Top Ten Movies of 1996

10. James and the Giant Peach

Excellent stop motion animation. That right there made the movie worth seeing. I loved the vignettes of scenes and stories, but I had problems understanding the movies as a whole. This is one movie I plan to buy and see again. Maybe then I'll understand what went on.

9. The Rock

This is I think the best action film of the year. Extremely violent but what I loved most about the movie was Nicholas Cage. He was great because his character was an everyday man. He was the super action hero that they tried to make Connery out to be. Interesting story, but I liked it only because of Cage.

8. Muppet Treasure Island

I love the Muppets. They're funny and adorable. My problem with it was that they tried too hard to be funny. It's basically their television humor, which to me is tolerable. Unlike the Muppet Christmas Carol, they really strayed from the basic plot and what make a Christmas Carol a great movie was Michael Caine playing the role of Scrooge straight. There was none of that here and it was a basic children's tale of Treasure Island with the Muppet Twist. Still worth seeing for Muppet fans.

7. Extreme Measures

Is it wrong to do medical tests on Human Beings, especially for diseases and conditions that can not be cured. That is what this movie is about. I liked this movie, because it makes you think and I'm all for that. Hugh Grant is not one of my favorite actors, but this movie had good action and a good plot. How far would you go?

6. Shine

This is a wonderful film. I only wish it won the Best Picture of the Year. It was definitely the underdog picture, because it was low budget. I like low budget. This was an incredibly inspiring film. A must for all to see and I've never been as interested in classical piano until now.

5. Rumble in the Bronx

If you like cheesy kung-fu movies, this is the movie for you. If you don't like cheesy kung-fu movies, this is still a great film for you. The plot is really stupid, but the fight scenes are ingenious. What would it be like to take on a gang of thugs using pinball machines and refrigerators? SEE THIS MOVIE. I especially like the work of the Lamp Operator.

4. Time to Kill

What would you do if your daughter was brutally raped? We know what Samuel L. Jackson's character would do-he'd kill the #*%!@#!. Great drama taking on the NAACP and the KKK. You really feel for the character and the struggle a young lawyer in the South must put up with. I don't agree with the conclusion that revenge is a justifiable act, but there is still so much to consider.

3. Big Night

I don't normally see limited release art house type films, but I was talked into seeing Big Night and I'm glad I did. I made the mistake of seeing this film without eating dinner. If you like food this is the movie to see. It's the story of two brothers trying to run a restaurant ahead of it's time. Good drama, good acting and good food.

2. Mystery Science Theater 3000, The Movie

The MST Gang lampoons the movie This Island Earth. The basic premise is a mad scientist is trying to take over the world and he wants to find the worst movie in the world to do it with. What makes MST3K so funny is the awful movie they make fun of. They chose the right movie because there were so many opportunities. My college group and I rented this movie three days in a row.

1. Hunchback of Notre Dame

Yes, a Disney movie tops my list once again. Hunchback is a great movie. It has a great story, great song and top notch animation. Many Christian groups have criticized this movie and that's a shame because most of the criticism is unfounded and taken in light of other perceived Disney anti-family practices. As a movie this is worth seeing.

Other Notable Movies

Emma

Emma was a cute film, but it was a Victorian rip-off of Clueless.

Kids in the Hall-Brain Candy

I laughed, I was disappointed, but hey that's the Kids in the Hall

Independence Day

Too much hype, surrounding this movie. Great special effect, really sappy story.

Ransom

Almost made my list. Only because the story didn't grip me or become as memorable as the other movies did. I still felt it was excellent.

Star Wars-Special Edition

This should have appeared on the list, but it's really not a new movie. That's the only reason it's not here. It's still well worth seeing.

Let me know what you think of my picks-right or wrong!!!
