SACRAMENTO NADER CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF
From Jeanie Keltner, Sacramento County Nader Campaign Coordinator:
"To all of you who are now getting the Sacgreenews since you've volunteered
for the Nader campaign- and of course to you longer time Greens-we're looking
forward to seeing you at the upcoming Nader Volunteer Kick-off, 7pm Tuesday
July 18 at Sierra 2 (2791 24th St).
It looks like we'll have a good group of enthusiastic people, ready
to help shift our political scene a bit-or a lot! Besides high spirits,
remember to bring your datebooks-and be thinking about the connections-
names and phone numbers and email addresses-you may have to media people,
places the campaign could hold mini-fundraisers, musicians, folks who might
contribute food, printing, other activists you might call to join with
us, groups you belong to that someone from the campaign could speak with
about Nader.
Start your idea machine! We're beginners at this and we don't have the
DemRep $$$ millions, so we need all the help you can give. This truly
is a people's campaign, OUR campaign!"
The Nader Campaign Manager for the state of California, Ross Mirkarimi,
will be there to speak and answer questions--this really is a not-to-be-missed
event!
3)
NADER IN SACTO ON AUGUST 24TH
You heard it here first. The details are still being worked out,
but it's a safe bet that you'll hear a lot more about it before the month
is out!
4)
NEW SACNADER EMAIL GROUP
The Sacramento County Green Party's Webmaster Rene Hamlin has just
started a new email group for those of you wanting to discuss the Nader
campaign and our efforts in support of it. To subscribe to the SacNader
email group send an email to SacNader-subscribe@egroups.com
We will use this group to inform members of Nader issues and events.
It is not a general Green Party forum.
5)
JUSTICE FOR JANITORS RALLY
"Even minimum wage
with no benefits isn't cheap enough: Sutter has been found guilty
in State Superior Court of not even paying for all hours worked.
Sutter keeps the workers under control with fear, firing one worker after
another for organizing with the Union." --from a SEIU Local 1877 flier
Justice for Janitors will be sponsoring a march for justice for the working
poor on Thursday, July 20 at Noon at Cesar Chavez park at 9th and I Streets
in Sacramento. Come show your support for a living wage. Greens
that can make the march could have a sign saying Greens for Justice for
Janitors/Vote Nader. Showing that we support others' struggles is
the best way to help make the Greens as diverse as the society around us.
6)
SACBEE SHOULD COVER NADER CAMPAIGN
Don't forget the power of Letters to the Editor. Write the Bee
today at opinion@sacbee.com and ask why, if they believe Nader and Buchanan
should be in the debate, they're not covering the Nader campaign.
A couple of sentences is all that's needed. You can BCC jekeltner@aol.com
so we know that they're hearing from us. Here's to a surprising election!
7)
NADER VIDEO HOUSE PARTY
Did you miss Nader's acceptance speech on CNN? A video of this historic
address will be showing at 1640 Land Park Drive-Wednesday, July 26 at 7pm.
For more information, call 446-3304 or 444-3203. Come and bring friends!
8)
GREENTALKS
Come to these Greentalks at Luna's Cafe, 1414- 16th St. (at O St.),
7 - 8:30 PM. For more information, email greens@sacgreens.org, call 484-5888
or visit www.sacgreens.org
July 19:

Reform. Kriss Greenlee and Rick Bettis will speak on Common Cause's proposal
or local campaign contributions and public financing.
August 2nd:
Greentalk on Deer Creek
Hills and the fight against the senior citizens' housing hoax.
9)
SAVE THE SIERRA NEVADA FORESTS
"Vote" for less logging and more protection of the forest ecosystem.
Urge the Forest Service to select Alternative 5 of the Sierra Nevada Regional
Management Plan because it will provide the best long-term management for
the forests by protecting watersheds, tourism, recreation, wildlife and
scenery.
Forest Service Hearing
Saturday 7/29, 9am to 1pm
Convention Center, J Street, Sacramento
For more information see www.sierraforests.org
10)
NADER ADDRESSES THE NAACP
What an inspiring speech! Read the text here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/onpolitics/elections/nader071100.htm
11)
NADER HIRES JESSE VENTURA'S AD-MAN
Ralph Nader has hired William Hillsman, the irreverent admaker who
helped a flamboyant pro wrestler become governor of Minnesota, in hopes
of boosting his third-party presidential campaign: http://www.latimes.com/print/20000712/t000065488.html
12)
SAC COUNTY GREENS NEAR RECORD NUMBERS
The all-time record for number of registered Greens in Sacramento County
is 4,421 (on New Year's day, 1992). We now have 4227. How much
do you want to bet we smash the record before election day? By the
way, statewide, Greens are at an all-time record right now, and growing
fast! Register a friend! You can get forms by calling 1-800-345-VOTE
(8683) or by dropping by the Sacramento Nader Campaign Kickoff.
13)
THE SO-CALLED "SPOILER EFFECT"
You have just got to read this article that's on The Nation's Website.
It's the best article I've ever read on the "spoiler effect." Go
to www.thenation.com and under "What's to Spoil," click on Christopher
Hitchen's name. Katha Pollitt's counter-article is extremely interesting
too. She is supposedly arguing against Nader, but it sounds like
to me that what she really wants is to be convinced to vote for Nader.
See you at Sierra Two this Tuesday! It's going to be a blast!
