CAPPADOCIA 60 million years ago in the tertiary geologial period
the taurus chain of mountains were sectionically pushed forth. As the Anatolian Plateau in
the north was squeezed, volcanic activity increased. Volcanoes emerged everywhere, hasan
dag (mountain) and the lesser gollu dag, in between them, started to erupt. The fallout of
this activity covered the land.
GOREME
Göreme valley is impressive not only the landscape, with its rockhewn churches dispersed
in the open air museum areas are various churches, refectories storage rooms and grave
rooms. It is possible to trace the evolution of the regional church architecture,
beginning with 7th century extending well in to the 12th century. The ferscoes on the
walls of the churches are quite remarkable.
ZELVE
The old village consisted of rockhewn houses on both slops of the valley in the population
exchange of 1924. The Anatolian ethnic greeks living here were deported to mainland Greece
and Turks from mainland Greece were settled there in 1952. The village was completely
evacuated and took on its present barren state. There are 15 churches here.
AVANOS
Avanos on the banks of River Kizilirmak is greenest of all settlements in the region.This
town is famous with its terracotta vases, jugs and vases.
CARAVANSARAI
Cappadocia was also on the silk road routes. On this ancient worlds travel route, security
and resting of the camel Caravans was made possible trough the use of CARAVANSARAI.
UNDERGROUND CITIES
There are two underground cities in Cappadocia, that are open to the public. These are
KAYMAKLI and DERINKUYU. These were used as early as the Hittites. In digging of the
underground cities, the Hittites hid here from the Phyrgians. The early chiristian also
took shelter here against state persecution. At KAYMAKLI you can climb down to the 4th
floor and DERINKUYU to the 8th floor.
BURSA Bursa was one of the first cappital of Ottomans. With mosques, madases
and old houses, it is home to many works of art of the Ottoman civilization. Bursa
panaroma is best enjoyed from yeşil district.
Thermals in BURSA
For centuries Bursa was well known for it's thermal. Thermal resorts are reported to be
good for rheumatism kind ailments, gall bladder dysfunction and some gynaecological
disorders. Almost all the better hotels have thermal baths, heated pools, and physical
fitness and treatment units.
ULUDAG
The first and, until recently, the only winter sports and recreational center in Turkey.
The zone used for recreational purposes lies at 2000 m altitude above sea level.
BERGAMA
PERGAMON
It was once the capital of Hellenic Kingdom of PERGAMON. Still richly bearing the artistic
and historical vestiges of that time. PERGAMON for over 150 years maintined its
characteristic of being one of the brightest cultural centers of the hellenic period.
ASCLEPION
ASCLEPION once a very big health center. (The god of Asclepion) Unfortunatly still god
kybele is in a museum in Germany. We are looking forward to seeing that in its original
place in PERGAMON.
PAMUKKALE
PAMUKKALE with its travertine terrace-basins, are snow-white resembling a mountain of
cotton balls. PAMUKKALE is not only popular because of this rarely seen charcteristic. It
is also known, since ancient times, as a place which possesses healing water. People are
over-exploiting the water which comes from the unique travertines and which is said to
have healing powers. PAMUKKALE is also a rich historic site.
EPHESUS The first foundations of the town are estimated to have been laid
around the 10th century B.C. It conveys a magnificent history of civilizations spanning
3000 years. The town maitained its significance during the christian period as well. It is
known that St. Paul came to EPHESUS, St. John died and was buried there at the beginning
of the 2nd century A.D. and the Virgin Mary lived and died in this place.
ANTALYA ANTALYA is one of the biggest cities if the Mediterranean Caost. Not
only can you enjoy swimming but you can also enjoy the ancient ruins here.
ASPENDOS
In 468 B.C., the final battles of the long wars between the Persians and the Greeks were
fought here. Resuling from a crushing defeat for the great King of Persia, he finally
abandoned his attempts to subdue the Greek world. In a single day, the boldness of the
Athenian Admiral Cimon won two victories at once on land and at sea. Both the Persian
Fleet and their Army were concentrated at ASPENDOS for another assault on the Aegean.
ASPENDOS has the best preserved Roman Theater anywhere in the Mediterranean.
SIDE
SIDE must be considered the first amongst the Pamphylian's ruins. Cyme, the Ionian city
near Smyra founded SIDE as a colony in the 7th century B.C. SIDE remained very much a part
of native Anatolians.
AEGEAN COAST RUINS DIDYMA
DIDYMA, south of MILETUS and its territory, is a temple and not a city. DIDYMA was a holy
site before the Ionians arrived.
MILETUS
MILETUS, first among the Greek cities until the rise of Athens in the 4th century B.C.
MILETUS'S greatest treasure was the human mind. The Milesians were the first to look at
the world froma detached, universal viewpoint. Thales, foremost among the seven sages, and
the first philosopher, suggested the water was the orgin of all life.
