Missy had made that trip down 101 many times. It is a simple drive really. A straight shot. Listen to some music, one stop for gas, and you’re there. Missy had the Newsboys’ CD “Take Me To Your Leader” playing when she died. She was passing a truck, went out of control, and was killed. Instantly. I saw the boulder that she hit her head against. It’s lying there, right next to the highway still. Grey, solid, unmoving.
How then do we weigh these things? We will never know what happened between the truck and Missy, but how can we set the consequences – death – against the event? The CHP says she 'overcorrected' as the truck got too close, either due to her movement toward the truck or vice versa.
What a horrific price to pay! And what a tester of faith. If God is real, if God is sovereign, if God is good, then how do I understand this? How do I explain this to my children?
The answer of course comes from within (my faith has never been based upon circumstances) and from without. Job, the beleaguered Old Testament figure, asks just that. He is told, “Where were you when the earth was formed and the stars were hung in the sky…”
Very true - and this does satisfy the mind.
But why does my heart still ache, God?
