Interview from Smash Hits Nov 1998

Tricky, rude or just plain bizarre, this devious set of questions is Boyzone's toughest interrogation yet. After all, there are some questions that only your best mates can ask...

Aren't you going mad from the lack of a girlfriend?
Not at all. So I'm not getting married in the morning - that doesn't mean I'm frustrated. I've got too many people around me, too hectic a schedule. I never feel lonely - I'm too busy to be lonely.

Which married 'Zoner spends the most time on the phone to his better half?
Hmm, probably Ronan. I'm not gonna tell you exactly how much, but it's a lot! He Likes to make sure Yvonne's OK and see whether she needs anything. It's really nice, the way all of them spend time with their wives on the phone.

Do you think you ripped off your hardcore fans by releasing a new version of Where We Belong?
(Annoyed) Ripped off? We would never rip anyone off! We re-released the album with two extra tracks because there was a demand. Obviously people who bought it wanted to buy it. They could have waited for the next single. Love The Way You Love Me. There was definitely no plot to rip people off.

What makes you cry?
I cry sometimes when I get really stressed. I think it's very healthy under the right circumstances. I'm quite a soft person anyway and very sensitive, so it doesn't take a lot for me to cry, hahaha! But I'm sure everybody cries sometimes - I'm sure the rest of Boyzone cry!

Which of the others would you trust with a big secret?
I'd trust any of them - not that I have any dark secrets. They know everything about me and we trust each other equally. If one of us said, "I don't want this going any further," it wouldn't.

If Shane was a fish, what kind would he be?
Definitely a shark. That's not to say he's dangerous, but when we went to an aquarium in Bournemouth, Share was totally amazed by the sharks. Plus they're quite fast and well defensive.

Were you disappointed that Ronan didn't ask you to be his best man?
(Shakes his head.) Not at all. I was disappointed that I couldn't get to the wedding, but I was actually working. (Sincerely) Of course, he's one of my best friends so I was really hoping to be there, but he wanted to do it quickly and quietly, and I respect that.

Imagine the five of you are stuck in an old, abandoned farmhouse. Who wouldn't go upstairs on their own? Who would grab the only bed? And who'd get the fire going?
Well, the first one would probably be me, hahaha! We would all try to grab the bed. And Shane would start the fire - he's the gadget man!
