Til Death
Chapter Seven

Melody sat at her desk staring at the blank piece of paper in front of her. What am I going to write to him, she wondered? Tapping her green feather pen on the desk, she silently hummed the song she had heard on the radio. Having no other choice, she began to write.

Dear Aj, I'm sorry I couldn't meet you for lunch today. I promise I will make it up to you. If you are not busy, I would like to see you tomorrow night. Don't worry, I'm sure I should be well by then. Some incredibly sweet person sent me a gift that made me feel a whole lot better. Thank you.

-Melody

"Thank you for caring," she added out loud. Melody folded the note and slid it into the envelope. Now for the hard part, she thought. She picked up the phone and called Vallery.

"Talk to me," Vallery answered.

"Hey Val," Melody said quietly.

"Oh, so you got your voice back," Vallery said sarcastically. "What do you want me to do another favor to help break Aj's heart?"

"Vallery, don't be like that. You don't know what I was going to say."

"Sorry, okay, I'm listening."

"I need you to get Aj's address for me."

"Why?"

"I'm going to make everything right. I know what I have been like the past few days. I've been hurting a lot of the people I care about, who care about me. I'm realizing what I have been doing is wrong. I guess I need to apologize to you too. I'm sorry for being mean, and forcing you to do something you didn't want to. Friends?"

"Of course, girl. Can't you just tell me what has been up with you?"

"Soon, but not yet. Could you just get me Aj's address?"

"Yeah, I have it in my phone book, hold on." Vallery came back a few minutes later. After jotting down the address she thanked Vallery.

"I love you girl, don't go doing anything stupid. You here me Mel?"

"Yes Val, love you too. Buh-bye." Melody hung up the phone and jogged to the kitchen to get her keys. Melody drove to the street Aj lived on. Pulling the car to a stop at the end of the street, Melody got out to walk. She didn't want to risk Aj being home and seeing her car. She snuck up to the front door. After sliding the letter under the door, she silently crept to the window to peak in. Aj was sitting on the couch watching MTV. Melody stood, hidden from site, and stared at him. Her heart seemed to start racing as she continued to look. Maybe this was meant to be, she thought, maybe he is my gift before I have to die. She crept back to the front door. One…two…, she counted in her head, three, she pressed the doorbell and ran as fast as she could. After hiding behind a tree far from the house, she peaked back around at the door. Aj came out; he looked around, confused, then he noticed the letter. She watched him pick it up and read it. He smiled before heading back into the house.

"Okay, see Melody, that wasn't too hard," she whispered to herself. She strolled back to her car and pulled back onto the street. It was starting to get late, but not too late to give Suzy a visit. Ten minutes later, Melody was sitting in Suzy's living room, waiting for her to get out of the shower. Suzy's parents had let her in the house. Suddenly Suzy emerged from the bathroom.

"What are you doing here?" was the first thing out of Suzy's mouth.

"Is it that strange for me to visit my best friend?" Melody said, semi-laughing, semi-hurt.

"No, I guess not."

"Sit down Suzy. I want to apologize for the other night."

"Forget an apology, just tell me why you did that!"

"I really don't know. I was just in the car, and I decided I wanted to drive myself. I'm not sure what came over me. I think there is something I could tell you that might make you understand the way I have been acting a little bit. For now, I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Vallery, this is not the time for me to tell you. I promise, you both will find out soon. What I tell you won't make you feel any better, I'll warn you."

Suzy didn't answer; she just walked over and hugged her. Melody smiled, then got up to leave.

"Soon," she whispered, going out the door. Melody quickly drove home. After eating a quick dinner, she went to her room for the night. She sat on the bed holding the hat Aj had bought for her. After placing it on her dresser, she sat down at her desk, once again, to write in her journal.

Dear Journal, I have made a decision, and for once, I know it is the right one. I am going to make everything up to Aj. No more acting like I am going to die. I'm going to put that aside in my mind and pay attention to life instead of death. My last day is Saturday, May 9th. Today is the 2nd. I figure I am going to have to tell my family and friends sooner or later. I'm going to choose later, but I will tell them. I will gather everyone I care about here, at my house, this coming Thursday. This will give them a two-day warning. I believe that will be enough time before, but will leave them more worry free days. 7 days left as of tomorrow, time really does go by fast doesn't it? I really have a lot of work to do in the next week. I am going to write a note to people I care about, to be given to them after I am gone. There are also certain things I want to be given to certain people. I will have to work that out too. I don't know right now, I am just too tired. I'll have time to do it later. Goodnight.

-Melody

Melody yawned and stretched. Bed, soft, sweet bed, Melody thought as she curled up in her blanket. Seconds later, she was fast asleep. Her angel watched over her, smiling.

"Good-night, sweet child," the angel whispered.
