And there was a crash. Andy knocked Max unconscious with Conan's other
mug. Max fell to the floor, Conan stood frozen with terror. Andy was
panting, his heart was pounding like never before. They stood for a
moment, then Conan felt dizzy and fell to his knees.
"Oh My God, I-I, Andy, he, Oh my God," Conan rambled like this then the
tears started flowing. Andy came over and hugged Conan, he could tell
Conan needed him now more then every.
"Its ok, you're all right, he's gone," Andy calmed Conan in a soothing
voice. Then Conan looked over to see Max, sprawled on the floor, his
arms looked like they were reaching for Conan. He freaked, he got up and
ran to his office. He saw La Bamba laying there, and the mug pieces
still faintly resembled the message of "NEVER" he turned and ran into
the next unlocked room, the conference room. Conan crawled under the
table, curled in a ball crying. Andy soon found him and coaxed him our.
He called the police and sent Conan home. The police came in and
questioned Andy and were about to go for Conan but Andy stopped them.
"No, he's had a bad enough day as it is. Maybe you could hold off until
tomorrow, so he can calm down." Andy pleaded. They agreed after some begging.
It was determined that Max had been drunk, Conan had to testify in the
trial. He told the story, and was questions, it all went smoothly until
he looked over to Max, he was glaring at Conan. As if he blamed Conan
for this. At that moment, all the hate he had for that monster bubbled over.
"You! You have ruined my life! You killed people for no reason except
that the bar had a special: But 10 beers get 1 free." Conan even joked
in times of seriousness. He continued like this for a little bit, until
he looked over to Max's family. His wife sitting there sobbing, his
children were sleeping, they had no idea what was going on. Conan
stopped mid sentence and went off into his own little world, not
believing what he had done.
He left the court after the verdict, "Guilty, Prison for life." He
wanted to get home fast, he needed to think. But Max's wife stopped him.
"I'm so sorry, I'm embarrassed, I know Max would never do that
regularly. I, oh God." She trailed off.
Conan suddenly felt very guilty and hugged her saying, "It's all right,
I know that too. I forgive him, it'll get better."
They stood there for a few moments. Then Max's children came out and
Conan couldn't face them so he left.
Once he got home, he slept for 12 hours. In his dreams he was seeing the
knife coming at him over and over again. He had these reacuring dreams
for the rest of his life.
NBC found a new band leader within a week. He was good, but not as good
as Max used to be. The show continued, getting better by the year. Conan
and Andy got 12 more Emmys, they seemed happy enough, but in the back of
their mind, they would never forget that night.
