I shuffle the deck before and after the reading. Many books suggest that this is not nessesary, however I have found that shuffling before a reading with the client present, is very helpful in focussing my energy on their concerns. Here is a guide of some steps to take with a reading: 1. Establish what the person wants to know. This will tell you what spread you need to use. If they want a 6 month reading then naturally, the spread that you use will be different to that for a dream interpretation reading. For people that aren't sure and just want a general reading, I suggest using the Master Spread that I have listed on my spreads page. Shuffle the deck well, and make sure that the person shuffles the deck well also. Often, the person won't shuffle the deck as well as it needs, and you are more than welcome to tell the person to keep shuffling more so, until they are comfortable that they have shuffled the deck well enough. Remember that it is also when you feel the deck has been shuffed well enough, not just the person shuffling. 2. Read the cards as they appear. Remember to be open to their thoughts and make sure that you ask them as you go if there is any questions that they have. 3. When you have finished, make sure you ask if there is anything else that they would like to know. It is important that they don't feel as though you are rushing them out the door and that they have your attention. Most people have a few things that they want to know from the deck, so it is good that once you have looked at their main concern, that you move on to others that they may have. 4. At this stage, I will do some Yes or No spreads, depending on what the person wanted to know. Once the large spread has been done, you may do other spreads for the person. However I suggest that you stick with the smaller spreads, as most of the important information will have come up in the first spread. Sometimes, I will do another large spread if the topic that is being asked is totally different to what I have just read. Another way to look at it, is to divide the structure into spreads, for instance: 1. Dream Interpretation Spread 2. Celtic Cross 3. Yes/No spread Again, this is just a rough guide as it always depends on the person that you are reading for, but generally speaking, move from the larger spread onto the smaller ones. Often you will get similar information in the smaller ones as you did in the larger ones. I see this as a reinforcement of the original information and I am sure to restate what I have said previous and let the person know this. Sometimes, the Tarot won't give information clearly even though it has been asked specifically. That's fine. Read what you can, and be sure to let the person know what is unclear to you. The Tarot won't always respond to every question. The most important thing when reading for other people is to be honest. If you don't see something there, don't say that it is and vice versa. This pressure can often make a good reading inaccurate. Stick to what you see in the cards, and if the person wants to know more, then do a smaller spread to make sure. Again, the most important thing on your part is to be accurate. The cards won't always tell the person what they need or want to know, but if you tell them the truth with what you see, you have done a good job as a reader.
