The Killiney Area

The Souter Family, Killiney, Co Dublin / souterfamily@eircom.net / May 2002

These photos are not my own, but are some that I came across while looking at other sites on Killiney. I have included them because they are a good illustration of the world that we inhabit.
Enya's Castle

As a village, Killiney is tiny. This is where we often walk to on Sunday to buy newspapers and an ice-cream for Ryan. The roads are pretty, but very narrow. It is hard to believe that traffic travels on them in both directions. Many roads are bordered by walls made of local stone. This can make them appear even more narrow and quite a scary experience as a pedestrian.

On the way to the shops we pass Enya's home. She is in the process of making her property more secure so one day it will not be possible to see the castle from the road.

An aerial view of Killiney Hill gives a good idea of the surrounding countryside. It should just be possible to make out the monument shaped like an obelisk on the top of the hill.

From Killiney Hill it is possible to see Dalky Quarry. There are also panoramic views of the whole Dublin area. I will have to look for some additional photos to give a better impression of 'the view from the top'.

One of our favourite spots on the beach is a place called 'White Rocks'. It is a different experience every time we go there due to the changing tides. It is a wonderful place for Ryan to play. The waves are never very big so he can splash around to his heart's content. The rocks are great fun for him to climb among and 'find things' and there is still enough sand to make castles. Its a great spot for Mom and Dad to find a sunny spot and let the world go by. In nice weather there are yachts to watch and the odd brave paddle-surfer.

I was really amazed to come across this last photo. I have been drooling over this piece of land for ages. It is clearly someone's garden, but is not obviously attached to any house. I would love to be able to buy it and build a house there - what a view. (The only down side would be that there is no access from the road and we would never be able to have a car!)

Although not definitive and maybe not all the obvious view spots, these pictures are so typical of the world we inhabit that I just had to include them!
