Matt grew up in Massachusetts, and got his start in music from his father. Throughout high school and college he played in electric rock bands, but when he started playing with Keith as Vertical Horizon, he dusted off his acoustic that he had played when he was younger and "faked his way through the first few sets." Matt attended Deerfield Academy (a boarding school) for high school, where he and Keith later recorded There And Back Again. After high school, he moved on to Georgetown where he played in a band called Fallout Shelter. This was how Keith recognized him.
