Til Death
Chapter One

Melody sat in her room, holding the phone in her hand. She needed to call her friend, Vallery, back. Should I tell her, Melody wondered. No, was the answer, Vallery wouldn't believe her. She dialed her number.

"Hello?" Vallery said cheerfully.

"Hey, what's up?" Melody asked, pretending everything was all right.

"Oh my gosh, Mel, you gotta do me a big favor! I know you will do it because you are one of my, no, you ARE my best friend in the whole world. Your nice, pretty, wonderful, did I mention NICE. And you know I would do the same thing for you…"

"Okay! Dude, you don't have to suck up to me. Just tell me what the big favor is."

"Well, I met this guy at the mall. He is really cute and is so sweet. He said he was going to dinner with his friends tonight and asked me to come along. The only thing is, two of his friends don't have dates. Now, that's where you come in."

"Vallery, you didn't?"

"Yes, I did. I told him about you and Suzy."

"Vallery!"

"Come on, Mel, please! Suzy said she would go, and I'll even let you choose what guy you want. One is 22 and the other is 26. Pretty please?"

Melody thought about it. She usually would have said no immediately, but things were different now. She didn't have long to live and she should try to enjoy the time she had left. I need to have some fun before I die, she thought.

"I get the 22 year old, Suzy always goes for the older guys anyway." Melody said finally, Vallery screamed and thanked her over and over. "So, does this wonderful guy have a name? You seem to like him a lot for just meeting him today," she said, walking over to her small desk.

"Nick Carter."

"Do you happen to know my dates name?"

"Nope, sorry Mel."

"You know how much I hate blind dates, right?"

"Yes I do, and that's why you are such a great friend. Let's just hope he isn't ugly, fat, or stupid. Well, I gotta go. Be at my house by 6:30 because Nick is picking us up at 7:00. Dress semi-nice and I will see you in a little while. Bye!"

"C-ya," Melody said, hanging up the phone, incredibly sad. It would be nice if I could spend some quality time with just my friends, but this will have to do for now, she thought. Melody had an hour before she had to leave, so she started getting ready. She picked out a pair of Khaki's, a yellow tank top, and a see-through, short-sleeved, yellow blouse. She brushed her hair and put on a little make-up. Melody looked in the mirror; she liked what she saw. Melody sat down at her desk, seeing she still had 15 minutes before she had to leave, and pulled out her journal. She began writing:

Dear Journal,

This is the first of my final entries. An angel came to me today, I know it sounds strange, but it happened. She told me I only had ten more days to live. It is because of my heart, I try not to talk about it, but I always secretly knew this day would come. I just didn't think it would come so soon. Because I was born with a weak heart, I have to die young. It's seems so unfair that I will never get to do the things that most people get to do. I will never get to go to collage, get a job, fall in love, get married, have children, or go to a highschool reunion. What if I didn't have to die so young? What would I be, what would I do? I can't help not thinking about everything I want from life. I want to grow up, fall in love, and one day, after I have lived a long, meaningful life, to peaceful die in my sleep while in the arms of that very special person. That is never going to happen, I will die young and alone. It's doesn't seem fair. As my father always says, life isn't always fair. I never knew until now how true that saying really is.

-Melody

A single tear dropped onto the journal page, smearing her name. Melody looked up at the clock it was, time to go. She put the journal back into the desk drawer and wiped her eyes. She looked at her parents in the living room, happily watching a movie together.

"I'm going out, I'll be back later," Melody said, simply, as she walked past them heading for the door. She paused, then walked back to her mom and dad. "I love you both so much," she said, hugging them. Her parents were shocked, Melody never hugged them. They told Melody they loved her too before she headed out the door. Melody walked to her car, a small, yellow, mustang. Ten minutes later she pulled up to Vallery's house and parked next to Suzy.

"Here goes nothing." She said out loud as she stepped out of the car.
