Backstreet Boys:the European Album

by Po

The first five songs of the Boys' European album- We've Got It Goin' On, Anywhere For You, Get Down, INBYH, and QPG- also appear on their US debut, so you already know what I think of them. Let me digress for a moment. Those of us who live in the United States got seriously jacked where the BSB are concerned. First of all, they released 2 CDs over there and one here, so we have less BSB songs available to us. Then, instead of making their albums the same in all countries, they pulled songs off of both European CDs to make the US album. So if we want to hear all their songs, we have to buy BOTH imports and spend a lot more money. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya. Anyway, back to the CD. The next song is Boys Will Be Boys. Is it just me or does this sound like the theme song for rape? The lyrics are horrible and the music is wannabe New Kids. I really like Just To Be Close To You, especially Nick's solo in the second verse. I don't understand why they don't sing it acapella; the "music" in the background is just a synthesized drum beat. They harmonize well though and it's my favorite song on the CD. I Wanna Be With You and Every Time I Close My Eyes are both good songs as well. Darlin' is also on the US album :oP. Then comes Let's Have a Party. This has got to be one of the dorkiest songs ever. It's obvious Nick hasn't hit puberty yet and the music is just ugly. I don't like Roll With It either because it's a failed attempt to move away from their usual subject matter. I know it's supposed to be "inspirational" and I applaud the effort, but it just doesn't work for me. The last song on the CD is Nobody But You, which is an odd one to end the album with. I like the song solely because it gives Kevin a chance to sing! Even though he sounds slightly nasal, he does a good job and deserves more solos. However, the song is brief and very repetitive, which is why I don't particularly enjoy it. Now on to the superficial stuff: the album cover. AJ looks like a girl with his longer-than-normal hair, earrings, and obvious lipstick and he's an ugly girl at that. Howie hasn't entered his greasy stage, which is always a plus. His hands are on his belt buckle, though, and he vaguely resembles a monkey. Kevin looks the best. His hair isn't too long, yet. Brian is freakin' evil; he's very pale and he's staring directly into the camera. His hair is combed forward, which means he hasn't begun balding. Nick is a loner (he's not standing near the other guys), his hair needs to be redyed, and I think his lipstick is smudged. Plus these are Nick's anorexic years, or B.P. (before pizza). They look better on this cover than they do on the US one. Grade:B-
