Escape
w/c & acrylic
18" x 24"
$1500
Any woman who has managed to survive and escape an abusive relationship should be able to relate to this painting. The symbols within tell of the emotions and experiences of the survivor.
At first there is sheer terror, the off-balance sensation of flying without a safety net. Her years of being controlled and isolated have left her with almost no support system, and no self-esteem. Society, family, and/or culture (not understanding), often hinder her recovery. She MUST be her own best friend, if she is to survive. Many do not.
EVERY DAY FOUR WOMEN IN THE U.S. DIE AS A RESULT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
APPROXIMATELY 1,400 DIE PER YEAR ACCORDING TO F.B.I. RECORDS.
THE NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN MURDERED BY AN INTIMATE PARTNER IS GREATER THAN THE NUMBER OF SOLDIERS KILLED IN THE VIETNAM WAR.
OTHER STUDIES FIND A RATE AS HIGH AS 5,000 A YEAR (WORLDWIDE?)
