I was introduced to computer programming at the age of 12. In 1986, there was a course being conducted at my alma mater, Harrison College, by a company named Digital Programming Services. I was taught the BASIC programming language on the
Commodore 64. This experience ignited my passion for using the computer to solve problems and do fascinating things.
It was a rather large step up from the old '64 when I did the Barbados Community College's Associate Degree in Computer Studies between 1991 and 1993. I was introduced to the PC, Wordperfect 5.1, Lotus 1-2-3. dBase III Plus, MS-DOS, Windows, Foxpro 2.0, Turbo Pascal, Cobol, Turbo C and systems analysis among other things. In the work attachment term of this course I used my knowledge of programming and systems analysis to develop a program for the Skills Training Board. My sojourn at UWI exposed me to C/C++, JAVA, HTML (I originally created this site as a project for UWI;s web course CS22K), PERL, PROLOG, LISP, 8085/8086 assembly language, software engineering, digital logic, computer architecture, artificial intelligence, networks and many more subject areas. For me it was a lengthy but worthwhile experience which demanded maturity and self-development. I will treasure the memories of lecturers (if you've been at UWI and you've never taken a Marvel Oneal course, you've definitely missed something special) and fellow students alike. Software development remains my main interest in the computer science field. I have been around CPU's, monitors, keyboards, diskettes, code etc for eons and it is where I feel most at home. |
