Trafalgar Square - Football fans

On Saturday June 15th 2002 England sailed through to the World Cup Final quarter finals after beating Denmark 3 - 0. While the match was played only a few tourists fed pigeons in Trafalgar Square and a lone man had set his loud speakers to preach about God.

Within 5 minutes of the game finishing fans hoarded into Trafalgar Square from TV's set up in pubs to celebrate the victory by climing onto the base of Nelson's column. The preacher had run to load his equipment into his van before it was trampled by the drunken excitement that disturbed the peaceful and unusual still and quiet city of London.

After 10 minutes fans had doubled, and kept doubling, in number and the atmosphere was incredible and extremely contagious. People from all nations were chanting and singing the words 'England' as loud as they could.

The water was turned off in the fountains as fans danced around the tops to stop them being injured in the frolicks. These pictures were taken just as the water subsided. The first was taken using a pencam, the second with a digital camera, hence one poor quality and the other good.

This dog cooled off with a swim in the fountain. Perhaps that wasn't all he wanted - he is carrying an empty can of lager that he found. I think he needed a drink too.

...

Trafalgar Square In the daytime seems a long way from the first picture I took when 'Lynda's London' first began on the morning of April 22nd 2002.

More pictures coming soon...
