Who Knew What A Little Time Could Change

Chapter Seven

A True Friend?

“Nick!” Anne yelled as she drove up her driveway and got out of her car. “You were just here two weekends ago!”

“Fine then! I’ll just leave.” Nick exclaimed as a confused look crowded his eyes.

“No baby! Don’t leave me. It was just yet another surprise. Just trying to figure out why you came.”

“Is there any harm with me trying to find extra time to spend with my girl?” Nick explained pulling me in his arms.

“No, there isn’t.” I smiled.

“Have you behaved lately?”

I stopped for a few seconds. It was strange for Nick to ask that. Then I remembered the last time he was over. “No, I’ve been terrible. I’m ashamed of myself.” I pouted looking at the ground.

“Do I have to punish you?” He threatened.

“No anything but that!” I yelled. But he didn’t listen to my protest. I relaxed into his strong arms as he punished me good.

A sudden car motor sounded. I yanked away. “Oh gosh!” I mumbled leaning against Nick.

“Who is it this time?” Nick moaned kissing my hair.

“It’s Laura. She’s spending the night.”

“Can’t you send her away or something?” Nick begged.

“Sorry, can’t I don’t have security to just kick anybody out!” I teased pulling out of his arms.

“Nick!” Laura screamed as she ran up to him throwing her arms around his neck.

“Hey...”Nick trailed off saying in return. He looked startled by her greeting.

“So how is everything going?” She inquired linking arms with him and started to walk to the front door.

“Anne!” Nick called over his should. “Come here!”

I walked up to him and felt his fingers link with mine. Quickly I pulled out my keys to unlock the door. He looked over at me as Laura still kept on talking. I could tell he was aggravated that we wouldn’t have the night to ourselves.

“So, what are we doing tonight?” Laura asked a little while later.

“Watch a movie.” Nick suggested.

“Good idea!” Laura agreed. I glared at the back of her head. Her behavior was starting to annoy me.

“Does “Center Stage” sound okay? You told me you hadn’t seen that movie. Right Nick?”

“That’s right.” He smiled at me and I could see his eyes sparkle. They always did when he looked at me. I bit my lower lip with a smile creeping up my lips.

I returned quickly with the movie. As I was looking towards Nick to see where he was sitting, I noticed he was between Laura and the side of the couch. His eyes showed he was trying to be patient, but was about to lose control.

“Oh Nick! You’ll love this movie! It’s great! Trust me!” Laura exclaimed.

“I’m going to pop some popcorn.” I loudly announced eyeing Nick.

“I’ll come.” He joined in.

“So will...” Laura started.

“Stay here, keep my seat warm.” Nick lied.

As the popcorn popped Nick reached over to pull me in his arms. I wouldn’t look up at him. His hand gently pulled my face up to look at him.

“Don’t ruin this short solitary moment.” he whispered leaning down towards me. He kissed me one long kiss. I held my arms around his neck as he kissed me again and again.

The beep from the microwave signaled for us to stop. Nick decided we had a minute or two longer.

“Come on!” Laura yelled from in the living room.

“Sorry.” Nick whispered as he realized one hand was up the back of my shirt and the other was in my jean butt pocket. I smiled at his embarrassment. He looked so cute.

“We’re coming!” I yelled.

“Finally,”Laura replied. Slowly I let my breath out to keep from bitting her head off.

We walked in the living room with a huge bowl of popcorn. Nick set it down on the coffee table as he sat down in a nearby chair. I started to walk over towards the couch, but he grabbed my hand and pulled me on his lap.

Laura’s face showed full protest to his actions. Nick didn’t even take notice. AS we watched the movie, nothing happened because we were all so interested in it. Although I could feel Laura glance over at us all the time.

“I’m going to get a coke, okay?” I whispered to Nick, placing a short kiss on his lips.

Nick watched as Anne got up and walked towards the kitchen.

“Nick!” Laura whispered walking over towards him. “Ya know, you don’t need Anne. I could make a better girlfriend then she ever could.

Nick gulped as Laura leaned over him. “But Anne is more then just my girlfriend.” He explained glancing around the room. In hope that escape might present itself.

“That doesn’t matter.” Laura mumbled as she leaned in to kiss Nick.

<><><>

“Laura!” I yelled as I entered the living room greeted by a not very pleasant sight. “What do you think you are doing? Get out!”

“What?” Laura questioned.

“Get out, or don’t touch my boyfriend again. I thought I could trust you around him, but I guess I was wrong.”

Laura looked stunned although her eyes showed that she knew what she was doing. “Do you really want me to go? Do you really mean it?” She inquired testing me. She was still standing in front of Nick.

I looked over at Nick and could tell he was still uneasy from what Laura had done. I lowered my head and didn’t reply to her question.

Nick slowly got to his feet. Before I knew it, he had grabbed my hand and led my upstairs.

“Nick, did anything happen?” I asked as he closed the door to my bedroom.

“She tried to kiss me right as you walked back in the room.” He explained trying to pull me in his arms.

“I can’t believe she would do that!” I yelled walking away towards my mirror I picked up my brush and yanked the bristles through my hair.

“ Sweety, calm down!” He pleaded turning me around. “It’s no big deal. She could never change my mind about you. Trust me!”

<><><>

Laura spent the night, although e didn’t talk very much. She left early in the morning so me and Nick could have a few hours together before Nick left. As I walked back inside, the phone rang. Nick rushed over and answered it. “Hello? Who is this?” he asked as his eyes sparkled like a child’s.

“Nick! Don’t be rude!” I laughed watching him.

“Oh here. Anne, it’s for you.” he mumbled almost dropping the phone on the ground.

“Hello? Hey Brian!” I sat down and talked to him for a few minutes. I sat perched on the arm of the couch. Nick hung up the phone for me when I finished.

“So any plans for the day?” He inquired.

I smiled as he walked towards me. He grabbed my arms and slung then around his neck. Soon he wrapped his arms around me. His hair fell in his eyes, so I pushed it away. He pulled me off the couch and placed a firm kiss on my lips. Slowly before I realized it, time wasted away and he kept kissing me. But after a little while, I pulled away.

“Okay, Nick! Clam down!” I laughed. He started to dig his fingers in my side. “Okay! What is it with you and tickling me?” I tried to squirm away but only succeeded in getting caught tighter in his grip. He laughed at my helplessness. All of a sudden the door banged open. I turned to see who had opened it. There stood my dad, who I hadn’t seen in months.

“Dad! Hey!” I smiled, still not moving out of Nick’s arms from the stun.

“Who is this person?” He asked. I could tell he was mad. “And how old is he?”

“This is Nick, my boyfriend.” I explained, hoping it would calm him down.

“How could you go out with someone so old? How old are you boy? Like, 27?”

“Daddy!” I yelled embarrassed and mad.

Nick straightened up and let his arms drop to his side, “No sir. I’m 20.”

“Anne, you gotta be more careful!” My dad grabbed my arm and led me into the kitchen. “You don’t know how a guy that age is going to act. All he wants is the wrong kinds of things. I’m....”

“Dad, just stop now! You don’t know him! Go in the living room. I’ll be right there to show you something.” I ordered as I ran upstairs. Quickly I found my Millennium CD and ran back downstairs.

“What are you doing, Anne?” My dad questioned.

“Nick, come here.” I ordered again. Slowly Nick did and I bid. “Look, he’s not who you thin he is!” I held up the CD case and pointed to the blonde.

“It can’t be!” Well, that doesn’t matter who he is! Even if he is Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys. He’s too old.”

“Dad, just hush. Mom knows and he’s leaving soon. Let us enjoy our time together.”

My Dad actually went up to his bedroom and started to unpack.

“Why is there almost always a grand adventure when I come to your house?” Nick questioned.

“I don’t know!” We walked into the kitchen and talked till he had to leave. But not before he gave me a goodbye kiss.

Chapter Eight

Travel

“Oh gosh! Thanks Mom!” I mumbled giving her a kiss on the cheek. She had been good enough to take me to the airport.

“Call me when you’re going to come home.”

“Yes ma’am! I’ll miss you. You and Dad have fun while I’m gone.”

“Don’t worry about anything.” She said as I walked down the plane ramp.

Quickly I found my seat and settled in for the trip. Traveling had never been my favorite thing, to do. I looked out the window as we finally took off. Soon I would be seeing Nick.

<><><>

“Brian!” I called as I saw him searching for me. “Where’s Nick?”

“Hey! He had to finish getting something ready for you’re week together. Come on, we gotta hurry.”

He gave me a quick hug and we hurried to go get my luggage. Before long we were in Brian’s car, driving towards Nick’s house.

“Are you excited?” Brian asked looking over at me.

“Yeah. And just a little nervous. It’s going to be weird staying alone with him for a week.” I explained.

“Don’t worry! It’ll be fine. I was nervous the first time me and Lieghanne stayed home alone.”

“Ya really think so?”

“Yes.” He assured. We soon arrived at Nick’s house. I stared at how nice it looked. Clean yard with a few flowers. It looked perfect. “Anne come on!” Brain called totting my luggage in. I followed him up the stairs to the guest bedroom.

“So this will be my room?” I questioned.

“Yeah, Nick is in the kitchen. Try and see if you can find it.”

“Okay.” I mumbled. Slowly I wandered down the stairs. I heard pots and pans being moved around. “Nick? Sweetie?” I called seeing if he’d answer.

“Anne? Baby!” Nick yelled as he came around the corner. “You’re here finally.”

“Yeah, I laughed pushing his hair away from his face. We had a few moments alone with a few kisses. Soon the door opened and three guys walked in.

<><><>

I paid for the many pictures I took while I stayed at Nick’s. It was a young teenage girl worker who was helping me. She leaned over and saw a picture Brian had taken of me and Nick kissing.

“Oh my gosh!” She whispered. Her eyes stared at my face.

“What?” I questioned.

“You know the Backstreet Boys?”

“Yeah, I just got back from Tampa yesterday.” I explained.

“That is awesome! Can I have your phone number and talk to you later?”

“Under one condition. You can’t tell anyone my number or about me.”

“Deal!”

I paid for my pictures and left to go home and work on my scrap book.

Chapter Nine

Why?

Weeks passed quickly. School was close to an end and hearing from Nick every day. Life couldn’t get much better then this. Before I knew it, Nick had told the press about me. I was no longer a secret. People looked at me different. Some with hate and the others with pure joy. But I learned to not let any of it bother me.

<><><>

Nick looked up as he heard a quiet knock on his door. “Who could it be?” He mumbled.

“Hi! I’m you new neighbor.” A tall brunette announced. Her smile lit up her beautiful face. She wore a tight tube top that she practically hung out of.

“Hey” Nick said. He couldn’t help but notice her looks. There really wasn’t a downside to them.

“You’re Nick Carter right?”

“Yeah,” Nick mumbled, not sure what else to say.

“If you’re busy right now, give me a call later. Try and get to know each other better.” She suggested slipping Nick her phone number.

Nick looked down at the small sheet of paper as she walked away. He wasn’t going to call her, not while he had a girlfriend. He was hoping that he always would have Anne.

The phone suddenly rand, startling him out of his thoughts. Slowly he picked it up and soon his ears were greeted by Anne’s cheerful voice.

“Hey Nick!”

“Hey sweetie.” Nick smiled.

“I had so much fun with you over spring break. I can’t wait to see you again.

“Yeah, it was fun.”

“Nick, are you okay? You don’t sound okay.” Anne questioned worried.

“I’m fine, trust me.” Nick lied.

“Don’t lie! Tell me whatever it is.” Anne pleaded.

“It’s nothing. I gotta run. I’ll talk to you later tonight, okay?”

“Okay, promise?”

“I promise with all my heart.” Nick assured. Although Anne could hear that something was wrong.

“I love you, Nick.”

“Love you too.”

<><><>

I hung up the phone as a tear slipped down my cheek. I could tell I was going to lose him. How soon was still the question. But why? Was there something going on in Tampa I didn’t know about?

Quickly I swiped away the tear and continued on with my afternoon. I don’t know why, but it did surprise me when Nick called that night. He had promised, his voice just didn’t sound the same.

Later that night my mom came in my room. She saw the tear on my cheek with it caught the tiny glint of light. “Sweet heart, what’s wrong?”

I rolled away from her sympathetic eyes. Slowly she encircled me in her loving arms. “Mom, I’m scared I’m going to lose him.” I whispered up to him.

She ran her finger through my hair as she talked to me. “Nick?”

I nodded my answer.

“You shouldn’t be.”

“Mom. He was totally different on the phone today. I could hear the distance in his voice.” I explained.

“Honey, I know you don’t want to hear this, but it’s the truth. If Nick is going to leave you, he isn’t good enough for you. I know you love him, but you only deserve the best. Nick might not be the best for you.”

“No! Mom he is!” I protested as my tears spilled down my cheeks.

“You probably think that now. But if thing don’t work, you’ll see what I’m saying.” She kissed me on the forehead then left my room.

<><><>

“Mom!” I yelled the next morning. When she left the night before, I called the airport and got tickets to Tampa, Florida.

“Yes, sweetie?”

“Will you drive me up to the airport?”

“Why?” She questioned, stunned by my request.

“I’m going to Tampa. See how things really are. I’ll be home Sunday afternoon.”

“Okay, please be careful. Don’t take any drastic action.”

“I’ll try not too.” She drove me to the airport and I soon boarded the plane with my one small bag.

My thoughts raced as I flew towards Tampa. Never could I believe that my mom let me go so quickly. I guess she knew how much this meant to me.

I got a cab to Nick’s house. I was lucky that the guard at the gate recognized me. Slowly, I walked up to Nick’s door and rang the door bell. What felt like hours, which was only minutes, Nick finally answered the door.

“Anne?” He questioned.

“Yeah, Nick. I came for the weekend. I hope that I don’t interrupt anything.” He just stared at me. “Nick! Are you okay?”

“Yeah...just stunned.” He tried to explain. He leaned over and kissed me. We walked inside and I grabbed a coke. Soon I joined him on the couch. He slipped his arms around me, but still felt distant.

Nick stayed silent as we watched TV. I could tell he was thing about something, so I decided to try and find out. “Nick, whatcha thinking about?” I turned to face him.

“I’m not quite sure. Even I’m trying to figure that one out.”

“Well, think of something else.” I whispered kissing him. I finally felt all the tension and distance melt away as he deepened the kiss. We kept kissing for who knows how long, till the phone rang.

Slowly Nick pulled away to answer it. I listened to him talk to Brian, I could tell that it was him. Brian and I had become really good friends over time. We always talked on the phone. His girlfriend, Lieghanne was a sweet heart. But mine and Brian’s friendship was kind of weird, with the huge age difference. Luckily it never stood out.

“Here, Brian wants to talk to you.” Nick said handing me the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hey Anne! Why didn’t you tell me you were coming down?” Brian demanded to know.

“Sorry! I didn’t even know till last night.” We both laughed and chatted for a few minutes. Soon Lieghanne was wanting Brian to get off the phone.

“It’s getting late, ya ready to go onto bed?” Nick asked.

“Sure. See ya in the morning.” I smiled, starting to walk off towards the guest bedroom.

“No, just share a bed with me. It’s big enough.” I eyed Nick, he knew what I wouldn’t do.

“I guess so.” We both went our separate ways to get ready for bed.

“Anne, go ahead and turn the lights off. I’m not going to read or anything.” Nick called. I flipped the lights off and walked over to the bed. He grabbed my hand and I slide under the covers with him. He wrapped his arms around me and held me close. We shared a few kisses and soon fell fast asleep.

<><><>

I woke up the next morning, still in Nick’s arms, to the sun shining in the window. “I gotta go take a shower.” I whispered to Nick.

“Okay,” he smiled as he kissed me. “See ya in a few.”

<><><>

“Nick, where are you?” His neighbor Tiffanie called as she walked through his house. She heard the shower, so she walked into his room to wait. She was startled when she saw him asleep on his bed. A smile crept up her lips. Slowly she walked over to his bed and sat on the edge. She traced his face with her fingers.

Nick thought it was Anne and didn’t object, and didn’t even bother to open his eyes. He felt who he thought was Anne, kiss him.

“Nick? What are you doing?” Anne screamed. No one had noticed the shower turn off. It only took a minutes for her to get ready.

<><><>

“Anne! I thought..wait!” Nick mumbled extremely confused. Tiffanie glanced at me with hate in her eyes.

“What are you doing here little girl. Aren’t you too young to be playing with the big boys?” She sneered.

“Who is she?” I demanded to know.

“She’s my new neighbor, but nothing like this has....”

“I don’t care! It has now!” I glanced at her. She looked lick such a slut. Even her eyes showed it.

“Anne! Please! Don’t do this to me!” Nick pleaded.

“I’ve done nothing to you! You’ve done something to me! I don’t know how long this has, or will go on Nick!” Tears started to build up in my eyes.

“You two are together?” Tiffanie asked. Nick nodded. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

That was the last straw I could take. “That’s it Nick! We’re through...unless you...I don’t know!” I cried turning my back to the,

“Anne! Please! No, I’m sorry. Don’t leave me.” Nick still pleaded. He climbed out of his bed and tried to pull me in his arms.

“Don’t, you’ve hurt me enough!” I put a finger to his lips and started to walk away. He grabbed my hand and wouldn’t let go.

“I’m not going to let you go. Not this easy, and when you do leave. I won’t let you go for long!” Nick told me. I could hear the complete determination in his voice.

“I thought I could trust you! You proved me wrong! Now you expect me to just let it go? It didn’t happen! It hasn’t or won’t happen again! No! It will if she’s your neighbor. You’ve lost my trust. That’s, that.”

“Anne, I thought it was you!” Nick explained. A ray of happiness lifted my heart. But I wouldn’t let it change my mind, His fingers dug in my side. I hadn’t realized he had me in his arms.

“Just let me go!” I pleaded collapsing against his bare chest, sobbing.”

“No! Not until you change your mind! We’re right together. Me and you like this, right now, with you in my arms!”

I almost opened my mouth to agree. I knew we were, but I just didn’t want to be one of his girls. I wanted and had to be his only one. “No, Nick.” I sighed looking him dead in the eyes. “Listen to me and listen good. We’re through right now. Give me time on my own while I deiced where I stand and you decide who you’re going to choose. Me or her.” I finished and pointed at the girl who had torn us apart.

“Anne! I already know my choice! It’s.....”

“I don’t want to hear right now.” Before I could stop him. Nick leaned down and kissed me hard. As we called in my punishment. My heart wanted so bad for this not to stop, but my obstinate mind wouldn’t let me stay. “No!” I sobbed. Quickly before Nick could say anything, I left his room. As soon as I got in the guest bedroom, I used my cell phone to call Lieghanne and asked her to come and get me.

Soon the door bell rang and Nick beat me to answering it. “Lieghanne! What are you doing here?”

“I came to get Anne.” She explained, unsure of why Nick didn’t know. She could tell something must be wrong between us.

“I’m ready Liegh, let’s go!” I called pushing my way past Nick. “I hope I’m not putting you through any trouble.”

“No! Don’t worry about it! Brian will be happy to see you.” She smiled.

“Yeah,” I sighed, trying to look cheerful.

“Anything wrong?” she questioned. “Thing’s seemed kind of icy between you and Nick.”

“I’ll tell you when we get to your’s and Brian’s house. Okay?”

“Sure thing.”

No other words were exchanged. I was wanting to cry my eyes out, but was somehow able to keep them all in check. That was till, Brian hugged me.

“Anne! What is it?” He asked holding me close. Lighanne could tell this was a time that I needed Brian’s brotherly love, so she left to give us the space.

“Nick...he...well...cheated on me.”

“Anne...no. You must have heard wrong.” Brian exclaimed pulling me back in his arms.

“I’m sure Brian. I saw it with my own eyes.”

For the first time, Brian finally realized how upset I was over all this and how much I truly loved Nick.

“I’m so sorry!” he sodded. I couldn’t believe he was crying with me. It wasn’t his loss or heartache.

“Brian! What am I going to do without him?” I love him so much. I know he wants me back, but I don’t know if I’m up to maybe being hurt again. I might not be able to handle it!”

“Anne. This will work out! I know it will! The love that surrounds you and Nick is just so awesome. I can see it in both of your eyes, so strong that you hate to see the other leave. That kind of love doesn’t just disappear, it can’t! Trust me, I’ve never seen Nick happier then when he’s with you. Never through the entire time I’ve known him.” Brian explained as he wiped the tear off my cheek.

“Really?” I asked amazed.

“Really. Just don’t shut him out. I know it hurts, but you need each other the most right now. I’d hate to have to put up with a broken hearted band member.”

I smiled at Brian’s joke. He always knew what to say. I know why he became my best friend, he truly loved me, because I made Nick happy. Then he grew to love my for myself. “Thanks Brian! You’re the best.” I tried to smile again, but my tears got the better of me and spilled down my cheeks. I felt Brian pull my close and just let my cry. He knew it was the best thing for me.

<><><>

Nick sat on his couch, with TV going but he didn’t understand anything that was going on. He didn’t care either. He had just lost the most important thing in his life. Tears slowly fell down his cheeks, but soon stopped when he heard Tiffanie’s footsteps on the stairs.

“So, Nick.” She sighed.

No answer.

“Aren’t you happy to be single again? You didn’t need that little girl, you need someone who will give you what a real man wants.”

Nick still didn’t answer. Anne gave him everything he wanted and more. He didn’t need the physical pleasure to have a wonderful relationship with her. She had a loving heart that loved him completely in return. That was all he needed.

“No, I had what I needed, all I wanted. But you ruined it! It was perfect, so perfect! Get out of my house and never ever come back! I mean it! You killed me, more then you might realize!” Nick choked out. As soon as he heard the door close behind Tiffanie, he gave into his tears. Laying with his head buried in the pillows on the couch, he sobbed and cried his hear out. Never had he experienced heart break as painful as this. Never had he loved someone so much, he wouldn’t ever love another girl. He knew his heart belonged to Anne and only Anne. If she wouldn’t take him back, he wouldn’t know what to do.

Nick sat up later and felt his cheeks still wet from crying. He still wanted to cry, but there were no more tears left to cry

Memories raced through his head. Her lips on his, feeling her body against his, holding her all through the night. The previous night! “It was only last night she had been mine. I held her and let her slip through my fingers. She won’t be gone long. I won’t let her. I chose her and I always will. No one can ever take her place.” Nick stated to the thin air. “How in the world am I going to sleep tonight?!”

<><><>

After a good cry, I pulled out of Brian’s arms. I started to laugh when I felt how wet his shoulder was.

“It’s no problem.” he said shrugging his shoulders. “ Do you feel any better?”

“Just a little.” I sighed. “Why did this have to happen when everything was going so perfect? We were so happy!”

“I don’t know. Maybe this is a test to prove how strong you love is. If it all works out things may change for the better. Jut give everything time. Don’t try and shut Nick out when he talks to you. Don’t get mad. It will work again.” Brian assured me giving me one more hug.

“Thanks Bri. Love ya bro!”

“Love ya too sis!” We both smiled as he left me in the den with my thoughts.

Why did this happen?” I mumbled. Memories flashed in my mind, his arms held me so close as he kissed my goodnight. I could still remember every second I was with him. Every kiss, word, touch. None of this I would forget.

“No!” I screamed without realizing it. “I’m not going to let myself get hurt again. I’m not going to give in to what my heart wants! That always leads me to pain. Nick won’t get me back. I need someone else, my age, at home and not so famous!” Without warning tears filled my eyes again. “No matter what I say, I know I love him and always will!”

Slowly I walked over to a desk against the wall. A sheet of paper and a pen were lying on it as if they had just been used. A few notes were scribbled down. I could tell it was Brian’s handwriting. I smiled at how happy he seemed. As I scanned down the words of one sentence stood out.

“We’re finally engaged!” I could almost see Brian’s joy from his writing.

“Why didn’t he tell me?” I wondered. “Oh, yeah! That wouldn’t help me with how I feel now. I’ll just have to ask him about it later. I flipped the sheet of paper over and began to write. Every now and then, a tear would fall and blur up the ink. But it helped me release all the emotions I felt.

Getting Over You

No matter where I go
No matter what I do
The only think I seem
to think about is you.
I really thought we had something
You seemed to think so too.
But you chose her, not me
And now we’re though
What were you thinking?
All those times you led me on.
I hope you made the right choice
Don’t change it now,
because I’m gone
I guess I’ll never know
What we could have been
Now every time I think of you,
I close my eyes and count to ten.
Because if I didn’t
I might just break down and cry.
Just thinking of you make me miss you,
And I keep asking myself why.
It’s too bad I wasn’t god enough
At least not for you
Sometime though
You’ll have someone else
And they’ll break you heart in two.
