Vertical Horizon was formed in 1991, when Keith Kane saw Matt Scannell (and recognized him from another band in the area called Fallout Shelter) sitting in on one of his shows and invited him on stage to try a few songs. Within a week they were a group. They studied at Georgetown, and upon graduation a few years later, they decided to pursue music. Lucky us :) They released There and Back Again (which was recorded at Matt's high school) in 1991, that cd is just Keith and Matt playing and singing, no one else. Their sophomore record, Running On Ice, added a rhythm section. Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band came and recorded the tracks with them in a matter of days. Sometime after that (but before the release of their third album) they added Ed Toth as their permanent drummer, and Ryan "Chopper" Fisher as their bassist. Prior to this, they had decided that, while they liked their acoustic sound, they wanted more noise behind their music, and decided to change to a more electric sound. Thus the Vertical Horizon that most new fans know was born.
