ABOUT THE DAY CARE

Lil' Bluebird Day Care is a licensed Day Care home in the state of Kansas. I am allowed 10 children maximum, depending on their ages. Currently, I have 15 children enrolled and of course they all are not here at the same time. I do full time and part time care, so some of those 15 are part timers who share spots. Most of my spots are filled with children from 6 weeks through 6 years. However, I do have some that come before and after elementary school. A school bus stops here every morning to pick children up and take them to school. Due to the high cost of insurance and lack of space in my vehicle, I do not do any transportation. If children need transportation home from Kindergarten or to preschool, their parents usually line up another parent to do that transportation for them.

Most of our time is spent in the basement of our home. It has been approved by the state fire marshall's office and has 2 exits. One is via the stairs to the main level of our home and one is an escape window that goes directly out into our yard. The children and I do monthly fire drills using both exits. We also do tornado drills during the spring and summer months. We eat lunch and do messy projects on the main level in the kitchen. Naps are taken down stairs. Children under 18 months sleep in play pens and older children sleep on approved mats with their own sheets, pillows and blankets. Children are not forced to sleep, but must remain on their mats and have a quiet time.

We enjoy lots of outside time. I am trying to make our outdoor play area as natural as possible. We have a large mound of dirt to dig in, rocks for climbing and riding toys. I have also made an outdoor musical area that includes chimes and a drum. We also have the more traditional toys as well including a swingset and jungle gym. Our yard is not fenced as I feel the children need that open space feeling. They all know the boundries and are never outside without an adult present.
