Review - Mickey Blue Eyes

Sticky Blue

Mickey Blue Eyes is so predictable. Oh, certainly not to the extent of Runaway Bride, but it was still quite formulaic.

For example, Hugh Grant's character is "English" in every sense of the stereotype. He is also the young, handsome manager of an auction house. Oh, please. What, do auction houses just give out manager jobs like business cards? "Oh, hi, you're young, handsome, and 'British'! Would you like to manage our auction house?" Plus, he's "funny" and "lovable" to boot. Perfect.

Now we match him up with a "perfect" girl. But, of course, both members of the couple can't be perfect. And, since Hugh Grant is utterly incapable of playing anyone with any type of neurosis, his girlfriend, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, is the one with a couple disfunctions, including the undeniable fact that her father's a mobster.

Now, this is supposed to provide "complications." But it doesn't, really. It's just kind of dumb. The ending takes too long to arrive and isn't satisfying enough. It's like, I waited through that whole movie and this is the thanks I get? It's not such a bad movie, it's just so...dumb.

Here's what I say: if you insist on seeing any part of this movie, at least see the fortune cookie scene. Sure, it's a total Chinese stereotype, but you'll laugh your backside off.

Grade - C+
