Formerly an estate that produced cocoa, coffee and other fruit and vegetable crop for export, all that remains of this past is the old cocoa house (now refurbished) where cocoa was laid out to dry and workers danced the 'cocoa dance' to separate the pulp from the seeds. The estate was then abandoned for many years giving nature the opportunity to reclaim previously harvested and cleared areas and over-run the site. Today nature and man co-exist at Alta Vista in a way that is beneficial to both. The resort has its own herb and vegetable gardens and fruit orchards supplying fresh food for birds, animals and guests alike. |
Guests can also enjoy an out-door splash in a small natural pool fed by water from the mountains and leisurely nature walks along trails that often lead to discoveries of wild orchids and other exotic plants and fruit. There are also more challenging hikes with experienced guides who can explain the medicinal purpose of many of the tree barks and plants passed along the route. One of these walks ends at the 40 foot La Laja waterfall and caverns. |
Alta Vista also plays host to local and overseas day visitors who come to use one of the thatched picnic huts for bar-b-queing or to take part in Tai Chi and Qi Gong, to have a massage or other alternative therapies or to participate in art or personal development workshops, which are sometimes held at the resort. Away from the hustle and bustle of Trinidad's Capital - Port of Spain - and other busy towns, Alta Vista is the perfect location for "getting away from it all" and experiencing nature in a hospitable rain-forest environment.
