Congratulations to Wayne Gretzky for becoming the 1999 Lady Byng Trophy Winner.
He has been elected into the Hockey Hall Of Fame, Wed, June 23rd 1999.
| Gretzky is the first player I know, and the first one I like. Seeing him playing for the first time for the BLUES on '96 playoffs has made me love the game a lot.
I never paid any attentions to hockey before but he has made me doing so.
He has also become, one of many reasons, I choose the BLUES as my favorite team.

He won 4 Stanley Cups as an Oiler: '84, '85, '87 and '88, 8 Hart Memorial Trophies consecutively from '80-'87, a Lady Byng Trophy('80);
7 Art Ross Trophies consecutively from '81-'87, Athelete of the Year by the Sporting News in '81, the Emory Edge Award and Lester B Pearson Award from '82-'87,
Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in '82, the Lou Marsh Award(canada's outstanding male athelete)in '82,'83,&'85, and Conn Smythe Trophy in '84&'88.
Also posted single season records for points, assist and hat trick in '81-'82 season.
He played on 7 NHL all-star game('80-'86) and played for Canada Cup Tournament in '81,'84,&'87.
Become the 1st player to score 50 goals in fewer than 50 games(on 30 December'81, Gretzky got his first 50 goals, in 39 games),
& the 1st to average more than 2 points per game('81) and the youngest player to score 50 goals in a season
& tied with Dionne for the points lead in '79-'80 season.
He finishes his 2nd NHL season with 164 points(55 goals&109 assists) and breaks Phil Esposito's single-season points record(153) on 30 March'81 &
Bobby Orr's single-season assists record(102) on 1 April'81. On February 24, 1982, in a game againts Buffalo, Gretzky break phil Esposito's single-season scoring record of 76 goals. |
Then, he became a King (1988-1996)
The biggest trade in sports history happened on 9 August'88, when Gretzky got traded into the L.A Kings.
He scores his 600th NHL goal on 23 Nov'88. He registers his 1,851st career points and breaks Gordie Howe's NHL all-time points record(1,850) on 15 Oct'89.
Selected as the Athelete Of The Decades(the 1980s). First player to score 2,000 points(on 26 Oct'89). Won his 9th Hart Memorial Trophy in'89, his 2nd Lady Byng in '91-'92, and his 4th Lou Marsh Award in '89.
Scores his 700th NHL goal on 3 Jan'91. Played in his 4th Canada Cup in '91.
Finished as the individual scoring leader in '91&'93. Helped the Kings to their 1st Stanley Cup final in team history in '92-'93(lost to Canadiens) and finished with 40 points in playoffs.
On 22 March'94, he scored his 802nd career NHL goal to pass Howe and become the NHL all-time leading scorer.

He was traded to the BLUES on February 27, 1996 and only played for 31 games. Finished with 102 points, the 16th 100-point season of his career. |
Retired as a Ranger (1996-1999)
He wants to be reunited with his teammate Mark Messier which unfortunately the reunion only last for one season.
Led the NHL in assist with 72 in '96-'97 and tied for the lead in assist with 67 in '97-'98 season. He also become the team leading in points, assists and game-winning goal; and tied the lead in goals in '97-'98 season. He has made his 18th All Star appearance (at Tampa Bay, 1/24/99) as the starting line up (replacing Lindros)
-recorded 1 goal and 2 assists, and became the All Stars' MVP.
Wayne Gretzky has tied Gordie Howe record for most goals of 1,071 (combine both WHA:56 & NHL:1,015) on game againts Canucks(Thurs,2/4/99)- 1 goal, 2assists. 1,072nd goals on March 29, 1999 againts New York Islanders. Retire as a Rangers after playing for 20 seasons in the NHL, Sun 4/18/99.
