The first witches book was "Equal Rites", the third Discworld book. Although actually, Nanny Ogg and Magrat were nowhere to be seen in ER and instead the story centred around Grany Weatherwax and her granddaughter Esk., the disc's first female wizard. A couple of years later MacBeth parody "Wyrd Sisters" was released and the trio was united for the first time.
The three witches have three very succinctly different prsonalities. Nanny Ogg is the jolly fat old woman type. Magrat Garlick is the new age hippy(slightly confused) type willing to try out questionable methods of witchcraft - questionable that is, to Granny Weatherwax, who is most definately the conservative old(And very strong willed) woman type. Granny, the leader of the group, is a firm believer believer in headology(The practice of fooling people in to thinking something has happened). Magrat's "questionable" methods, on the other hand, are (largely) based around the idea of actual magic.
The witches books might on the whole be my favourites and then again they might not(It's hard to decide). But they definately are very enjoyable and funny, probably because of the completely contrasting characters. Although thatmay sound a bit unoriginal it really does work here
