TITANIC WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THREE THINGS. THE MOVIE THAT BROKE ALL BOX-OFFICE RECORDS, THE MOVIE THAT IS NOW TIED AT HAVING THE MOST NOMINATIONS (ALL ABOUT EVE) (14), AND THE MOVIE THAT IS TIED AT HAVING THE MOST WINS (BEN HUR) (11).

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO GO WITH LYNN ON THIS ONE:

And it only deserved 7 of them. Visual effects - Nope. Starship Troopers should've gotten that one. Big scary bugs beat out the reality of a sinking ship any day. Film Editing - NO NO NO! Boogie Nights should have been nominated and won! It had incredible editing. Sigh. Costumes - Yes. Costumes were SO on. Original Song - Yes. Only because Madnonna made it worth it (What a SHOCKER!). Original Dramatic Score - Sure. Like James Horner needs more awards, but okay. Sound Effects Editing - Again, Boogie Nights got shafted (no pun intended). Sound - That's fine. Cinematography - Did I mention Boogie Nights? Art Direction - Here's where TITANIC began earning it's awards. Art direction was researched and done well for TITANIC. Bravo. Director - Yes! Cameron deserved this one. He did outstanding work. Best Picture - Sigh.

<< The whole Star Wars thing must be put into perspective also. It has all video sales, tons of merchandise, and the rerelease. Titanic hasn't even't gotten to the point of videos, only has some merchandise, and it also could be rereleased. It's hardly fair to compare the two at this point in time.>>

Yeah, and Star Wars has a HUGE merchandise marketing base; action figures, models, light sabres, etc. What kind of merchandise can you have for TITANIC? Replica life vests? I mean, a TITANIC ship with action figures would be pretty morbid. I guess there'd be a market in "You jump, I jump" engraved jewelry or something.

I totally agree on the Celine thing. But, I'm a little confused with how Madonna fits in.

Madonna presented the "Best Song Award." While announcing the nominees, she said Celine's name with a bit of a "tone." When it came time to open the envelope, it went something like this:

MADONNA
And the winner is...
(opens envelope, looks at it, rolls her eyes, in sarcastic tone)
What a shocker! James Horner and [such and such], "My Heart Will Go On" Theme song from TITANIC.

Madonna steps to the side, trying to keep from vomiting. Suddenly, she rips the Oscar from Horner's hands and chucks it in the general direction of Celine, where it hits her square in the Heart of the Ocean necklace, which shatters and sends shards flying everywhe-- oh, wait... that last bit didn't happen. Oh well. At least the sarcasm part was real.
