Missy's musical love was English horn. There is a richness and depth to the sound that drew her to it as she gained experience. The oboe, hauntingly beautiful in its sound, was of course also loved, but playing English horn in concerts or recitals was always fondly anticipated by Missy.
Showing musical talent at a young age, Missy started piano at age five. A decision about a second instrument came along at age ten, before Missy had any personal knowledge of other instruments. The oboe was chosen for her and it took a few years for her to "own" the decision herself. But she did study, listen, tie reeds, practice, and otherwise throw herself into this wonderful, difficult, most glorious of instruments without any reservation. Even in those early years there was a trust relationship with us that allowed Missy to push on even though she did not herself understand why the oboe had been selected.
Great musical success came Missy's way. She played for several youth orchestras - California Youth Symphony and South Bay Youth Orchestra - as well as playing in others occasionally by invitation. She traveled to Spain for two weeks in 1998 with CYS on what was a thrilling tour of many Spanish cities, playing in several beautiful theaters and concert halls. In 1997 she went with SBYO to the Pacific Northwest for a concert tour.
Missy was selected to the All-State Honor Band twice, the All-State Honor Orchestra once, and the All-County Honor Band three times. She was awarded the John Philip Sousa Outstanding Instrumentalist prize at The King's Academy.
We feel privileged to have been Missy's parents. She brought us joy, beauty, and a special sense of wonder in looking at the world through her eyes.
We won't know why you took her home so early, Lord. And, as Job from centuries ago, we do bless your name. But will you do one thing for us, Lord? Will you give Missy a kiss for us this day in Paradise?
