Cultural Awareness

On the weekend of May 23rd and 24th 1998, I had an amazing experience, I went with friends to sims creek near Squamish to be a witness of the beauty of the land and how it is changing.

It is extremely beautiful, being amongst this beauty was very intoxicating. Everything seemed so much more real and moved at such an easy pace compared to life in the city. I had such a great time being soothed by the forest, then we went on a hike and came to a place that had been clear cut, I immediately felt the sadness within my soul upon seeing the destruction and waist. After hiking into an other part of the forest, where the good soothing feeling returned, we were told that the part of the forest we were in now would not be there next year because it was scheduled to be clear cut before next year. I personally didn't understand the way I felt, but it was not good.

From then on I realized how important witnessing is. I went there to have a good time, but ended up being educated in reality.

The river we were camped at no longer has any fish in it because of the abuse of natures laws, we have many problems in Canada, but I think in solving our problems, we should take care of the long-standing problems first.

The Squamish Nation needs all our help to put right the wrongs that were and are being done. The Sailish people have been denied aboriginal title, in other words, this is like someone coming into your house and using it as if you were not even there, and changing everything to the way they wish it to be, if you complain, no one listens, soon your home is becoming messy and even dirty in places, these newcomers don't feel the same way you do about your home, so things get worse and worse until your home is ruined.

After seeing the beauty up there, I know we have not ruined the house yet, but are moving in that direction. You love your house or home more than anyone else can, so why not let the original owners run there own place with the love and respect that only they can.

I know we would all benefit. I don't see how we Canadians can claim to live in a multicultural country, it seems ironic to me that Canada is known throughout the world as being Super tolerant of other cultures, while ignoring the original owners of this land, the ABORIGINAL people.

This Canadian wants his government to make it right. We all need to let our government know we care, and wish to become a truly multicultural society, one we can all be proud of.
