Shaun's Poem

He was once a teen idol
Who always had a song in his heart,
Every song that he sang turned into a hit
And having his records on the music chart.

"The Hardy Boys" made him a instant star
That skyrocketed him to instant fame,
When he sang on stage, he made the audience
   go wild
Soon everyone knew his name.

He is truly a gift that no one will forget
A truly, talented singer that he was meant
   to be,
Music has been and always will be in his
   blood
This is his poem and his name is Shaun Cassidy.

THAT WAS BACK
THEN...

By Frances Schoenberger

In one year: a top LP, two hit
singles -- and a third,  "Sunrise," is on the way. Eric Carmen has
become a superstar with amazing speed.

Eric Carmen started with two and a half years of musical instruction as a child. He was the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra mascot. His Aunt Muriel, a violinist, always took him to rehearsals. One time,
he hid  in a cello case and the
musicians had to find him. When he turned fifteen, he studied
classic piano, violin and  viola.
He hoped to become a concert-
pianist one day. Then he saw
the Beatles in the film "A Hard
Days Night," and it "clicked!"
He immediately wanted to become a  rock'n roller.

He abandoned his piano and
learned to play the guitar.  In
1970, he established his own
group, the Raspberries. They
wanted to revive the golden
age of rock'n roll, but the record
company didn't understand why
they all  wore the same white-
colored suits. Eric: "We looked
like the Osmonds, and nobody
took us seriously."

Eric was unhappy and
unsatisfied. With their third and
fourth album, they changed
musical directions. Now  they
were adored by the critics, but
the records stopped selling. "It
made me so crazy, I almost tore
all the hair out of my head.
Everyone in the band blamed
one another. We fought
constantly. And in 1975, we
broke up."

Eric went back to Cleveland. He
was delighted with his regained
freedom. Nobody made rules
for him and he could write songs to his own liking. Record
company executive Clive Davis
listened to him spontaneously
play  his new songs while
sitting on his couch in his
Cleveland living room.

Shortly after that, he was in the
recording studio working on his
first solo album. Producer Jimmy
Ienner, who also worked on the
new Bay City Rollers LP,  remembers: "No one knew how much Eric had in him. I did. I had him sing "All By Myself " over and over again  until it finally sounded like Eric Carmen and no longer like the Beatles or the Beach Boys. For the first time, Eric had his own sound."

His first LP, ERIC CARMEN arrived in America and produced two Top-Ten singles, "All By Myself " and "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again." The third single, "Sunrise," also seems destined to become a winner.

A few months ago, Shaun and David Cassidy were in the audience when Eric Carmen appeared at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. Eric sat at the piano for the first half of the show, and played guitar for the second half. David Cassidy jumped up on the stage to join himon "Be My Baby." David, a big Beach Boys fan, attended one of the "surf boys" concerts in Florida which featured a performance by Eric Carmen. From then on,  David was also a fan of Eric. Since then, they've become buddies.

Shaun sat quietly in the audience up until Eric played  the song, "That's Rock'n Roll." "Then, I could hardly hold  it in. It's such a great song," Shaun said, "The next day, I went out and bought the album. I spoke with Eric on the phone. He gave me permission to record the song as a single. I hope it becomes a hit for me."

Eric, himself, lives for ballads, and romantic love songs.  The shy Eric lives completely withdrawn in his  hometown of Cleveland. Intently, he knits his new hits.  In Autumn, he plans to head back into the studio to record his second LP.

CASSIDY LIVE 2000!

It was a great surprise to a lot of David Cassidy fans when they first heard that he would be doing two concerts at the Harrah's in Atlantic City on September 8 and 9. The shows were sold out before they were officially announced. People from all over America and the world had found their way to Atlantic City for this rare event. A group of more than 30 people from the David Cassidy Chat List on Topica had found their way there, including several people from England, Holland, and myself, who's from Norway.

I will say thank you to all the people on the Chat List who did a great job and donated a considerable sum of money to Kidscharities.com, who was represented at the Harrah's with the founder and David Cassidy's wife, Sue.

The concert started at 8 p.m. on Friday. David came in as Johnny Flamingo (his character at the Rio in Las Vegas), and did "Come Fly with Me", "Get me to the church on time", "Up a lazy river", "Luck be a lady" and "Mack the Knife." Lon Bronson's Orchestra and local musicians from the Atlantic City were backing him up. Johnny never mentioned David by name, but referred to him as the guy who was gonna follow him. He also couldn't understand what was the big deal about him. He always thought he was a faggot, but added that he didn't have a problem with that, and that he actually liked the guy.

After an instrumental played by  Lon Bronson's Orchestra, David came on as himself. He opened with "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat" and continued with "I'll Meet You Halfway," "No Bridge I Wouldn't Cross" and  "Summer Days." In between songs David communicated with his audience, telling them stories and joking with them. There was an excellent two way communication. We all had a lot of fun. David was calling his warming up act, Johnny Flamingo, Frankie (Frankie Reno was the awfully bad singer from his Copa show in Las Vegas). In "Echo Valley 2-6809" the operators words were changed to "I'm sorry. You've reached a disconnected decade." He dedicated his 1990 hit "Lyin' To Myself" to his wife and mother of his son, Sue Shifrin Cassidy, who also co-wrote the song with him. When David was slightly less old (his own words), he liked singing the above the high C. However, if he did, we wouldn't be seeing any more of him that evening, so he said he would have to do a different approach to "Lyin' To Myself", which basically meant that his two female background vocalists were doing the high parts. In "Lyin' To Myself" David also happened to break a guitar pick, according to him for the first time on stage. He threw it out into the audience. "Cherish," "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" and "I Think I Love You" followed. By this time everybody were standing up and dancing. The last two songs were "C'Mon Get Happy" and of course "Rock Me Baby."

The concert did span the whole thirty years of his career. David said that he doesn't do this kind of shows as often as he'd like to, due to his commitment to the Rio in Las Vegas, but he really appreciates it when he does. There were no doubts that he enjoyed himself on stage, like all his fans who were there. The concert lasted about one hour and twenty minutes.

From what I heard for the Saturday show, David as Johnny Flamingo had an accident falling over a speaker on the stage. He held his wrist for a second or two. Luckily there has been no indication that it's seriously hurt. He got right up and continued the song and everyone clapped. The look on his face showed surprise and disgust. Coming out as himself he made fun of Johnny Flamingo being a clutz. He did different jokes the second night.

Trouble at the Copa

According to E-Vegas Exchange, things are not faring to well for the David Cassidy vehicle at the Rio. The show David Cassidy at the Copa started with bad reviews almost a year ago, has improved and has had steady ticket sales mostly due to the David Cassidy fans. However it is his female lead Sheena Easton that is stealing the show, and something that has visibly ticked off the star of the show. The two leads have come to screaming attacks at one another and try to avoid each other like the plague. Both Norm and Kate Maddox have reported on the issue in their columns in the Las Vegas Sun and Las Vegas Review Journal.
The inability of the two stars to get along may see an early departure of Sheena Easton, and Cassidy will likely look for a new actress/singer that will have less of likelihood to overshadow him. Maybe a great time for Susan Dey to come out of the woodwork and re-instate her place in the acting world. But then, she never really sang on the "Partridge Family". David’s half brother Patrick who has been David’s understudy for both "EFX" and "At the Copa" performing the parts when David is busy with his musical career. Anyway Patrick Cassidy will not be able to fill his brothers shoes, since he has landed a lead in a show on Broadway. So be on the watch for changes in the
Rio show. Thanks to Cheryl Corwin of Friends of the Cassidys for this information.

FIRST TIME ON CD!
By the end of 1971, the made-for-television pop group The Partridge Family was experiencing extraordinary popularity. At the center of the phenomenon was David Cassidy, the lead singer of the group and breakout star of the show. Cherish, released in February of 1972, was Cassidy's solo debut. The album presented a more mature and emotional side of David Cassidy than The Partridge Family had revealed, while still attracting the teen audience that had so enthusiastically embraced the Partridges' platters. Making its long-awaited CD debut, Cherish includes "Could It Be Forever" and the hit title track. New liner notes are written by Cassidy/Partridge Family authority Lisa Sutton. The CD also includes rare Henry Diltz photos from the original cover shoot. The release date of the CD, which is digitally remastered, is October 24. You can order it already now by clicking on the CDNow banner on the black section to the left on this page.

September 5 - 11, 2000: Dark week. David Cassidy will not be performing at the Copa this week.

September 6, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes:
Columnist Elizabeth Foyt: Stars fill the audience at 'Bottoms Up' show

Laughter and the joy of pleasures recalled were the sensations enjoyed as the "Best of Bottoms Up" opened at the Flamingo Las Vegas. Ideally staged for the spacious showroom quarters recently vacated by the Rockettes, Breck Wall and Patrick Maes' production is a true burlesque show with pretty girls, song and dance and, as always, the trademark bawdy humor.

An afternoon show, the production opens with Wall at his comedic best. Cheering him on was a celebrity-packed audience with Siegfried and Roy, accompanied by Frank Lieberman, Sheena Easton, Marty Allen, Bobby Berosini, Bill Acosta, David Cassidy, Kenny Kerr, Tommy Smothers, Fielding West and Steve Rossi. Glimpsed as well was Betty Bunch, a busy Screen Actors Guild actress and original "Bottoms Up" cast member, as well as David London, John Neeland, Phil and Treasure Ford, Jack Novack, R.L. and Beverly Dalgren, Sherry Weisbart and former Nevada Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman presided over ceremonies, recognizing Wall and Maes and their show as they came home to Las Vegas. "Bottoms Up" originated at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, later coming to the Castaways in Las Vegas. It is best known for its lengthy run in the famous Nero's Nook lounge at Caesars Palace. The production partners also have "Passion" in a several-year run at the Reno Hilton. A garden party for invited guests followed at Wall's spacious home where Jimmy Emerson, Michael Darren, Faye McKaye, Roger Ray and Bill Fanning were seen in attendance. Present as well was noted producer/choreographer Frederick Apcar, a pioneer in Las Vegas entertainment who created many lavish extravaganzas. Bruce Banke, who served at publicist for the show for more than 20 years, attended with Chrisse White Waddell. Also enjoying the production and festivities were many show people and dancers from the Riviera's "La Cage" and "Crazy Girls" as well other local shows "Boylesque," "American Superstars" and "Lasting Impressions."

September 8 - 9, 2000: David Cassidy was playing live at the Harrah's, Atlantic City, NJ.

September 17, 2000: The Chicago Sun Times writes:
Cassidy's `Copa' (by Miriam Di Nunzio - Staff reporter)

LAS VEGAS--David Cassidy once boasted the largest fan club in the world. No small feat, considering his contemporaries included Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
Cassidy, unlike those other musical legends, had one huge advantage: He came into our living rooms every week on the hit TV series "The Partridge Family," where he starred as Keith Partridge, teen idol.
But his real love was music, and not just any music. Though he sold more than 25 million records and earned several Grammy Award nominations for his pop hits, Cassidy says he lives to sing the standards. And his new Las Vegas musical revue, "At the Copa," which opened in February, affords him the chance to do just that six nights a week at the Rio All-Suite Casino Resort.
The production, which co-stars former pop queen Sheena Easton, tells the tale of a waiter in a 1940s nightclub who gets his big chance at stardom while falling in love with the club's torchy songstress. All of it is set to wonderful standards such as "That Old Black Magic," "Try a Little Tenderness" and Cassidy's personal favorite, "Mack the Knife."
"I was a huge Bobby Darin fan," Cassidy says enthusiastically. "I used to do `Lazy River' in my concerts, because it was one of my favorite Darin arrangements. He was an unsung genius."
Not exactly the musicspeak one might expect to hear from the pop singer who charted megahits such as "I Think I Love You," "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" and "Cherish." Or from the actor who found fame in musical theater while starring in productions of "Blood Brothers" (which co-starred real-life brother, Shaun) and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
"With `Copa,' I wanted to do a hybrid between a Broadway musical and a concert performance of David Cassidy, " the 51-year-old entertainer explains. "But I wanted it to be a throwback to the nightclub era, and the one club that everyone always thinks of is the Copa. It's one of those places that's almost a myth now, a magical place and time that doesn't exist anymore. I wanted to pay homage to that great music, all the great stuff I grew up with."
Cassidy says the music he loved growing up was never reflected in his work on "The Partridge Family."
"I wanted to be a little more me, a little more soulful, a little more edgy and ambitious," he begins. "The stuff that really moved me were things that were organic and pretty raw. I saw [Jimi] Hendrix five times. I saw Marvin Gaye three times. I was a huge fan of R&B, B. B. King, [Eric] Clapton, Cream. All that stuff that my friends and I used to go and see in clubs on the Strip.
"You could turn on the radio back then and hear--on one station--Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, the Beatles, Elvis, the Yardbirds, the Temptations. And that's the music that drove me.
"But on the TV show, they wanted me to sound more, shall I say, straight-arrow? They would slow the track down before I would get in, so that I would sing it slightly down, and then they'd speed it up to its regular speed, which made me sound a little higher vocally, and a little younger. I really had a bigger voice than they ever really expected. It worked for the songs we were doing, but then the songs we did never really had much vocal range in terms of style."
Cassidy says "At the Copa" expresses the musical style that reflects his lifestyle these days, a life alonsgide his wife Sue Shifrin-Cassidy and their two sons. In addition to "At the Copa," Cassidy also co-wrote and produced "The Rat Pack Is Back," a tribute to Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., performed nightly across town at the Sahara.
"I live in that skinny tie and lapel kind of world," Cassidy says with a chuckle, "and that whole scene is suddenly cool again. I wanted to pay homage to people who were fabulous entertainers amid all this fabulous music and hysterical comedy."
Cassidy is no stranger to the Strip, having performed here for 2 1/2 years in "EFX" at the MGM Grand, a show that earned him "The All Around Performer" and "Entertainer of the Year" honors from local newspapers. He has a keen sense of what the Las Vegas entertainment landscape embraces.
"When they come to town, people want to see things they can't see anyplace else," Cassidy says. "It becomes part of the whole experience for them, in addition to any gambling they may do. It's all here in the same four-mile radius--the most high-end shopping in the world, the most fabulous restaurants and the most exciting entertainment."

Specifically:
"At the Copa," at the Rio All-Suite Casino Resort. Tickets: $58; 8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday. Call (888) 746-7784.

"The Rat Pack Is Back." David Cassidy and Don Reo wrote and produced this koo-koo kinda krazy tribute to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin and the era when Las Vegas was the place to be. Tickets: $45.20 to $52. 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tues. and Sat.; 8 p.m. Wed., Thurs., Fri. and Sun. Congo Room, Sahara Hotel and Casino, (702) 737-2515

September 19 - October 2, 2000: What's On in Las Vegas writes:
CASSIDY: THE COMEBACK KID (by Donna Yahner)

David Cassidy calls Las Vegas home. It might not be forever, but Cassidy learned early that forever is an illusory concept.
In his lovely Spanish-style home the entertainer and writer has his comfortable private retreat/study warmed by lots of leather and earthy arts and crafts décor. Here he conducts business and indulges his long-standing passion for thoroughbred racehorses, owning and breeding many. Most walls are adorned with vintage racing posters. One wall encompasses an enormous TV screen so that he can monitor horse races across the country and perhaps indulge in a Yankee game or two.
After spinning out entirely from his early TV hit show, “Partridge Family,” and No. 1 pop-star status, Cassidy spent a lot of time figuring out how to bring his show business soul back to life.
“Not letting my fans down and always trying to live up to their expectation of who I was left me hollow inside. No one can stay successful that way,” says a wiser, older Cassidy speaking of his youth. When the tide of idol hysteria subsided Cassidy ended up at ground zero—emotionally, financially and without an entertainment identity.
Spending time in Europe was healing. He recorded an English hit “Lying to Myself” and successfully toured, but he was homesick for the United States.
Once back and with nothing to do he began co-writing songs with Sue Shifrin, prominent songwriter to Olivia Newton-John and Smokey Robinson. That was a beginning. Now married 12 years, Cassidy and Shifrin have between them numerous gold and platinum records that hang in one area of the Cassidy study.
A stint on Broadway brought him back in front of an American audience. Then came another offer that landed him in the land of neon. Arriving to bail out a beleaguered “EFX” at the MGM Grand in 1996, Cassidy and the show went on to rave notices due in no small measure to his creative input as well as his talented singing and dancing. But 1,000 performances dancing on a steel stage took their toll. Cassidy developed Morgan’s neuroma in his foot and required surgery. (The leading “EFX” role is now played by Broadway star Tommy Tune.)
Afterwards, he and partner Don Reo went on to write, produce and direct “Rat Pack is Back,” which is currently playing at the Sahara Hotel & Casino. “I’ve always loved the Sinatra era. I’m in Las Vegas. I wanted to keep the memory of the Rat Pack alive and pay tribute to them,” says Cassidy. “I come from a story place and I believe people always respond to a good story.”
That sense of theater, embedded in Cassidy’s genes, is also evident in “David Cassidy at the Copa” playing at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino. He wrote, produced and stars in the show.
“I think there’s always been an ambition in me to write and produce. Now I’m having that opportunity,” declares Cassidy. “I’m grateful to Las Vegas. I have a home and I can spend time with my family. I can go to my son’s Little League games. My wife is devoted to kids’ charities."

September 19 - October 2, 2000: What's On in Las Vegas writes:
WE STILL LOVE YOU, DAVID CASSIDY (by Donna Yahner)

There’s no business like show business . . . .” This must be the subliminal mantra David Cassidy hears in his dreams. Former teen idol Cassidy once again shows his mettle by writing, producing and starring in “David Cassidy At the Copa,” appropriately playing in the Rio’s Copacabana Showroom. His co-star is the sultry Sheena Easton, whose gold single hit, “Morning Train,” hit No. 1 on the charts and stayed there for two weeks in 1981.
The plot is simple and timeless, and in this case carries us back to that much-romanticized era of svelte crooners, fast money and dames in their finest glory.
His name is Johnny Flamingo (Cassidy), a singing waiter hoping to make it big at the notorious Copacabana nightclub in New York. Johnny gets his break when the current headlining heartthrob gets done in at the hands of a babe with a grudge. Naturally, Johnny is a sensation and falls for Ruby Bombay (Easton), the resident golden-voiced femme fatale. The feeling is mutual (now, here’s where the plot thickens). Ruby has her job because she’s the boss’ girlfriend.
The corrupt Copa boss, Lefty, cares only for money and power. He gruffly warns Johnny to stay away. But lovers never heed warnings or threats, and their undoing is that of every tragic love story every written.
Lefty catches on to Johnny and Ruby’s budding romance and has Johnny seduced by one of his girls. The timing is perfect for Ruby to walk in on one more heartbreak. She shuts Johnny out and Lefty gives him the shaft.
Johnny drowns himself in booze to blot out the pain. When he pulls himself out of the gutter, his only ambition is to fix the injustice wrought him and find Ruby.
Enter Beaumont, the fat man comic relief, marvelously played by Stewart Daylida, who keeps us laughing at all the right moments throughout the show. He sets Ruby straight on the story. Soon Johnny catches a date with fate as he meets Ruby in the street, and the star-crossed lovers reunite in a blaze of passion.
It’s in bad taste to reveal the ending so you’ll have to see the show for yourself to find out what happens. There’s a twist to be sure.
Cassidy has worked hard to make his show into a hit. Easton is superb as the ill-fated Ruby Bombay. Every song she sings is a thriller, even those famous songs of her own like “Morning Train” and “For Your Eyes Only.” She carries the torch a blazing in “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man of Mine” and the sultry “Fever.”
Cassidy deserves lots of kudos for bringing in a supporting cast of outstanding singers and dancers, along with the top-notch Lon Bronson and his 18-piece orchestra. For those of us who’ve tired of canned music, we applaud David Cassidy’s insistence on the concept of quality. Ditto for bringing in Rick and Tammy Pessagno and their jazzy choreography.
That leaves Cassidy himself. As the earnest good guy Johnny Flamingo we catch the nostalgic beat as he sings those larger-than-life hits like “Mack the Knife,” “Lazy River,” “That Old Black Magic,” and in duet with Easton, “My Kind of Town.” Of course, for his long-ago fans there’s “I Think I Love You” and “I Woke Up in Love This Morning.” As he makes his way through the audience, his diehard fans swoon.
But we also get to see a few glimmers of someone else there, too. It’s Cassidy, the actor, who reveals someone more complex and full of irony than we’ve ever seen before. It’s this facet of Cassidy who really catches our eye. We look forward to seeing more.

SHOWTIMES: Wed.-Sun., 8 p.m., Tue., 7 & 9:30 p.m.
SHOWROOM: Rio’s Copacabana Showroom
SHOW PRICE: $58, 702-252-7776

September 23, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: Don't be surprised to see Sheena Easton walk away from "At the Copa" when her contract is up at the end of the year. David Cassidy's partner in the Rio production has apparently had it with the cool breezes blowing her way from her co-star and she wants out, according to sources close to the production.
One insider says the two are no longer on speaking terms and have just about given up on a friendly reconciliation. The reason Cassidy is reportedly so unhappy has more to do with Easton, uh, growing into her role and less to do with her performance.
(Kate Maddox)

September 24, 2000: The following can be read in the Las Vegas Review-Journal: Insiders say it's all over but the shouting between David Cassidy and Sheena Easton, who co-star in his "At the Copa" show at the Rio. Their "marriage" will be lucky to last the life of her one-year deal ...
(Norm Clarke)

September 25, 2000: The Las Vegas Review-Journal writes: The BBC also visits Vegas this week for a one-hour documentary devoted to Sheena Easton, who co-stars with David Cassidy in the Rio's "At the Copa."
The documentary will include footage of a recent Easton video shoot in London, plus "interviews with different people in her life" -- including Cassidy -- and scenes of her Las Vegas life, notes Harriet Wasserman, Easton's manager.
The Venetian, the Forum Shops at Caesars and the Aladdin are among the stops on the BBC's local itinerary, Wasserman adds.
The documentary is tentatively set to air in November, when Easton's new album will be released, she adds.
Cassidy, meanwhile, will be busy Thursday shooting a promotional video for a Teen People magazine parody of VH1's "Behind the Music" backstage at the Rio, according to JoAnn Geffen, Cassidy's publicist.

September 26, 2000: The Las Vegas Sun writes: Well, it looks like those rumors of a Sheena Easton -David Cassidy split over at the Rio could very well turn out to be true.
Easton's longtime manager out of L.A., Harriet Wasserman, uttered a curt "no comment" when asked whether Easton was considering moving on when her contract is up on Jan. 18. Sources in Las Vegas maintain she'll split.
In addition to escaping the frosty feelings off-stage in "At the Copa," Easton is also said to be looking for a more financially fair agreement. She currently makes just one fifth of the hefty weekly salary her co-star pockets. (Columnist Kate Maddox)

CASSIDYS IN BRIEF:

Shaun's American Gothic will be back on Sci-Fi Channel on Fridays as from September 29. Some real good news for the fans of Shaun and the American Gothic.

A message from the The Official Ryan Cassidy Fan Website: FACTS OF LIFE
I wanted to remind everyone about the Nick At Nite marathon starting Monday night (September 4) and running all week.  I am still looking for an actual schedule of episodes for the marathon.  One for the entire week isn't available yet. HOWEVER, there is a listing of episodes for the series at the Nick At Nite site, including all of Ryan's episodes (http://www.nick-at-nite.com/tvretro/shows_nan/factsoflife/epi7.tin).  The schedule I can see for night one of the marathon looks fairly thorough for season one - so, they might show at least one of Ryan's 5 episodes later in the week.  Ryan is in the following episodes: Two Guys From Appleton,
A Man in the Attic, Gone with the Wind Part I, With A Little Help From My Friends, It's Lonely At The Top (6th season).

Partridge Family mom and Drew Carey Show semi-regular Shirley Jones has signed on to play the widow of a mafia don on USA's Cover Me, according to shirleyjones.com.

The John Larroquette show starts airing on the USA network Monday Sept. 18, at 1 pm eastern. "Wrestling Matches" is the title of the episode with David Cassidy. This is episode 39. They are starting with the pilot so it should be on in about 2 months.

The David Cassidy Story

Long before 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys ruled the pop charts, David Cassidy's face was plastered on the walls and lunchboxes of America's teens. It was the early '70s, and the message of the Partridge Family's resident hunk was simple: "C'mon, get happy!" The David Cassidy Story traces the teen idol's life from childhood to superstardom. Boyish good looks and tight bell-bottoms helped catapult hits like "I Think I Love You" to the top of the charts. But despite this success, Cassidy's personal life wasn't all that groovy. Troubled by the superficiality of his image, the public's unwillingness to accept him as a mature artist, and a turbulent relationship with his father, the TV star was driven to drugs, depression, and eventually a low-profile singing career in the U.K. This bio pic covers it all. Patrick Cassidy in "Annie Get Your Gun"

By Randy Gener

NEW YORK – When the history of American musicalrevivals gets written, Irving Berlin’s anthemic ode to showbiz, Annie Get Your Gun, will likely be remembered as the show that fulfilled many a TV star's Broadway dreams.
Susan Lucci used the show to step into the Broadway limelight; now Cheryl Ladd is following suit, surprising everyone who has ever placed her in that cubbyhole as “Kris Monroe, that former ‘Charlie’s Angel’ star.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, the blonde from South Dakota is making her Broadway debut as Annie Oakley, opposite Patrick Cassidy in the role of Frank Butler.
Together, Ladd and Cassidy are fulfilling that self-fulfilling mantra, “Let’s Go On With the Show.”
And just as Lucci had to prove to the mainstream public that she knew her musical-theatre stuff last Christmas, Cheryl Ladd worked to give the media folk and press people a taste of what comes naturally. On a muggy Thursday morning, Aug. 31, she and Cassidy showed up at the New Dance Group Studio on West 47th Street and Broadway to perform two numbers from Annie Get Your Gun: “Doin’ What Comes Naturally” and “Anything You Can Do.”
“Broadway was a lifelong dream,” Ladd told Theatre.com. “It’s something I’ve been preparing for since I was 6 or 7 years old. I’ve been dancing since 7. I sang with a band. I’ve been preparing for Broadway my whole life -- truly.
This time, Ladd and Cassidy are staying for a while. Ladd is replacing 1999 Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, whose final performance is Sept. 3. Tony nominee Tom Wopat is also giving his final performance on that date.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME? From wrestling alligators on TV to wrestling Frank Butler in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Ladd is making a star turn on the Great White Way.
Ladd fans, of course, remember that her first professional gig was as a back-up singer on the cartoon series "Josie and the Pussycats." During high school, she sang in a band called "The Music Shop Band."
And though she’s only gotten two weeks of rehearsals to step into Annie Get Your Gun, Ladd and Cassidy looked ready and excited and rarin’ to go.
“I really am ready,” Ladd told Theatre.com. “I’m excited about it and anxious to play this character and have the opportunity to sing these beautiful Irving Berlin songs.”

Cassidy chimed in: “This is the first time we’ve met. We’re getting along superbly. Cheryl is so talented. She’s so right-there and in-the-moment. She’s so supportive. I just know we’re going to have so much fun in the next few months.”

Apparently, Ladd had been angling for a Broadway turn for quite some time. “In the mid- to late 1980s, when my girls were in high school, I was approached to go to Broadway,” she said. “Believe it or not, some people in the industry know that I sing and dance.”

Ladd didn’t reveal what shows she was considered for, however. “I don’t ever talk about movies I didn’t get or movies I passed on,” she explained. “I don’t think it’s fair to the other actors who took those roles.”
Unfortunately, family had to come first, and the rigorous demands of the theater had to be placed at bay. “It was not a good time, and I had to be with my girls,” she said. “So I just hoped that one day another opportunity would come up.”

When Bernadette Peters was contemplating taking some time off in early winter, Annie Get Your Gun producers approached Ladd to see if she would like to take on the role of Oakley.

“Actually there was some interest around Christmas time, when Bernadette would take her Christmas break -- that didn’t work for me either,” Ladd said. “And the producers were already interested in Susan Lucci. I knew that at one point Bernadette would probably leave the show, and I wanted them to know that I had some interest, and I wanted to come see it. Then I sort of forget about it. Then out of the blue, they called and said yes we’d like Cheryl to come and see the play and see if she wanted to do it. It was the easiest audition I’d ever done. It wasn’t really an audition.”

Despite the proto-feminist aspects of Annie Oakley, Ladd said that she prefers to think of her using a less loaded term: natural. “She’s a natural person,” Ladd said. “She fed her family by hunting. That’s how she put food in the table because she lost her father. She had to become the best shot because she had no choice. So she was a natural person. There was no ‘this is what men do and this is what women do’. She knew what needed to be done. She was a completely honest, truthful and real human being who had a core of decency and truth -- and that’s in the play. That’s the way she was written. So much of that comes through in the musical.”

Having chopped her long, blonde hair to a pageboy cut, Ladd said that she is drawing on her girlhood from Huron, South Dakota to make Annie Oakley work for her as a character.
“Having grown up in a small town in South Dakota, I had a real connection with who Annie is, and her simpler form,” Ladd said. The minute I put on the costume, walking in the posture and doing the physical work, I begin to understand the elements of who the character is. If you’re working correctly, both [the psychological aspects and the costume] come together at the same moment, and there’s Annie for you. Each day goes by, I begin to feel comfortable being Annie. Everything helps: just the act of carrying the rifle, and feeling how the posture is, the fact that she’s completely unsophisticated. There’s no feminine walk. Nor is she masculine. She’s just natural. She feels comfortable in her boots.”
Ladd is performing in Annie Get Your Gun through January 28, 2001. Annie Get You Run, starring Cheryl Ladd and Patrick Cassidy, performs at the Marquis Theatre, 1535 Broadway, between West 45th and West 46th Street. Call Ticket Master at (212) 307-4100.
