Detours, the autobiography of Henry Southwick Maxfield 1923 - ? is a collection of true stories, told chronologically, written not only for my heirs but primarily as a personal discovery.
Engaging in the ongoing, intriguing question as to what extent genealogy, environment and experience have shaped me. It is a process of value to everyone to better understand not only me but those would be autobiographers..It continues to be an interesting process and I recommend it.
My self imposed rules are to tell the truth based on vivid memories and adjusting the narrations to the different ages i.e at the age of ten to remember as a ten year old, without reference to the known future. I have tried not to get ahead of myself – not easy to do.
My chief assets are my almost total, detailed recall and as a writer and author of 7 published books, principally known as a storyteller and satirist.
Legacy of a Spy, A Dangerous Man, (filmed as The Double Man starring Yul Brynner) Another Spring, The Weltschmerz Plan, Justice Justice, by Henry S Maxfield (the proper way to identify it), The Morland Syndrome, To The Survivors and Detours Book I
Born in 1923 I have witnessed and performed in the Depression, Prohibition, WW II, Intelligence CIA, (Korean Conflict), Business (Maxfield Real Estate - my own), 75 year and a continuing happy marriage, two children, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren. I love them all.
Laughter is good. Laughing at yourself is even better.
I continue to have a lust for life. I almost always did everything the hard way. My course has never been easy or smooth. It seems inevitable for Henry Southwick Maxfield.

The Morland Syndrome, written in the late 60s, deals with an intense struggle between Harry MacMasters, an amnesiac, and psychiatrist Milton Cohen. Dr.Cohen is determined to bring John Morland back to reality. MacMasters discovers almost immediately that he was John Morland and the more he learns about Morland the more determined he is to not to be his former self.
When MacMasters decides not to continue to see Cohen, Dr.Cohen threatens to blackmail him with evidence of Morland’s many hostile acts considering it his duty to notify the authorities. Why, he asks Cohen, do you want to kill a thoroughly decent man to bring back a mean-spirited alcoholic failure?
. The Morland Syndrome is a powerful story – a genuine challenge to our society with fully developed, interesting characters each with his/her own problems. Rereading this after an absence of several years has astonished me. It is a significant work better than I had realized, certainly worthy of serious attention and a truly American work. I believe this story will have a greater impact than if it had been published immediately after its completion. It is a story no reader is likely forget

Buncher 6, fighter attacks on the way in, flak barrages on the bomb run, resumed fighter attacks on the surviving bombers on the way out, resulting in more casualities than all the Marines in WWII. This is an authentic story of young airmen on suicidal missions, dealing with fear, bravery, cowardice, desertion, POW and escape. The tremedous cost of wars, necessary or not, has caused the weakening of great powers —— Russia in Afghanistan, the British Empire in WWII and is relevent today as one of the causes of our failing economy.

Montague was a steel-nerved, quietly brilliant counterespionage agent. Carmichael was Comarade Slazov's next assignment for killing. The shadowy Ilse loved a man who called himself Slater. One of the three would probably have to kill Ilse. Neither Slasov nor Ilse suspected that the three were one man.

A Dangerous Man is the Sequel to Legacy Of A Spy. Written in the early sixties. It is dedicated to those Contract Agents who perform much of the dirty work done on our behalf, trying with increasing difficulty to maintain their initial belief in Intelligence as our nation’s first line of Defense, constantly aware they operate essentially alone without protection or recognition.

Another Spring is the story of life in a small NH resort town in 1950 just at the first signs of the Big Change. It is the story of Reed Hunter, a veteran of aerial combat in WW II, determined to write a novel depicting the truth about people and confirm his negative opinion.

Hunter’s discovery of the bloody corpse in an old cellar hole is sufficiently shocking, but it is the Sheriff’s lack of interest in finding the killer causes Hunter to explode publicly and accept that act as proof of his negative judgment of the Town.

And of course there were far too many distractions: the beautiful blonde wood nymph, Bea Lockwood, an English Instructor at Smith, afraid of the consequences of her gorgeous body; Stella Michaud, a saucy shacker who believed her body was the passport to security.

Newly elected President, Walter Whitredge (Ind), due to the assassination of Supreme Court Associate Justice Eliot Shapiro by persons unknown, has the opportunity to appoint his successor. In the firm belief that Law alone is not and cannot be a substitute for Justice and legal ethics are woefully inadequate, Whitredge appoints non lawyer Bradford Justice, a one term Senator determined to make real ethics a major role in the search for justice. Trickey Slye and Diddleone of Boston's more prosperous law firms. There are attempts by persons and organizations, never identified, to dissuade both the President and his appointee. Engaging, interesting appropriate subplots including appearances of Mafia characters Salvatore Frascati and Giuseppe Bondari. Humor, truth and suspense from the perspective of a non lawyer. First draft written 10 years ago which Maxfield sees no reason to update.
