Hello
Everyone,
The
following issues/topics will be discussed at the next Student Trustee meeting.
Now…. It is important that you read through what’s going on and let
me know what your ideas are. Also
please let me know if you are interested in helping out.
Jane Gilbert offered to take on one of the issues from our last meeting
(thanks Jane), and if anyone else is interested in helping out in one of the
following areas just let me know.
I am
warning you before hand as to the length of this email, but I maintain that
the message contained within is of the utmost importance and I hope you will
also.
We held a meeting for Student Trustees at the CalSACC Conference this past
weekend at the San Francisco Airport Marriot in Burlingame. I thought we
had really good attendance and some great discussion on some topics that
pertain to us all. I really want
to thank the Student Trustees who attended and participated in all the
discussions. There were
almost 30 participants at our last meeting.
ROLE
The first topic for discussion was the Role of Student Trustees. We
briefly discussed the action taken by the CCCT Board in September and then we
let those in attendance know that we will be asking the CalSACC Policy Board
to reexamine their stance on our Role. In 1992 the Policy Board took a
position in favor of the first perspective, which says we are the A.S.
representative on the Board. We will be asking CalSACC to change their
stance to be in favor of the second perspective and then we can have the whole
policy paper adjusted. The
CalSACC Policy Board will be meeting at CCLC’s Fall conference (November 16th
–18th) and this item
should be on the agenda for discussion. If
any of you could attend it would be great to have the support there.
ST
MEETING
We then went on to talk about the concept of having a Student Trustee
Caucus/Group/Gathering. This topic was discussed at length and
after our discussion Jane Gilbert, from Cabrillo, volunteered to try to come
up with a more concrete plan. The
hope is that we have some sort of formal arrangement for Student Trustees to
get together. The concept
is very important to develop a mechanism to ensure Student Trustee meetings
and collective discussion. Think
about it and if you have any ideas email Jane Gilbert at LadyJane10@juno.com
and also me at michaelmagsaysay@hotmail.com
. Thank you Jane for looking in to this for us. This item will be on the
agenda for our next meeting.
Two other issues came up while we were discussing different issues that
individuals were facing. The first was how does a district with more
than one college get more than one Student Trustee and the second was how are
Student Trustees recalled from the board.
MULTI-MEMBERS
The first
issue of having more than one Student Trustee sitting on the Board is
something that I am not too familiar with because my district is a single
college district. However, in
this last year we have seen 3 more districts adopt policies for multiple
student members. If there
is anyone out there who has seen this accomplished or someone who is really
interested in this and would like to research it and bring it to the next
meeting let us know and we will put it on the agenda.
ELECTION
& RECALL
The recall
topic was brought up and no one was really clear if there is a right answer.
The question was how are Student Trustees removed from the Board.
If you have procedures for recall in your district we would like for
you to email those to us. The question of how Student Trustees are
elected was also raised. We are
going to ask the Community College League of California if they have looked at
this before and it will also be on the agenda for our next meeting.
If you are interested in working on this issue, please send me an
email.
MEETING
Speaking of our next meeting it will be at the Los Angeles Westin at LAX on
the 17th of November. The
meeting will be in the Midway room on the 2nd floor and will be
from 8-10 p.m. That is the second day of the League's Fall Conference.
If you are going to the meeting email me and let me know. Even if you
are not registered for the conference you are invited to attend the meeting.
If you need more information because you would like to go the
information is on the Student Trustee web site at www.angelfire.com/ca6/studenttrustees
. It is also available on the League's web site at www.ccleague.org
. This conference is a Trustee conference so I highly recommend this one
over anything else in the upcoming year.
Please
attend our next meeting. Even
if you are not registered you are invited to the Student Trustee meeting.
If your district is unwilling to pay for the conference, ask
them to at least compensate you for the meeting.
If you will be attending please email us so we can try to organize
carpools and maybe even see if there are Student Trustees who are willing to
allow others to stay in their room.
I apologize for getting the last notice for a meeting out so late hopefully
this one gives you enough time. I
will have these items on the agenda for our next meeting, if you would like to
see other items included please let me know and we will discuss them then.
Please get back to me on items for discussion by Thursday, November 9.
I will send the agenda out that weekend.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the past meeting and I look
forward to seeing and hearing from all of you soon.

possible. Bring plenty of friends.
