POEM TO
DAVID CASSIDY

He grew up being every girl's fantasy
And always singing with a very gifted voice,
He never dreamed of becoming a "teen idol" when
  he was young
In other words, that was never a choice.

He can sing any song with no problem at all
Because he always has a song in his heart,
If people loved his music, you can see them singing
  along with him
And having his records on the music chart.

David Cassidy is a gift to anyone else in his time
And making music with passion, confidence and above
   all else with love
He will always be the "teen idol" with a smile that
can melt a young girl's heart
Because to his family, he is a gift from Heaven above.

PATRICK CASSIDY AT THE COPA

We have received feedback from fans who have seen David's brother Patrick at the Copa, and the general impression is that Patrick did an excellent job. One question fans have asked is whether Patrick would do "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" and "I Think I Love You" during the mini concert. He didn't. Instead he sang the Spencer Davis classic "Gimme Some Loving." He also danced a lot more in the show than David.

The audience was thinner, but the  audience that was there was very enthusiastic and really enjoyed Patrick. The show was pretty much the same - the only adjustment that needed to be made (other than 'Gimme Some Lovin'') was Lefty yelling out, 'I'll get you Flamingo!!' He couldn't very well yell out 'I'll get you little man!!' like he does with David since Patrick isn't so very 'little'.

Other from that the show was very much the same as David's but one change  that Patrick did was when Johnny tells reporters that he has a greatest hits album coming out soon and the band plays the beginning of "I Think I Love You," Patrick said, 'I gotta get some new material'.

Our sources can also inform us that  Patrick's mother Shirley Jones was in the audience on Friday night (Sept. 11)  and on Sunday his brother Shaun was there.

We have also heard that Patrick Cassidy will be taking over the lead in the musical Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway sometime in September, co-starring with Cheryl Ladd. (Thanks to Barbara/Just David Fan Club for this information).

Also thanks to Amy from the David Cassidy Chatlist for submitting the photo and details from the show. You can view more of her photos at www.geocities.com/Broadway/Lobby/7061/PatrickInCopa.html

The Saratoga Day at the Races

In spite of endless rain, Sue and David Cassidy's charity at one of  USA's oldest thoroughbred race tracks in Saratoga Springs in New York, turned out to be a success. Many volunteers from across the country that helped Sue Cassidy in the final moments before the event. Many of them were David Cassidy fans who flew in, paid their admission and then volunteered just to get a glimpse of David. To read about the event, and to view photos from the event, go to www.partridgemania.com/articles/Saratoga.htm

After the charity there has been rumors about the Cassidys moving to Saratoga. David said that  he has bought property in Saratoga and plans to move his family there upon completion of a house.  "I've enjoyed Saratoga and have visited here for the last 25 years.  I was born in New York and I will die in New York.  This is truly the finest place I have ever been and we're all happy to be a part of it."  The Cassidy's made no mention as to when they would be moving, but
unsubstantiated rumors are circulating that his upcoming Atlantic City performances may be "testing the waters" for a move to the East Coast as soon as January 2001. According to the Just David Fan Club it is just a summer home and everything else is just rumors. David has not said anything official on moving or when.

At the charity event several fans told David that they'd see him in Atlantic City.  He replied "I want you to scream and shout in Atlantic City, 'cause we're gonna rock!" This means we're all gonna party and have fun!

Columnist Susan Snyder:
These stars know how to swing

Call them second bananas, second string or even the B-Team of the stars.
But don't go calling Las Vegas understudies second-rate. For when the Strip's stars fall, these people make sure the shows go on. They jump in at a moment's notice, covering for the ill, injured or vacationing.
Understudies learn several roles, memorizing who says what, which dancer goes where and which songs to sing when.
Swing performers -- "swings" for short -- sweat through rehearsals only to sit backstage and wait in case someone drops out. If no one does, they go home without setting foot on stage.
     This is Paul May's world.
May, 35, portrays "The Master of Time," a principal role in the MGM Grand's "EFX" production.
Unless star Tommy Tune becomes ill. Then May slips into the lead. Out of more than 700 shows, May has stepped in for Tune 17 times (yes, he keeps track).
The prospect of being tossed on stage as a Las Vegas show's last-minute lead would send most people straight to the cold-sweat-and-cookie-toss booth.
     May thrives on such fear.
"It's an adrenaline rush," he said. "It's a roller-coaster ride. You're excited and nervous at the same time."
He recalls when it was mostly nervous. That was about six months after he joined "EFX" in 1996. He was understudy for then-lead David Cassidy, plus the four principal players.
That's five major parts to learn -- just in case. Initially May sat through rehearsals, following each performer's lines in the script and studying where each one stood and what each one did.
"I had to sit around and wait for him (Cassidy) to get hurt," May joked.
Laughs didn't come so easily those first weeks -- especially the day Cassidy took a header during rehearsal.
"I saw him fall, and my heart just sank because I knew he wouldn't be able to perform the next night," May said. "They hadn't given me a rehearsal yet."
Costume workers called him the next day, saying he needed a fitting. Finally, it seemed, he was getting that dress rehearsal.
"(The fitter) said to me, 'You must be really excited that you're going on tonight.' And I said, 'What?!' " May recalled. "The performance was my dress rehearsal."
Most understudies have a regular role with an understudy of their own, May said. When the lead is out, the understudy moves up, as does the understudy's understudy. A swing likely replaces the understudy's understudy.
The whole mess sounds like a bad Abbott and Costello routine.
Standing in for big stars carries a lot of pressure. May must be highly entertaining while using an economy of personal style. He is fully aware people paid to see Cassidy or Tune, not him.
May figures it's a tightrope few are willing to walk.
"Other people hate it," he said. "I didn't even realize I had the ability to do it until I was thrown into it."
He grinned as he spoke. The guy looks forward to work like a kid looks forward to summer vacation.
     "It's really something," May said.
And definitely not for the second-rate.

Cassidy draws crowd to fund-raiser

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Musician David Cassidy made a lot of fans happy Aug. 12 at Saratoga Race Course when he mingled among a crowd gathered for the KidsCharities.org fund-raiser.

Cassidy is promoting the charity which, in part, will benefit children of the backstretch. More than $42,000 was raised that day, and a lot of true-blue fans went home smiling.

Kids benefit from track luncheon

Singer David Cassidy loves New York state so much, and Saratoga Springs especially, so he's planning to build a summer home here.

Cassidy, dressed in this season's popular black crewneck T-shirt topped by a shiny beige linen jacket, was surrounded by ''Partridge Family'' fans.

The Las Vegas singer-producer was not only in town to race his thoroughbreds, but to help raise funds at the David Cassidy/KidsCharities.org benefit Saturday, Aug. 12, in the At the Rail Pavilion at Saratoga Race Course.

''I came here once as a child when my mom did summer stock and we went to the Spa (state park) and it was just the prettiest place I've ever been,'' Cassidy explained. ''I've never forgotten it. I've been here at least one day a year for the past 25 years.''

About 200 guests supported the cause with many silent auction items. The day's activities and ticket sales raised $42,524. Auction bidding continues at Yahoo's charity auction site, www.KidsCharities.org.

''You're at the finest racetrack in all of the world,'' Cassidy told the crowd. ''I was born in New York and hope I die here.''

He thanked the many people who made the day possible, including ''NYRA's incredible efforts,'' his wife Sue, and Chairwoman Debbie Avellino of Saratoga Springs.

As guests devoured platefuls of yummy food, Cassidy scurried back and forth from the pavilion to the clubhouse to watch his horse, Lady d'Jour, finish fourth in the first race.

Cassidy also greeted the children playing in the ''Kids Tent'' near the Big Red Spring. All funds from the benefit will be used to support several children's charities.

Cassidy and his wife have a 9-year-old son, and he said he wants to spend as much time as he can with him, adding ''I don't want to be an absentee father.''

His goal, he said, is to continue helping children's charities and spend at least a half-year here and the other half working.

Among the guests of KidsCharities were Richard and Diane Bomze, owners of retired racehorse Fourstardave, who are very involved with the Belmont Child Care Association, one of the charities that benefited from the day's proceeds. Belmont will benefit as well from the Fourstardave Gala slated for Aug. 23 at Canfield Casino.

Also present were Cindy and Brien Hollowood, who were still recuperating from a late night at the racing museum ball; Peter Belmonte; Sen. Tarkey Lombardi and his wife Mary Anne; Lori and John Barnes; Richard and Jackie Saxton with Kate, Rich and Jane Saxton; Terry and Jeff Baker; John Hendrickson, who stopped by to give a donation on behalf of himself and his wife Marylou Whitney; Leisha Farone; Eileen and Joe Cornnacchi; and Joanne Barrie.

August 24, 2000: The San Diego Union-Tribune writes:
Cassidy takes an optimistic view of life

By Luaine Lee (Scripps Howard News Service)

PASADENA -- He may have been the sacred calf of the '70s, but David Cassidy insists it's much better to be part of the herd.

Hurled to fame by TV's smash "The Partridge Family," Cassidy plummeted from a teen idol to a booze-bedazzled veteran in just 12 years.

"Talent survives, but the people may not," he says. "I've seen so many people self-destruct and at the time -- in 1986 -- I was in the darkest, most unhappy, most unhealthy (place). I'd just gotten out of a divorce. I was broke. I was almost a million dollars in debt. I'd left all my personal belongings -- everything I owned except for what I could carry -- with my ex-wife."

Now a headlining performer in "At the Copa," a show he executive-produces and stars in at the Rio Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and creator of "The Rat Pack Is Back!" playing at the Sahara in Vegas, Cassidy has resurfaced in full force.

But his 268-mile journey from Hollywood to Las Vegas makes Marco Polo's look like a Sunday walk.

"That kind of life is not what it's cracked up to be," he says of the celebrity flush following "The Partridge Family. "A lot of people aspire to that, and I can only tell them it ain't all that it appears. It was pretty sudden. In those days, network TV was the only thing in town. There was no video. And 95 percent of all people 17 years and younger that were home watching television were watching me. It was almost required viewing, everyone has told me. That was a really cool thing. It was all over the world, too. It's been a fascinating life, I have to say," he shakes his head.

The fame brought with it money, power and overindulgence. "I was never a drug addict," he says, placing his fork down. "I was just into excessive, self-destructive behavior, and I'm not alone. It was everywhere, all the time. It was actually horrible. I can't think of anything more unpleasant than being around a bunch of stoned, smelly people who haven't showered. I can't characterize it by any movie that one has seen, I can only characterize it as its own hell . . .

"There were a lot of very excessively wealthy self-destructive people that were around me that were taking the ride with me. And famous ones, too," he adds.

Cassidy, 50, says he was present enough to know that the troupes of women he attracted were not there because of his sweet character or jolly personality. "I didn't mind hanging out with people like that," he says, shaking his head. "But I knew -- with women -- I knew. But that didn't matter to me. I actually preferred it. I didn't have to get involved. 'You don't really want me, you want this. OK, it works for me tonight.' "

But it didn't work forever. Two sour marriages, a daughter out of wedlock, no work, no money and no possibilities greeted Cassidy when he woke up in the apartment of his best friend's sister and looked back on what had happened.

He'd been an eager fledgling when, 15 years before (just two weeks out of high school), he'd auditioned seven times for theater great George Abbott before he snagged a job.

Working in the mail room of the Deering-Miliken Textile Factory, Cassidy gave up the chance to screen test for a Hollywood TV show in order to do the play.

But the play closed in three weeks. "I called and said, 'My show closed.' And (the agent) said, 'I'm sending you a plane. I want you out here now.'

"I was 18 and looked 14. It was the part of a college student. I was good, but I was way too young. They cast an actor by the name of M.K. Douglas. Michael Douglas. He was 20 and looked 18 or 19."

Still Cassidy, who was the son of actor Jack Cassidy and actress Evelyn Ward, started lining up TV gigs in shows like "Marcus Welby, M.D.," "Bonanza," and "The Mod Squad."

When "The Partridge Family" -- in which Cassidy was cast with his stepmother, Shirley Jones -- arrived, no one predicted its massive popularity.

During the hysteria that followed, Cassidy met his current wife, Sue, on a trip to England. "We met originally in 1973 and dated then. She lived there. Then we didn't see each other for 13 years, then we dated."

It was a series of hurdles that brought Cassidy back from the purgatory he'd designed for himself. Through a friend he managed to rent a 12-year-old Chevy for $100 a month; he continued to live in the apartment of his friend's sister; and he began to run.

"Running became very therapeutic for me. I used to drive down to Venice. Most of the running I began doing was to keep me from falling apart. I would make it my job because I didn't have a job. I'd run six days a week. I ran in Venice where there were a lot of homeless people. I had glasses on and would pass them and thought, 'If I don't do this, that's where I'm going to be.' I'd say, 'I'm that close. Keep going, keep going.' I made that my mantra."

A chance meeting with an agent in a restaurant offered Cassidy the chance to perform with Laurence Olivier back in London. "I got on an airplane and was there for seven months and paid back all the debt. I had the confidence that I believe every actor has who believes in something beyond getting lucky. If you can just carry on for more than 15 minutes. I had a lot of confidence in myself and my work. It bailed me out. From that I went and made a record. I had a hit record, and got a publishing deal."

When he returned to the states, he starred with his half-brother, Shaun, in the play, "Blood Brothers," a successful turn which stunned the show-business community.

After that, he took over for Michael Crawford in the Vegas extravaganza, "EFX."

Today Cassidy throws down one last gulp of water and rushes to catch a plane back to Las Vegas, where he appears nightly in "At the Copa" with Sheena Easton.

"I've had a chance to really evaluate it," he says of his life so far. "And I think I've got a double E ticket. For that, I feel very fortunate. The highs have been incredibly high and the lows have been really pretty low." (Copyright 2000 Union-Tribune Publishing Co.)

August 25, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: The Wednesday afternoon showing of the Breck Wall and Patrick Maes production "Bottoms Up" brought out a slew of Vegas entertainers.
Siegfried & Roy, David Cassidy and Sheena Easton (sitting some distance apart and looking a little frosty), Bill Acosta (who is said to still be in the running for a spot at the Flamingo if he can free himself from his current contract at the Luxor), Bob Anderson, Darren Romeo, Kenny Kerr (who recently got the news that his show at the Plaza is being dumped next month), Marty Allen, alleged Sahara magician Steve Wyrick, most of the Crazy Girls and the boys from "La Cage" were all in attendance to lend support to Wall as he debuted his age-old topless comedy revue.
Although most in the old-timer crowd claimed the jokes in Wednesday's show were the same ones generated back in the dark ages, the afternoon was still a bona fide hoot. And there are gags here that you won't see anywhere else in this new age of Strip entertainment. Personally, I'd pay good money to see Danny Gans or the cast of "Mystere" trot on stage in full drag, make jokes about ample-breasted women and lip-synch to cheesy love songs, but until that day comes "Bottoms Up" is a fiendishly good way to pass the time.

August 26, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: A brief report in Friday's New York Post gossip sheets had Donny Osmond replacing Tommy Tune in MGM's "EFX." The hotel was mum, Tune was MIA, his manager is on vacation and Osmond is somewhere in Utah (no doubt recuperating from the cancellation of his and sister Marie's sickeningly sweet talk show), so nobody was available for comment.
If it's true, it would make some sense. Osmond's name had been tossed around a few years back when the production was looking to replace David Cassidy in the starring role.
Speaking of Cassidy, the star of "At the Copa" at the Rio let his half-brother, Patrick Cassidy, fill in for him for a week earlier this month and now it looks as though Patrick is Broadway bound.
Cassidy is in rehearsals for "Annie Get Your Gun" in New York City and is scheduled to take over a starring role in the popular musical in September, opposite former "Charlie's Angel" Cheryl Ladd, who is replacing the current Annie, Bernadette Peters.

August 31, 1974:  "The Partridge Family" ended its TV run, one day after the last episode of "The Brady Bunch" aired.

CASSIDYS IN BRIEF:

Second annual Family Television Awards, hosted by country music star REBA MCENTIRE. Other celebrity appearances include DAVID CASSIDY and DICK VAN PATTEN. At Beverly Hilton Hotel (airs on CBS Aug. 10 at 9 PM Eastern Standard Time).

David Cassidy did not show up for the Yankees' game on August 8, where he was supposed to sing the National Anthem. This is what a press statement said: "Partridge Family" legend David Cassidy, scheduled to sing the national anthem at last night's Yankees game, was forced to cancel his appearance at the last minute. Cassidy's publicist says that Cassidy was in Saratoga Springs preparing for the David Cassidy/KidsCharities.org Day at the Races (this Saturday) when he developed a stomach flu and couldn't make the flight.  "He was very upset."  "His son, Beau, flew with him just to catch the game. They're both avid baseball fans." Cassidy's appearance will be rescheduled.

Thanks to Sue from the David Cassidy Chatlist who provided us with this information from Buddha Records: Regarding the later, out of print Partridge Family and David Cassidy albums. . .  should the four that we've just released prove to be commercially successful, we will consider reissuing the remainder of the Partridge Family catalogue. A determination on the success of the current Partridge Family releases will not be made for at least a year. The reissue of David Cassidy's solo debut, "Cherish," is set to be released on CD this fall.

Apparently Shirley Jones is going to attend the Big Bear Film Fest north of Los Angeles, and is  scheduled to receive an award, on September 17. (Thanks to Val from the Shaun Cassidy Chatlist for this information).

Shirley Jones and Charo will reportedly make cameo appearances on the Oct. 17 episode of Fox's That '70s Show.

We've heard that Patrick Cassidy will be taking over the lead in the musical Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway sometime in September, co-starring with Cheryl Ladd. He will be starring till January. After that it seems like he will be starring in the musical AIDA.

David Cassidy is participating in an online Internet book launch  to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. All proceeds from the book (Prophecy) go to the charity, and celebrities like David Cassidy, Dolly Parton, and the cast of Star Trek:Voyager were recruited to record lines from the book. They are posted  at dailymysteryguest.com through Aug. 31. As an entertainer, David Cassidy believes that the most important thing he can do is to bring a human element to his work. As a humanitarian, David and his wife Sue Shifrin-Cassidy feel fortunate to be able to benefit children around the world through their charitable efforts and especially through their umbrella charity KidsCharities.org.  Here's the link to David's line: "Your time will come. Just be certain that you're ready when it does":  www.elizabethhaydon.com/_readings/cas.html

ON THE SHAUNSIDE:

NEW YORK (Variety) - TV executives are working feverishly to resurrect USA's ``La Femme Nikita'' from what looks like a premature burial.
``Nikita,'' the cable TV series adaptation of the 1990 hit French movie, received its official cancellation notice in May after a solid 88-episode run on the USA network. The series was losing money for its distributor, Warner Bros., which couldn't justify keeping it in production for another year.
But over the last few weeks, original episodes of ``Nikita'' airing Sundays at 10 have continued to harvest a sizable crop of cable subscribers, averaging close to a 2 rating in USA homes despite limited promotion.
By contrast, three of the network's four fresh primetime series -- ``The War Next Door'' (Sundays at 9), ``Manhattan, AZ'' (Sundays at 9:30) and "Cover Me'' (Wednesdays from 9-10) -- have disappointed, hovering between a 1 and a 1.5 rating in cable homes. The fourth newcomer, ``The Huntress'' (Wednesdays from 10-11), is a bright spot, averaging in the high 1's.

August 2, 2000:  Shaun appeared on the Drive Home with Ryan Seacrest & Lisa radio show on Star 98.7. He was on for at least an hour, in the midst of recorded music & commercials. Shaun was there to promote his "Cover Me" series on USA Network, which is on at 9 pm on Wednesdays. He also had to answer a lot of questions about his past as a teen idol. If you want to read the whole transcript from the radio show, you can go to http://members.tripod.com/~cassidyluvr/SCradio.html. (Thanks to Cheryl Corwin from Friends of the Cassidys for the transcript and the photo).

August 22, 2000: Shaun appeared on KTLA - Los Angeles Morning News (see photo) to promote "Cover Me".

PATRICK CASSIDY IS HER LEADING MAN

Cheryl Ladd gets her gun, goes to Broadway
By Stephen Schaefer, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — Cheryl Ladd, who went from Huron, S.D., to Hollywood and Charlie's Angels, is having no trouble getting back to her Midwestern roots as gun-toting, sharp-shooting Annie Oakley in Broadway's long-running revival of Annie Get Your Gun.
"I'm having fun, I have the energy. Let's hope I have the stamina," she says of the three weeks of rehearsals necessary to step into Tony winner Bernadette Peters' buckskins for six months, beginning Sept. 6.
Who knew that Ladd, 49, long a staple of TV movies, could sing or dance? "It's not the first thing that comes to mind. Everybody knows me mostly from the acting," she says before reciting credits that include recordings and TV variety specials. The last time she was on stage was in the mid-'80s, as Reno Sweeney in Cole Porter's Anything Goes in Santa Barbara, where she lives with her second husband, Brian Russell.
"I'm a bit rusty," she says, "but it's like riding a bike."
Her Broadway bow coincides nicely with fall's wave of Charlie's Angels fever. Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz's big-screen Charlie's Angels opens Nov. 3, although without cameos by any of the original Angels. "It was all or nothing, and some of us wanted to, and some didn't."
And Ladd's Kris Munroe, who replaced Farrah Fawcett in the series' second year, returns along with crime-fighting castmates Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith when TV Land, the cable channel, revives the original series Oct. 6.
She's got a new leading man as well in Patrick Cassidy. "I heard that and said, 'I can't work with him, he's prettier than me!'"
Motherhood was the reason Ladd has waited this long to tackle Broadway. "Before, my girls were in high school, and it wasn't a good time." Now an empty-nester with daughter Jordan Ladd pursuing an acting career (Never Been Kissed), she says, "It all timed out perfectly, and we always wanted a New York experience."
As for Jordan, whose grandfather was Alan Ladd of Shane fame, going into the family business, Ladd says, "She knows a lot more about it going in than when I was her age. I knew nothing. I didn't know enough to be petrified." (USA TODAY, August 29, 2000)
