Great Georges Street

Great Georges Street

This is the building where I work in Great Georges Street. The entrance to my office is just on the left of the black arch in the centre of the building. The archway is the entrance to a fascinating indoor market. It has a very eastern atmosphere and reminds me a bit of the original Durban market from long ago.

St Patrick's Cathedral

I have'nt been inside the cathedral yet, but have spent quite a lot of time at the park. The cathedral charges an admission fee and during my luntime outings I usually don't take any money with me. The park is lovely and interesting as it is the site where St Patrick baptised the first Christians in the 5th century. (Today it is not known exactly where the well was.) The park also contains tributes to the famous names of Irish literature.

Dublin Castle is one of the most interesting places I have been to so far. The official tour is well worth it and the only place we have been to where you are able to use a camcorder and take photographs inside. I was lucky enough to have my camera with me while the sand sculpture included was in progress. The guys who make these are excellent and had photos of some of their other works on display as well. I went back a week later hoping to see it completed and found a bulldozer breaking it up and taking the sand away!

Street Art

Walking through the grounds of Trinity College to and from the station is my twice daily treat. It makes me wish that I was either an eternal student or better still an eccentric professor engaged on some lengthy research. The photo of the street art has nothing to do with the college and was taken somewhere else. Again I took advantage of the fact I had my camera with me. A group of school children were almost finished creating their art work with coloured shells and I thought it was very striking.

Iveagh Gardens

I took the photos at St Stephen's Green on a Saturday I was working when park was not as crowded as usual. In summer there are free lunctime concerts at the park. People sit on the grass around the bandstand and it is a nice way to spend an hour. My favourites were a 20's jazz style band - it felt like we were somewhere in the American south. Iveagh Gardens is by far my favourite. It has been called the 'Hidden Garden' or the 'Secret Garden' as it is less well known and not easy to find. Even with a map it took me a couple of attempts to figure out how to get into the park. Like Stephen's Green it was also laid out in Victorian times (1863) but somehow it has managed to stay locked in a time warp and it really feels as though you have stepped into the past.
