November 19, 2000 - Sunday
Today was a great day! I got a lot of things done. Last night I got a call from
a friend of mine at about 2 am and we talked for a long time. It was nice.
I went to bed around 4 am. I was watching a Spike Lee movie that was on at a mysterious
time in the morning. I can't say I really enjoyed it either.
This morning I woke up, went to the bathroom and realized that it was really light,
so when I went back to bed I put a mask on over my eyes. Then I went back to sleep.
I was asleep, it was around 9:30 or 10:00 when the phone rang. I woke up, pulled
off the mask, but by the time I found the phone it had stopped ringing. I went back to
sleep. I finally woke up around 12:30. A few minutes later I had Justin ringing
my door. I wasn't dressed so I had to grab my coat to put on. He wanted me to come
to his concert. Well, I'm afraid I said no.
In the afternoon I did my laundry...it seemed to take forever. When I finished I
went out to buy my boots, and ran into Justin. This time he was going in and then
out for dinner. He did ask me along, but I really wanted to get those boots.
I made my way up the hill and then down Hanozono Street. It was like a skating rink.
It was scary.
I got to the shoe store and I had a look around. They had nice shoes, but they were
all too small for me, but, they did have some boots. I got a pair of GT Hawkins
which are supposed to have special ice treads because it really looks like I'll need
them.
After I bought the boots, I went to the department store Maru Imai and did some grocery
shopping. I was wondering around the store and I saw a can in two languages. It
was a can of Libby's Deep Browned Beans from Canada. I don't know why, but I got
a bit teary at the sight. I was thinking about all the things I miss in Japan from home,
like Bick's pickles, and Shake and Bake. I got some bagels, some buns, some pork
and some cream cheese. Oh and some milk tea.
I carefully picked my way home again. It was bloody scary. The road was so icy that
taxis weren't even driving on the hill. The sidewalk was just as bad.
When I got home I got energized. I got out my rice cooker and used it to make apple
sauce. When it was about ready, I cooked the pork chops and then made a bit of a
demi-glasse sauce with some white wine I had in the fridge. I served it all with
some of the buns that I had bought. It was simple I know, but really good. After I ate I
even washed all the dishes. Can you believe it? Nope, me neither! But it's true.
I even decided to take a bath so I cleaned the bath and ran myself a tub full of water.
It was nice. I feel all rested and relaxed for a change. I haven't done a lot of
talking today and as a result my voice and throat feel a little bit better. I also
am in a lot less pain today.
Tomorrow, I have my lesson and then I'm not sure what I'll do. I might go into Sapporo
as I haven't been there for a long time, but it depends if I can navigate the roads
or not. There's a lot of ice out there.
Tune in tomorrow and find out what I do.
