
Scott in the Borders) and Abbotsford
the historic home of Sir Walter Scott. We
attended similar events in 2009 and 2014 and
look forward to attending this event as well.
The 2024
plan which was rescheduled to 2025 gives
an idea of major locations. Contacting Clan
Scott Society directly is the best way
to be on their mailing list for future
announcements.

The Fluuers o
the Forest (The Flowers of the Forest)
We send our sincerest condolences to everyone remembering
deceased family members at this time, especially the family of:
- Carolann
Reaves, who
died May 2, 2024. Carolann was a supervising nurse with
Brigham & Woman's Hospital in Boston until her
retirement and resided in the home she grew up in, located
in Dedham, MA. She is a member of the 3rd Boston Line as a
great granddaughter of Daniel DeWolf Scott & Abigail
McNutt. We met through a mystery
photo from 1910, I had posted on Homeport, 20 years
ago. Carolann was my third cousin and she travelled to visit
us in 2005, arranging to meet in Nova Scotia so I could show
her family homes, and introduced her to relatives. She
visited us on Prince Edward Island a few days later. In 2009
Carolann joined my sister, daughter, wife and myself in
Scotland where we travelled to Clan Scott events as well as
Edinburgh and the ancestral village of Forfar, north of
Dundee.
- Faye
(West) Hunter, died on March 7, 2024. Faye lived in
Bolivia, North Carolina with her husband Robert Hunter who,
is also a direct descendant of the 3rd Boston Line.
I had the opportunity to meet Bob and Faye at the 100th
birthday of Bob's mother, Nettie (Little) Poorman in 2023 as
we gathered at the home Nettie shares with son Richard and
his wife at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
Tears are the softening showers which
cause the seed of heaven to spring up in the human heart.

History Update -
Research continues
towards completion of a family history. I look forward
to making direct contact with as many descendants as
possible to update their branch of the family tree.
Meanwhile our shared family story of early generations
is available under the Family
From Forfar title. We have a framework of
the earliest generations in family tree format at
FamilySearch.org which any registered user can add or
link material to. The growing genealogical
material on FamilySearch.org can be navigated through
this link.
As well
the linking of FindaGrave.com
mentioned above continues.
Research on a genealogy of
descendants continues, we do have partial
numbers and know that
Sgr. David and Jean Scott have at least:
3 children
11 grandchildren
47 great-grandchildren
49 great-great-grandchildren
66 great-great-great-grandchildren
111 great-great-great-great-grandchildren
170 great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren
(so far)
87
great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren
(so far)
18
great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren
(so

We hope that HomePort (IanScott.ca)
is helpful in sharing
family history. Scott material starts at Scott@HomePort.
Please feel free to share these links with
others.
