Yo Quiero Backstreet: Ch. 7-9
"I can't believe you did that AJ," Erica gasped for air and struggled to catch her breath. AJ had been entertaining her over the phone with his most embarassing moments.
"If you think that's funny, you'll die when you.." AJ began, but was cut off by the sound indicating he was receiving another phone call. "Hold on Erica."
"Ok." She waited patiently. About five minutes later, AJ came back on the line.
"Guess what?!" he exclaimed.
"What?" she said excitedly.
"We're going to be doing a new music video!"
Erica was happy, but she didn't really understand what the big deal was.
"To what song?" she asked calmly.
" 'Get Down'," AJ replied. "But that's not the best part. We need background dancers and we're holding auditions tomorrow!"
"Oh my gosh!" Erica dropped the phone and ran into Sam's room to tell her the news. The sisters began screaming and jumping. Erica then realized she had left AJ hanging on the phone. She ran back into her room and scooped it off the floor.
"Sorry," she said. "I guess I got a little carried away."
AJ laughed on the other line. They continued to talk for a few minutes, then hung up. Sam called Claudia to tell her about hte chance to be in the music video. Claudia was estatic. The girls made plans to get together that afternoon and practice their dance moves. Sam also invited Christy and Amber, who had heard the news from Kevin.
Later that afternoon, the five girls collapsed in Claudia's backyard after dancing for two hours.
"I haven't done that in so long," Christy said, then took a bug gulp of ice water in an attempt to cool off.
"Me either," Amber added. She wiped sweat off her forehead. "I forgot how tiring it is."
"At least we'll be ready for tomorrow's audition," Sam pointed out.
"That's true," Claudia agreed. "I hope we make it. That would be so tight."
"Are the guys the ones that decided who's in it?" Erica wondered out loud.
"If it's them, we don't have anything to worry about," Christy assured her friends.
"Oh my gosh!" Amber sat up quickly. "I don't have anything to wear! Let's go shooping." Her cousin sighed. Leave it to Amber to turn everything into an excuse to go to the mall, Christy thought. But everyone agreed and the girls soon departed to the mall.
After a relatively quick shopping excursion, Christy and Amber returned home. Exhausted, both girls readied themselves for bed. Christy went right to sleep, but Amber was too excited about the audition to go to bed. Instead, she called Nick and asked him what to expect at the tryout. He answered her questions, but assured her she had no reason to worry.
"You'll make it, Amber," he said confidently. Although Nick's statement helped calm her down, she was still nervous. It was after 1:00 am before Amber finally fell asleep.
Amber felt as if she had just been sleeping for a few moments when Christy shook her awake the next morning. She pushed her cousin away and buried under the covers.
"Come on Amber," Christy said. "We have to get ready to try out for 'Get Down'." At the mention of the music video, Amber jumped out of bed and began to search for the new outfit she had bought yesterday. Both cousins dressed and fixed their hair in record time. A half an hour later, Christy and Amber were out the door and on their way to Sam's house to pick up her and Erica. After swinging by Claudia's, the girls pulled up in front of the huge wherehouse where the audition was held. They walked in and were surprised to see so many other girls waiting in line.
"These poor suckers don't have a chance," Amber whispered to Christy.
"Amber!" Christy stared in shock at her cousin. "You shouldn't be overconfident. We're not sure that we're going to make it either."
"Sorry," Amber shrugged her shoulders and grinned. Christy shook her head.
While in line, the girls practiced the dance rountines they had worked out the day before. After waiting for what seemed like forever, the five friends reached the front of the line. Erica, who was first, took a deep breath.
"Wish me luck," she said nervously. The others offered their encouragement and Erica walked in. A couple of minutes later, she emerged, wearing a big smile. Claudia went in next.
"What was it like?" Christy asked Erica. She explained the tryout to Christy, who went in after Claudia.
When she walked into the room, Christy found herself face to face with the guys, as well as their choreographer and a few unfamiliar people. She was so apprehensive that when they asked for her name, Christy blanked. She began to panic until she caught Kevin's eye. He smiled at her encouragingly.
"Christy," she blurted. "Christy Thomas." After that, she was able to relax and performed her rountine flawlessly. As she walked out, Kevin gave her a thumbs up. Sam and Amber both danced through their tryouts without incident. Now the girls had to go home and wait for a phone call that would tell the outcome of their audition.
The girls stopped at McDonald's on the way to Christy's house. They had been to nervous to eat and, consequently, devoured their food ina matter of minutes. As they ate, they discussed their tryout. The group laughed when Christy told about almost forgetting her name.
"I don't know what I would've done if Kevin wasn't there," Christy said. "I felt so stupid!" After polishing off their meal, the firls returned to Christy's house. They sat and watched TV, except for Amber, who paced anxiously besides the phone, waiting for it to ring. When it finally did, the girls all jumped, startled by the unexpected noise. Amber recovered and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" she said hesitantly.
"Hey Amber this is Nick."
"Hi," she replied. "What's up?"
"I just called to give you some good news," Nick stated. By this time, the others had gathered around the phone, straining to hear what Nick said.
"What?" Amber said in anticipation.
"You made it!" At this, Amber let out and ear-piercing scream.
"Wait," she stopped yelling, "what about the others?"
"They made it too," Nick informed her. At this the rest of the group screamed as well.
"Nick, I'll call you later." Amber hung up the phone and joined in the celebration. An hour later, the rest of the girls departed and Amber jumped back on the phone with Nick. After hearing him say that they needed to report tomorrow at 5:30, Amber relunctantly said goodbye. Although both cousins were excited, they went to bed. Christy and Amber wanted to rest up for the hectic, yet fun, day that awaited them.
The sound of "Get Down" jolted Claudia out of a deep sleep. Instead of slapping her alarms clock to turn off the music, she sang along even though she was only half-conscious. After the song ended, Claudia almost went back to sleep, but then she remembered why she was getting up so early. She was going to be in a Backstreet Boys video! Claudia immediately jumped out of bed and began to get ready. She pulled on her clothes, scarfed down a quick breakfast, and looked at her watched, noticing that it was 5:15. She decided to wait for Christy and Amber outside, who were supposed to be there.
Ten minutes later, Claudia was pacing back and forth in front of her house when Christy and Amber pulled up. Claudia quickly got into the ca.
"What took you so long?" she asked, before the cousins could say hello.
Christy glared at Amber. "We're late because Amber wouldn't stop fixing her hair, which looked fine the first time," she explained.
"I wasn't fixing my hair!" Amber protested. "I was just... uhh...."
Claudia laughed and Christy said, "See? She wanted it to look perfect for Nicky-poo."
Amber gave Christy a dirty look and soon th egirls arrived at the location of the video. As soon as they entered the building, they were bombarded by people telling them where to go and what to do.
"Go to makeup!"
"Make sure you get your outfits from wardrobe!"
"Check in with Fatima so she knows you're here!"
Christy, Amber, and Claudia just stood there gawking at the whirlwind of activity. After a couple of minutes, Christy snapped out of the trance and pulled at Amber's arm.
"I guess we're supposed to find Fatima," Christy said and the girls began searching for the choreographer. They finally located her on the other side of the room. They also found Erica, Sam, and the Backstreet Boys. After a quick hello, Fatima put the girls into formation and began teaching them the dance steps.
"I didn't know this was going to be so much work!" complained Amber.
"What did you expect?" Sam asked.
"I don't know," Amber paused and thought. "Lots of time to hang out with Nick."
"Girls please stop talking and concentrate!" Fatima interrupted their conversation.
The dancing proved harder than expected and Fatima quickly became frustrated. She decided to give everyone a short break, hoping they would pick up on things faster when they reconvened. Amber and Erica sought out Nick and AJ, while Christy, Claudia, and Sam decided to talk to some of the other girls they were dancing with. They introduced themselves to three girls who were standing off to the side.
"Hi," Christy greeted them. "I'm Christy and this is Claudia and Sam." The other girls said hello and gave their names.
"I'm Melissa," one of them stated. "And that's Becky and this is Nicole."
"So if this your guys' first time doing a video?" Becky asked.
"Yeah," Sam answered. "What about you?"
"Oh, we've done a couple of videos before," Nicole informed them. The girls chatted for a couple minutes, then Fatima called everybody back to work. Another choreographer took the Boys off to the side to teach them special dance steps, while Fatima continued to work with the girls.
While they were dancing, Erica and Amber were becoming distracted by the guys. They kept looking over at AJ and Nick and, consequently, lost track of what they were doing.
"Oh Nick looks so good," Amber whispered to Erica.
"Nick?" Erica laughed. "I don't think so. AJ's soo hot!!"
"Girls!!!" Fatima yelled. "Please stop talking!! The guys will be there when we finish."
Amber and Erica both turned bright red and Fatima turned her back to them. Amber stuck her tongue out at her and Erica laughed . Fatima whipped around and glared at both girls. They worked until noon, then took a break, with the intention to begin filming after they had eaten.
30 minutes later, after a quick lunch, the group reconvened. Fatima placed the boys in formation and assigned the others to a spot behind them. Christy, Amber, Erica, Sam, and Claudia were picked to dance with the guys.
"Amber, you are with Howie," Fatima instructed.
"NO WAY," said Amber.
Fatima ignored her comment, and continued to assign the other people to their spots.
"Erica, you are dancing with AJ," Fatima said.
Erica wore a triumphant smile, as she walked toward AJ. Fatima then pointed to Sam and told her that Brian is her partner.
"I am not dancing with Howie," Amber complained.
Fatima continued to ignore her. She then placed Claudia with Kevin. Christy looked disappointed.
"And last but not least, Christy, you are with Nick," Fatima finished her explanation. Christy wrinkled her nose as she walked towards Nick. Amber marched towards Fatima until she was right in her face.
"EXCUSE ME," Amber said loudly, "MAYBE YOU DIDN'T HEAR ME THE FIRST TIME. I AM NOT, I REPEAT, NOT DANCING WITH HOWIE."
"What's wrong with Howie?" Claudia asked defensively.
"Yea, what's wrong with Howie?" asked Howie.
"SHUT UP," Amber rolled her eyes in disgust.
"Amber, you are placed with Howie because of your height." Fatima explained.
"Well, can I wear platforms?" Amber inquired.
"No Amber." Fatima grabbed her by her shoulders and pushed her back in her place.
Amber crossed her arms and said, "This sucks!"
"I would trade places with you Amber, but NO, I got stuck with him," Claudia complained.
"OH STOP WHINING," Christy scolded. "At least you don't have to dance with NASAL BOY!"
"Hey!" Nick protested. "I don't sing nasal."
Everyone started talking at once. Fatima put her head in her hands. Would they ever finish this video? she thought.
